  • This documentary originated out of a feeling of responsibility. It felt like I needed to bring awareness to issues I came across during my Ph.D. journey. I hope to sort of pay it forward by creating a symposium where viewers can take responsible action and participate in discussions on important issues in the comments with #FromCaptivitytotheJungle or #FCTJ.
The title, “From Captivity to the Jungle” comes from a literal meaning of working with captive gibbons for my master’s research to wild gibbons for my PhD. However, I like to think of the title as a metaphor for going from our comfortable day-to-day familiar bubbles and into a more vulnerable, yet potentially rewarding unknown jungle.
I like to think about how our daily actions contribute to larger scale impacts on planet Earth. We have lost the right to be selfish. We must think about our responsibility to future generations and understand how the decisions we make today will impact the wellbeing of each generation to come. Please look at some of what I experienced and then share your passion projects.
Some of the topics I focused on in this documentary:
Deforestation near the Crab Orchard Wildlife Refuge
The 793-day-long (2015-2017) budget crisis in Illinois
    SIU Museum closure
Budget cuts to the US Student Fulbright Program
Shopping local at the Carbondale Farmer’s Market
Supporting a local business - Scratch Brewery
Shopping smart and avoiding bad palm oil at Walmart
Sharing some of my PhD research experience in Indonesia
Sharing the stories of people I worked with in North Sumatra
Illegal hunting and farming within a Protected National Park
Palm Oil - showcasing the work of Rudi Putra and FKL

Thank you very much for the comment. It's simple but true...sometimes you have to strap on your boots and do it yourself. Do you have anything you'd like to share about projects or work you are involved with in the past, present, or future? If so, please reply here and try to use #FromCaptivitytotheJungle or #FCTJ for short.

Hello Zach, thank for for watching and commenting. Yes, the poverty is crippling. I wish there was more I could do to help. At the very least I hope that sharing it in a documentary will shine light on the issue. Have you ever worked on anything to help tackle poverty or have any ideas? Would love to hear more from your perspective.
