    Yo Pauli you should do a breakdown of body types and how that plays into a fighters style example Tyson was stocky and fought on the inside, and maybe how they fight against type like Chris Byrd stoky yet fought on the outside

      @@te340 Yeah because the Roberto Duran was a bad comparison because at lightweight he had a long range attack.. Once he started moving up then he started to fight more on the inside.. Because he started to give up height and reach to most opponents.

    Fantastic video Paulie. While I agree that casual fans tend to understand swarmers more, I actually think hardcore fans tend to understand boxers more than intelligent pressure fighters. Most hardcore fans don't have a deep technical understanding, so whilst they appreciate that a pure boxer is a beautiful thing, they don't always understand what a Duran, Chavez, Toney, etc is doing on the inside. Whereas a pull counter is more "obvious" than shoulder positioning in a clinch, for example. At least that's the case in my observational experience.

    Another style is the spoiler. Their specialty is frustrating their opponent, i.e. setting traps, presenting a false target, fighting in a broken rhythm, holding and hitting, timing headbutts to look accidental, transitioning from the outside to a sudden clinch very well, etc.

    Love the video Paulie. Just have a couple things I want to interject on. 1st off, I think that people need to take into mind the 2 stages of Mayweathers career when defining his style. There is the “pretty boy” stage from 130-140 lbs. People forget that this was his more natural weight range. In these divisions Mayweather had a very high KO % and definitely wanted to end fights. He was much more aggressive though he did use smart boxing still but I would very much classify him as a boxer puncher at this stage. Just watch what he did to the much taller Diego Corrales at this size. Then there was the “Money” stage where he was fighting men naturally 2 divisions bigger than him, 147-154 lbs. Due to fighting much bigger guys, and hand problems; Mayweather relied much more on the slick fighting you talked about and that most people think about him. However, the notion of him being a runner is plain casual fan BS. Just because he made people Miss didn’t mean he was running. In fact he did very little of that as he was not one to waste movement. He moved at the right times. Also I would like to point out just how rough and tough he actually was. Just watch his use of forearms and physical strength and you can count on 1 finger the amount of times he was ever wobbled in a fight (Mosley) which he went on to dominate after.
    I also liked your opinion of Cotto. Cotto was best when cutting off the ring and pressuring guys but was also a very good boxer when matched against stronger fighters. Just look at his fights against Margarito, Canelo, Mayorga to name a few. In fact there was a period in time where he actually got a little too cute and tried to box too much and just wasn’t the same fighter until Freddie Roach got him back to being a tactical pressure fighter.
    Great video as always!

    Agree with the definitions of outside fighter vs runner. I've always described it as: An outside fighter is looking to stay outside your range but within his, while runner is staying outside anybodys range -- essentially spoiling and stalling. Of course, most outside fighters indulge in a little tactical "running" from time to time, it being the dark art associated with their style - just as a pressure fighter might scatter in a few borderline shots or bully a little with the head just to disrupt your composure or a mauler/jab and grabber may hold and hit when they can get away with it and so on. I think much of the reason yell about "runners" as much as they do is that this cynical tactic is far less punished by referees than the others. We almost never see outside fighters get warnings for running, unless they take it to near comedy levels - and it should probably receive a similar amount of attention from referees as other "fouls" and rule bending strats.

    Btw Boxer-Puncher ALL day!

  • @ritzkola2302
    @ritzkola2302 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Me and Paulie got the same styles in our mind. “Runner” is the fourth style he mentioned but that’s tongue n cheek. There’s 3 styles, Boxer, Boxer-Puncher (hybrid style that some fighters lean more to one than the other), and Brawler (aka fighter) which Paulie refers to here as Banger/Swarmer.
    Manny Pacquiao was a Brawler. An aggressive pressure fighting Brawler.
    Prime Mike (80s Mike) was an aggressive counterpunching pressure fighter. 90s Mike was an aggressive pressure fighting Brawler.
    Pretty Boy Floyd was a complete fighter. Any range, any style, any technique, and any punch. He did it all.
    Money May was a counterpunching Boxer.
    Deontay Wilder is a Brawler. But the problem is his team never figured it out and they kept trying to force him into a Boxer role. They should train him to be a high level Brawler.

    • @TheMoistBanana
      @TheMoistBanana 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s interesting I wonder how wilder would have done as a brawler…I think he would be too sloppy and get jabbed and countered easily…plus with his frame/size I think it’s almost too hard to be a brawler. I think the best wilder we ever saw was in his last fight in which he got KOed…

    • @ritzkola2302
      @ritzkola2302 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TheMoistBanana The best Wilder we’ve seen is his fights before the first Ortiz. Where he actually did some high level things in the ring, consistently. He wasn’t so focused on knocking out the opponent in one punch. He was trying to win rounds, and he won them. For reference, going back n watching you’ll see him throwing a combination then placing his lead hand on the opponents shoulder to control them before turning them or stepping laterally. He did that consistently. It wasn’t a fluke. After Ortiz 1 there was a clear shift in his tactics where he was just focused on getting the ko in a single punch.
      As for your Brawler question. Brawlers are the least skilled of the three styles. Like Paulie said there’s a method to their madness of course (Because strategy and skill is always involved) however they are stylistically the least skilled as they aren’t in there to BOX. The sports scoring criteria and rules are skewed towards Boxers, naturally. Brawlers get by on the other things and loopholes like stopping an opponent or winning a round because of a knockdown, etc. That’s true modus operandi. We see Wilder is clearly a Brawler. In the heat of the moment it’s always his reaction to brawl. Except because he hasn’t been trained for it, he miscalculates key factors like how tall he is, how long his arms are, foot position, distance from opponent… So what he ends up doing (which we see) is throwing off balanced, awkward arm punches, that don’t hurt the opponent, are easily avoidable, and leave him vulnerable to being countered.
      Again this is because his team consistently try to force him into a Boxer role. He started the sport at nearly 20yrs old. That won’t work. Brawling is much more natural to him. Just like it is to most of us.
      The focus for Wilder should be on throwing combinations, varying types of punches instead of just the jab (a Boxers bread n butter), Fighting in the pocket, and using lateral movement to get out of the way. He consistently goes straight back which is a problem for several reasons. Under this style, he’d still be a devastating knockout artist but now he’d have more opportunity to confuse, beat on opponents defense, and mentally pressure opposition. The goal should be for him to outwork opponents to win rounds rather than to outbox them. He doesn’t have the finesse.
