I'm jealous and very keen to train and give it a go. Not sure about the backpack though, would need to practise as I haven't done any backpacking before. Awesome video, very visual and inspiring. Definitely on my bucket list.
Thank you very much, Sharon! Go for it, this hike is an incredible experience. I definitely recommend to practice some backpacking beforehand to get more confidence in what you're doing and especially dial in all your equipment. This will help to enjoy this adventure to the fullest.
Thank you so much, Sarah! It had been a pleasure not only hiking TA but also documenting it and putting it together in the end, what’s also always part of the journey for me.
Great video Ralf! It's a big commitment and it takes a lot of effort to make one of these vids. Hats off to you! It was really great meeting you and spending some time together on trail. All the best!
Thank you so much for these kind words, Valentijn! I hope you're well. It was a pleasure for me too hiking with your little group together, such an unforgettable adventure. Carpe diem!!!
Thanks for taking the time to watch my video, Janine! It's great to hear that you also got the chance to experience this adventure and the South Island is really the way to go if you only got time for one island.
thank you very much for taking the time to watch my video, Sue! I packed a lot of details into these not even 30 minutes, so it will be worth watching again.
Thank you for all the walks back to the camera! beautifully shot and this time you went walking instead of surfing, living the dream for sure. I will be biking this soon, dont have the time or feet for the walk but so glad you documented this.
thank you so much! The trail is for most of the time quite easy to follow due to waymarks and trail apps. But there are some sections where many got lost due to the absence or bad way marking too :-)
Thank you so much Steven! I used a Fuji XT5 with the Kit Lens Fujinon 18-55mm. When the weather turned bad as for the river crossings I used a Gopro Hero 11. These 2 cameras had been my "luxury items" and added some weight but I enjoyed documenting this hike a lot, so for me it was worth it :-)
This video is incredible and inspiring! Thank you! I plan to walk some TA from mid-December to the end of January. I will have about 6 weeks. If I were to start at the top of South Island - how far (very average speed!) do you think I could make it? Are there any sections you suggest to skip and do different ones? I will fly to Wellington and fly out of Queenstown. I am flexible with the destinations - this is meant to be "the taster" ;-). I would greatly appreciate your advice.
Thank you very much! I'm sorry but i can't tell you how far you will make it as there are just too many factors, as for example the weather (maybe you have to skip sections because of the weather) and your experience in regard to long distance hikes. Every section has its own charm, beauty and challenges. I would recommend that you start your hike and see how it's going. Try to make it to Lake Tekapo and decide there, depending on remaining time, if you need to skip a section till Queenstown.
@@gonesurfing8603 Thank you for such a quick response, I understand your position here. So let's go for a different angle - what were your favourite sections on the South Island? The "not to miss" ones? ;-)
@@kasia2216 Well, I wouldn't skip any part from the start till Lake Tekapo. So you have some easy days on the Queen Charlotte Track till the start of the Richmond Ranges. Richmond Ranges and Nelson Lakes are amazing, as is the part from Boyle to Arthur's pass. The sections before Rakaia and Rangitata River, in between and afterwards till Lake Tekapoo are very nice too. The Motatapu Track between Lake Wanaka and Queenstown shouldn't be missed either :-)
This should have way more views than it has. Amazing video. Keep it up :)
Thank you so much, Moritz! I'm glad you enjoyed this one!
Just puur and beautiful thx Grettings

Blue Lake hut and surrounds are awesome
so true, Nelson Lakes National Park was for sure one of my favorite sections on the TA.

thank you so much, Perry! I met some bikers on the way and all really enjoyed the journey. This will be an amazing adventure for sure.

wow Ralf, geniale Bilder, wie findest du da wieder zurück in die verrückte Welt? Freue mich schon sehr auf ein Wiedersehen 😊
vielen Dank!!! Das Zurück finden ist wohl eines der schwierigsten Dinge und wird noch etwas dauern 😂

thank you very much! I started my hike 12th of December at Cape Reinga and headed over to the South Island at the end of January.
Oh, By the way that bottle of Jacobs Creek/Pinot I think you will find that Australian - don't show the kiwis
thanks for this advice, Kerry! Next time I will hide it :-)
