  • Today we meet Paul who searched until he found just the perfect rig for him to travel in--a converted ambulance. He takes us on the tour of his rig and it is just astounding the great work he did to make full use of all the storage and organization available in these remarkable vehicles. There are many great things about converting an ambulance, but there are some negative ones as well--we talk about all of it!! We even talk about ghosts and goblins--you just never know!

      Having owned a private ambulance service and later selling ambulances, I can tell you this gentleman got one of the best built units on the market (MEDTEC). It's a shame they don't build them any longer...the structure and build quality of an ambulance body is heads above any box van, small bus or RV.

    • @sa78247
      @sa78247 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @j tier Ambulance bodies built by MedTec, Wheeled Coach, McCoy-Miller, and Horton are several good ones right off the top of my head, they're all good quality built units. Hard to say what you could expect to get km wise, depends on who owned it and how well preventative maintenance was performed and if it was "posted" or kept in a station or fire house. The units posted will have an awful lot of idle hours. I personally would steer clear of the 6.0 Ford diesel engine, lots & lots of problems there. Hope some of this helps, good luck!!

      I paid $1500 for mine. 1990 military ambulance with 45000 BUT blown tranny
      Get some serious knowledgeable people around you that’s my advice. Research persons to your build team wicked careful
      This was my biggest $$loss. Those that present well but are a $$ loss in end. Busy shops subcontracting the job to a slip shod worker or place. Make NO BONES about I want the owners personal hand and accountability on this Rig or it’s going 5 miles down road to competition
      ….BE more ruthless than you ever gave yourself permission to be.

    Getting an ambulance 🚑 that came from a smaller town, no drug abuse situations 💉, fire department rig 🔥, was always kept indoors 🏬, low miles logged through its lifetime from work... I had never thought about germs/disease. 🦠 🧫
    These were all great points 🏆😊 Premium plywood on cabinetry, faced with laminate on both sides, all the joinery is exceptional... Really easy to make it sterile.
    All the kickboards are stainless steel... All the flooring is a single piece of vinyl...
    All the seams have been sealed with silicone based embedding compound.
    Laminate surfaces...
    No cleaner you can use will damage anything. ⚗️ 🧪 🍋
    All mahogany ply, faced on both sides with laminate. They don't cut any corners.
    It's very clever.
    Just extremely well made 💪😁
    Everything just... *Works*
    "Traveling at 55 mph on cruise control (much more accurate than foot pedal manipulation), we get 16 and a half miles per gallon!" ⛽ 🚑 Pretty amazing. 😊

    This is perhaps the most perfect vehicle! The low miles, the price, it's fantastic but the thing a person needs to consider on an ambulance, more important than the miles on the odometer, some might have it and some might not, but the engine hours! Because many times ambulances are never shut down from the time a shift begins, until the time that a shift. But there again I small town Department, probably would not run one Non-Stop. But that's a very big consideration, miles might be very very low, while engine hours maybe tremendous, but it sounds like this particular unit is absolutely wonderful! Congratulations sir on such a tremendous find! May God bless you and your family and your travels and always keep you extremely safe! :-)

    They're built like a tank the storage is phenomenal the maintenance upkeep on them because they were used as an emergency vehicle is exceptional and most of them you can find for less than 100 thousand miles and that is chump change on a 7.3 diesel which is a million mile motor

    Durable and solid are the pluses. Negatives are heavy rig for it's available interior space, no headroom - like 5'5" only, and very little interior space considering it's overall size. Looked into these and like everything, it's a compromise.

    • @MidAtlanticTV
      @MidAtlanticTV 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yep, a unit with a 14' box and 72" inside height helps. But then you would have a larger overall rig. Tradeoffs.

    Love it! The clean cut interior, all systems in place, high functionality of the existing build. A few small mods and you have a home. The only downside is the low rooftop. Wish they made them a bit higher. Good for midgets, not for tall folks. Still, the best van there is out there. Well done, Paul, good find! Lovely home. I like the shower stall very much. Consider a proper door in there.

    Cool truck. An ambulance would be perfect for a custom RV. I really like this one. I just got a 89 uhaul truck with a 14’ box for $1200. It has the 7.3 with a C6 trans, legendary is a good description. This is a great truck. Most of the retired ambulances I see have huge mileage on them, It is probably why you don't see a lot of them converted. The thought of having to step outside to access something from your pantry, speaks the fair weather traveller, that he must be. I think they would probably make for a better tow vehicle simply because it has the ability to stow so much stuff. Most come with seat belts for 4 people, although limited viewing in the back. Finding one with low mileage will be tough. Interesting build.

    In a positive light, the ambulances are used to save lives or to transport women in labor to a hospital. A retired ambulance is a good choice for practical reasons. I would buy one if I could.

    Ambulances go through a disinfecting protocol before leaving the hospital, and before going on line. You stand a greater risk touching door handles everywhere, than you would from a ambulance. These units also get disinfected be for auction

    This is fantastic! I can’t believe it was just $5000- going to be looking at ambulances now. Great job.
