    Fun thought for the Melina stuff around 2:20:00 or so - if Melina is the full sister of Malenia and Miquella, that means each "child cluster" has three children in it. (Godfrey, Morgott, Mohg)/(Radahn, Ranni, Rykard)/(Malenia, Miquella, Melina).

    • @fillosof66689

      Always fun to point out that Godfrey is the only child of Marika who wasn't super fucked up, and is the only kid whose first letter is unique to his dad. Radahn, Ranni, and Rykard all got fucked up on their own so that doesn't count.

    • @GnosticDemiurge
      @GnosticDemiurge 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@SinHurr Actually, my suspicion is that Mohg and Morgott are Omens because of Godfrey. He's closely linked to the Crucible Knights, fights (stomps) like them, and he's a wild man who's primal and atavistic compared to the lordly ways of the Golden Order. I would suspect any child of Godfrey might have a tendency to end up an omen - and all the royal omens under the capital are probably born of the Golden Lineage.

      Melina and Millicent wear the same outfit, so I like to view Melina as a "bud" the same way Millicent is. She's like a cloned offshoot of Marika and possibly asexually reproduced, so she doesn't actually fit in either trilogy. I think Marika was the gloam-eyed queen, forced into being the god of the golden order by the elden beast and her empyrean shadow, and so the reason for her having the purple eye and sort of becoming someone who seems to fit the role of the gloam eyed queen in the frenzy ending is like how Gowry hopes Millicent will become a scarlet valkyrie.
      There's some extremely wild speculation that Ranni is actually Marika and Radagon's child and so was a part of the Malenia/Miquella set. (the Cuckoo and golden egg thing. People go nuts over this. Ranni's real body looks like Marika with red hair and shows no traits of Rennala, etc.) "Renna" may have been the actual child in the Radahn/Rykard set, and she's no longer around.

    When it comes to the Melina and Ranni connection, one theory is that Melina was one of the Black Knife Assassins. She has a similar move set in the Morgot fight when you summon her, and she promises to deliver "Destined Death". I'm thinking Melina may have had a role to play in the Assassins stealing the death rune from Maliketh, or at least in the night of black knives. Torrent might just be what Ranni recognized. Hard Maybe, though.

    • @Yal_Rathol

    I don't think Melina is the old Dusk Eyed Queen that Maliketh defeated. There is much more evidence of Melina being a 3rd child of Radagon and Marikia alongside Miquella and Malenia.
    Rather I think what her eye's implied in the Flame of Frenzy ending is that Melina took the power of the Destined Death upon herself becoming a new Gloam Eyed Queen an Empyrean Vassal for the Outer God related to Death. She did this out of desperation knowing it would be the only way she would be able to kill God (you). Melina's hair color changes too in that ending which we know Outer gods have a tendency to do for their Vassal's as seen with the red hair of the Fire Giants coming from the Fell God of Fire.

      I like this theory.
      I, personally, think that Melina is Marika in the same way that Radagon is Marika. I think Melina is an aspect of Marika, being born at the foot of the Erdtree, according to Melina herself, "burned and bodiless". And she can take on a corporeal form when close to the Erdtree within the capital of Leyndell. But this theory of her being Marika admittedly doesn't have a whole lot of evidence to support it. It's a lot of speculation and theory crafting

    • @SinHurr
      @SinHurr 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@darthskele It's not bad. Melina could be, like, Marika's recycled soul, actually. We never see Marika do anything after we enter the Erdtree, after all. She's empty. It's only after shifting to Radagon that the body does anything.

  • @AGermanSpy
    @AGermanSpy 2 ปีที่แล้ว +25

    For the sake of interest, here's the original Japanese text from the War Memorial that describes the Second Defense of Leyndell:
    第二次ローデイル防衛戦 "Second Defensive Battle of Lodil"
    忌み鬼、英雄の屍を築く "The Abhorrent Ogre* piles the corpses of heroes"
    黄金樹に揺らぎなし "The Golden Tree does not waver"
    (*Here Morgott is referred to as 忌み鬼 "imi oni," literally "abhorrent ogre", which obviously does not roll off the tongue quite so well in English as "Omen King")
    Unlike other situations where Frognation took substantial creative liberty to make the game's localization sound more natural (see "Marika's tits"), the English version of this text is an entirely literal, word-for-word translation except for a couple of small changes which appear to have been made purely for flavor:
    "The Second Defense of Leyndell
    The Fell Omen stacks high the corpses of heroes
    Yet the Erdtree remains unshaken"
    The important difference here is the addition of the word "yet" to the third line of the English translation, changing the meaning of that line from an implicit consequence of the preceding line ("The Abhorrent Ogre piles the corpses of heroes; [and] The Golden Tree does not waver") to a more explicit counterpoint ("The Fell Omen stacks high the corpses of heroes; Yet [despite his efforts,] the Erdtree remains unshaken"). The English reading thereby takes on the connotation that Morgott himself was attacking the city, whereas the original Japanese is more ambiguous and better fits the idea that Morgott was fighting the city's attackers. It's funny how a single word can have such a drastic effect on the overall message, and anyone reading the English translation can certainly be forgiven for being misled by it (as I myself was, before coming across hard evidence to the contrary in the game's cut content).
    Another interesting difference is that the Japanese text refers to Leyndell as "Lodil," which I strongly suspect is because writing "Leyndell" in katakana would be a phonetic nightmare and native speakers of Japanese would struggle to pronounce it (see also a variety of similar cases in other media, such as Ronald McDonald being renamed to "Donald McDonald" in Japan because "L" and "R" have the same sound and are represented by the same symbols in the Japanese syllabary, so Paul Marketing decided that Ronald's original name would trip up Japanese audiences with its multitude of alternating Ls and Rs).

    • @31Moth13
      @31Moth13 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think that monument is *supposed* to be ambiguous. The fact that Margit is actually the Lord of Leyndell and loves the Erdtree is a big twist, so that monument being able to be read both ways depending on what knowledge you know is an important part of that.

    • @GTK_Aztech
      @GTK_Aztech 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      To add to the other reply, "yet the Erdtree remains unshaken," with the context that Morgott was defending Leyndell, would seem to signify and add credence to his claim that he is unloved by the Erdtree and by grace, despite his service in its honor.

      I'm saying this off the top of my head so I'm not 100% certain of the details, but I know if you return to Ranni's tower after you marry her but before beating the game, she has an additional set of conversations with you regarding her goals and the Age of Stars. If you have these with her as opposed to just going straight to the tree it tweaks her ending dialog a bit - notably changing "My fair consort eternal" to "My dear consort eternal"

      Keep in mind that the ending dialogues for Ranni is badly localized. In the badly localized dialogues she talks as if she is removing all independence, emotions & other senses from all in the planet you are on before you two leaves but on the origonal japanese dialogues it'd the opposite.
      She leaves the planet with you along with all the interferences of the outer gods and other higher beings. Leaving all the planet's natural & original denizens to give them control of their own destinies. In other words, basically making the world a place like real life.

    "Heroes" in the context of the game might be specifically referring to the savage warriors of the badlands. Note how, when making your character, the class referring to that origin is called "Hero". It's probably more likely that the "strong warriors on both sides" interpretation is more accurate though.

    The craziest thing about the massive success of Elden Ring is the sheer amount of new faces in the whole lore community surrounded it, how their output of content has utterly lapped around Vaati at this point. I wouldn't be surprised if there was a sizable portion of new From players getting into lore who just have no clue that Vaati was like THE lore explainer guy. It's fine he likes to take his time and craft really well put together and definitive video essays, but with relatively few of them out as of now I worry they'll be lost in an ocean of off-the-cuff speculating videos on every little aspect of the entire Elden Ring world.

    What I always found so telling about Malena’s origins beyond her phrasings and the not-at-all subtle filename, is her moveset, skills, and fighting stances are reminiscent if not even identical in spots to a hybrid of the Black Knife Assassins and the Scarlet Valkyries.
    Her knife, “Blade of Calling”, is even eerily similar THE Black Knife used by assassins, it’s exception being it utilizes and scales faith. A lot of people believe that’s what the blades all looked like prior to being infused with Destined Death, and the projectile it launches is a nondeath gold variation of the knive’s death attack.

    I'm wondering if the Gloam-Eyed Queen was, like Radagon, some kind of splinter or familiar of Marika? That could explain why she's referred to as an Empyrean, and how she came to possess the Rune of Death after Marika removed it from the Elden Ring.
    Perhaps the Gloam-Eyed Queen was assigned as it's original caretaker, but when she started using it to empower the Godskins, Marika decided she needed to be taken out and sent Maliketh to do so and become it's new holder?

Just for the fact that the other 4 are nearly pallet-swapped endings that rely entirely on implication and item description to try and get their theme across. I know that some feel that the ambiguity and implication work in their favor, like a lot of FromSoft stories, but I feel the end of the story is where that stuff needs to pay off in some way, and all 4 Elden Lord endings having almost the same dialogue about them and a different skybox is not a terrific pay off.

      The Second Defense of Leyndell, which that heroes line is referring to, is probably from Radahn. We have art of him and Margit fighting and that's the only place that that would fit. The ingame and metagame sources on this are somewhat inconsistent, and most likely just reflect different story iterations at different points in development. For example, in the Elden Ring story trailer, during the scene where Leyndell is launching those giant perfume spikes at an attacking army, if you look closely when the camera zooms out near the end of that shot, you can clearly see that it's Godrick's army attacking the city-the grey plumes on the knights' helmets, and the tree-and-beast surcoats the soldiers are wearing, are unmistakably visible just before the fade to black. Was this the First or Second Defense of Leyndell, or some other battle entirely? Arguments exist for each possibility.

    Woolie, there's an interesting fact about the Prisioner class,that if im not mistaken you originally started with, that may interest you and other Berserk fans:
    There's another factor that links the prisoner class to Griffith besides the metal gimp helm. Spoilers for the Berserk manga from here on out.
    First as we all know The Prisoner represents the archetype of the Spellblade, a swordsman that uses magic along side swordplay to fight. Story wise this makes the prisoner the perfect role for the Tarnished that brings about the Age of the Stars (AoS) ending, which in turn makes The Prisoner a full blown Expy/parallel of Griffith himself in the lore of Elden Ring due to all the parallels/similarities in both Griffith's story and the storyline the Prisioner Tarnish has to walk to reach that ending.
    First lets talk about Griffith. To make things short in the manga Berserk Griffith is taken prisioner for seducing the crown princesses of Midland and spends a year being tortured while wearing the iron mask shown in the video. Later, after being released by his companions he's given the choice to sacrifice said companions in order to kinda ascend/transform into an evil demonic god, a member of the GodHand; and the Prisioner's journey to bring about the AoS is a positive/good twist and interpretation of this, a "Griffith, but not actually Griffith, did nothing wrong" sceneario. How and why?
    The reasons/similarities are as follow:
    First: Griffith was a skilled swordsman that mainly uses a slender blade which allowed him to move freely in combat. The Prisioner, and the Spellblade archetype as a whole, also uses a slender blade and moves freely in combat in order to avoid damage as opposed to a full blown armored magic knight that dives head first in the thick of it and takes hits head on due to wearing a full set of armor.
    Second: While the magic knight is typically show as a fantasy version of a medieval British knight, the Spellblade is sometimes presented in fantasy with an appearance similar to that of a sword wielding French Musketeer. It is theorized by many Berserk fans that the story is mainly set in a fantasy version of France (there's a video somewhere in yt that may point at this) making Griffith a French man furthering the connection between him and the Prisioner/Spellblade.
    Third there's the Prisioner's origins:
    According to the game the Prisioner used to mingled among the elite or was a straight up member before "falling from grace". The elite being probably the Carian Royal Family since the spell that The Prisoner uses at the start of the game is one of Carian origin. In Griffith's case he was very well liked by the nobility of Midland before being sentenced.
    Fourth:
    Griffith's fall was due to him seducing Charlotte, the crown princess of Midland while the Tarnished Prisioner properly becomes the consort of Ranni the (legal) crown royal princes of the Carian Royal Family at the end of her quest, which is necessary to unlock the AoS ending.
    Four and a half:
    At the End of Ranni's quest line, when you become her consort, the Tarnished is gifted with the Darkmoon GreatSword. This would be perfect for the Prisioner who is a Spellblade and the Dark Moon Greatsword is a literal magical sword fit for the consort of a demigod known as the Lunar Princess.
    Fifth:
    In order to achive his ascension into the GodHand Griffith willingly sacrificed his companions, the Band of the Hawk. At the end of Ranni's quest all of your questline companions, Ranni's subordinates, also end up dead due to different circumstances. The main difference being that while Griffith knew what He was doing the deaths of Blaidd and Iji were not intentional on part of the Tarnished and are seen as unfortunate; except for Seluvis, that creep got what he deserved.
    Sixth, and this is the big one:
    Griffith became/ascend into a member of the GodHand, a group of god like demons that serve an Eldritch god that is technically the main antagonist of the whole story, at least thematically speaking that is, the GH and Griffith in particular are the true bad guys. Meanwhile at the AoS ending Ranni, possibly representing an unseen moon themed god/entity (the jury is still out on that one), becomes the goddess of the new aforementioned age just like Marika was the goddess of the previous one. This would mean that as her consort the Tarnished/Prisioner ascended into a demigod, the Elden Lord of the Stars, just like Godfry, Radagon and by extension both their respective children were ascended into god like status when they married Marika.
