    Sigh... Spec Ops: The Line...
    I remember playing through this when it came out. CoD was right in the middle of its New game every year-patriotism fueled road to glory and I was expecting something just like that.
    Then things start to go wrong. I remember thinking that "That's harsh but we can still fix this". Even as the atrocities kept piling up I had this hope that maybe there was a silver lining, maybe there was some way that all of it would be justified, that maybe there would be some semblance of a good ending.
    Then the White Phosphorous scene happened. I think it was sometime between that and the water tankers being blown up that I finally realized that there was no way to fix this. It was just going to be this endless spiral of horror all the way down to the bottom, however far down that was.
    This game was chilling and I love it.

    I would have loved it if, after you complete the game, you get the option to just turn around and leave at the start of the game once you’ve done your mission. This way, developers get to keep their “just walk away” ending, and people don’t immediately jump for it in their first play through.

    Remember, no you couldn't have turned back and radioed for backup as told.
    You couldn't have "not used" willy pete. This is not a FPS, this is a third person shooter.
    You are not the character. This is "Martin Walker" story, and you are just along for the ride. You can chose a few details of how it goes, but not all of them.
    And sure the game blurry things with the fourth wall, but it still is only condemning the main character.

But now I think that almost all instances of this, save maybe 1, were intentional. I have to sit down with this game by myself and take it a little slower than Woolie so as to observe what's really happening. This was *the worst* playthrough to have guests on, *especially* as a comedy-centric channel. That being said, they pointed out a lot of stuff Woolie wouldn't have gotten on his own like how Walker's combat lines get more aggressive as the game goes on.
    Also how did they all stare the hallucination of Lugo as a heavy right in the face and not even notice that it was him? Like, that isn't just missing a line of dialogue or a collectible, that's 3 men going braindead for like 5 seconds then going back to fully functional.

    I think this game would have been better if the loading screens didn't change to tell you your a bad person for playing it. Its cheap and hollow because the player had no choice. I get its walkers fault and he should feel guilty. That doesn't extend to the player. Its much more impactful when a player does something terrible that they did not have to do. Darkest dungeon and This war of Mine have good examples of that where you don't have to be amoral but it makes it easier so the game telling you your a bad person or tying to make you feel bad for your actions actually hits because it was "your actions" not your characters.

    • @hondshoven8477
      @hondshoven8477 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      The game kinda does both. The loading screen and phosphorus scenes are the less subtle but there is also awful thing that you can do as a player and you would barely notice. In multiple places, there are civilians running for their lives that can become collateral. There is also a choice in game where you "must" execute someone. Most player don't realize the right choice is to NOT execute the guys but the soldiers "forcing" you to choose.
      So yeah, some of the horrors come from the plot but gameplay plays a role too if you pay attention.
      Edit : There's another gameplay moment where you're surronded by hostile civilians. The game frames the scene as if you "must" shoot them. Truth is, you can shoot in the air to scare them. Back when the game came out, lot of people felt like shit for not realizing that.

      @@hondshoven8477 Yeah that moment with the mob of civilians was really good. The game does have really good scenes. I just don't get why do many people liked the white phosphorus one I think it highlights the games biggest problem of railroading the player. I heard they wanted to have that be an option to use it but they ran out of development time which is a shame but also understandable. Its still an impressive game but if I bought it without knowing I probably would have been pissed off. Games that blame the player for something it forces you to do are a personal pet peeve of mine. If it doesn't both you all the power to yah :)

    • @DavidJCobb
      @DavidJCobb 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      One interpretation of the game is that it's condemning thoughtlessness -- condemning the choice to sit back, relax, and Shoot Brown Dudes In The Desert For America without even thinking about what you're doing. Equally, it's condemning its own existence and the genre it's a part of -- one which encourages that thoughtlessness. A typical player expects killing to just be the thing they're going to do to advance the plot, and they're taken by surprise when it turns out that no, they needed to think about who they were killing, why, and to what end.
      Every choice the game _does_ give you is essentially the same choice, with it being at its most blatant when you get to the underpass. The game is trying to remind you that when you kill, you are making a moral judgment about who should live and who should not. This carries through all the way to the end: try taking the dialogue from the underpass scene and mentally overlaying it on the ending. Now consider that it applies equally well to every single enemy you kill.
      It doesn't matter that the game doesn't allow you to avoid the plot other than by not playing it. If you played through the game, realized that something wasn't right about how Walker (i.e. a typical player) was going about things, and anticipated things going bad, then the game's condemnation isn't directed at you. If you didn't see it coming, then you earned the game's criticisms.
