King ran the gauntlet like a boss to pay respects to all the gods of the literary world. 'Salem's Lot is essentially contemporary Dracula, Pet Sematery essentially contemporary Frankenstein. The Shining is "fear of ghosts" and of the human condition. IT is the advent of fear itself, and the power of imagination in its dominion over the human mind. The connection to Lovecraft in Needful Things and The Mist...etc. Poe, Lovecraft, Bram Stoker, Mary Shelley, their influences are all present and accounted for at various places throughout his legacy. He has an affinity for carrying on traditions and it shows (shines) in a brilliant way. That's what makes him unparalleled to me.
His book have scary elements but i never call them horror novels. They are essentially thrillers where normal humans are being put into abnormal situations. They are real stories, not just kids getting slaughtered at summer camp.
I think the distinction here is between 'horror' and 'slasher'. While 'slasher' is a sub-genre of horror, it is generally the first thing that comes into people's heads when they think of 'horror'. Personally I'm not a huge fan of slasher, they're where most of the clichés come from. Really, horror is just as malleable and full of potential as any other genre. Of course there is the argument that the tendency of consigning stories into genres results in oversimplification of the stories themselves.
I totally agree; even "IT" is not a horror story in that sense. It´s a book about everything: youth (and how it forms us), growing up in a small town, injustice and the actual horror of facing adulthood. It´s a book about America; most of King´s books are. His monsters and scary elements are often vehicles he uses to describe something inside the society - and something inside every human being.
Yeah so therefore their horror books like what the fuc bro...he takes pride in that s*** so why you going to try to deny him the title of horror ... You do realize horror movies have regular people with regular situations right ... Not only is King an excellent writer, but we don’t talk enough about just how many books he can put out year after year. It’s incredible how efficient he is.
I just bought his book ‘Danse Macabre’ earlier this week and I love it so far. King talks all about the Horror genre and what scares us. I think he should do an update of the book now. That’d be awesome. Love his interviews. He’s awesome.
“There’s no floor under there” No lie that’s one of the reasons I’m a bit cautious about taking elevators 😂 well that and also being in a space like that with other people 😳
Stephen King's stories and characters are so ubiquitous, and so commonplace in my life, it's impossible for me to even comprehend how all of that came from the mind of this one little unassuming guy.😄👍
”But there are things that scare me in the real world. Elevators in New York city, everytime when I get into one. You know the trouble is your imagination is a two-edged sword. It pays the bills but on the other hand you get into an elevator and you think there’s a hole under there.” That was my the best what I heard in that video on 2:04 and this is so truuueeee! 😂😂😂
Pet sematary was the first book of his i read when i was 11. I loved that book so much and i read it so many times that the pages are starting to fall out
The institute is one of his best books ever I’ve read some of his most famous books (the stand,IT,the shining, etc) and this is such a masterpiece please please read it
I was terrified to be on an elevator after I had my first child. I got on and the door closes...I started hyperventilating. I was late to a job interview because I had to walk up 10 flights of stairs. I’m a huge Steven King fan, but who isn’t? He is so amazing. I would love for him to write my autobiography. I wrote a children’s book once. I sent it to Dorrance Publishing Co. They said that they wanted to publish it but that I would have to pay them. I wrote back “Why?” They said that’s how they did it because I was no Steven King. I said “He is my favorite horror author but I don’t think I would want to buy a children’s book from him. I really would but seriously, comparing me to the Master just made me cry.
I know this will sound weird to some people and to some they will sadly know where I'm coming from. Stephen King saved my sanity as a teenager. When i read his books i could leave my horrible home life for a few chapters at a time. When people talk about his drug/alcohol abuse. He's human. Shit happens. Mr. King is the one who told us He had a problem. He's overcome His addictions and is a better man for it. Be like STEPHEN KING!
That's weird, I feel the exact same way about elevators (or lifts here in the UK). Whenever I get in one I can't help but imagine the gaping chasm of darkness right beneath my feet.
I know what truly scares Stephen. He had said going into one of my childrens' bedrooms and finding one of them not breathing! Yes! THAT would scare me, too! I bumped into him, actually in a local store in Falmouth, Maine, a convenience store one September around 1993...….
I like the scene where Bill saw one of his book that Stephen was reading and he ask him does he want to sign it and he said no because he didn't like the ending this is the scene where Bill saw his childhood bike named Silver.
I’ve always been astounded at how well he writes the internal mechanism of childhood. Especially traumatic childhood. Some of it is a little dramatic...not that many kids speak so eloquently in real life, but when I read It and The Body (Stand By Me), I was just so amazed at how well he got the inner workings of the childhood psyche going. And boy does he like to put his children characters through hell 😂
3lement2010 Not all of the books there is short story’s like the Shawshank redemption which has 100 pages there is apt. Pupil which has 200 pages and there is the body which has 300 pages and there is the breathing method which has 70 pages
I'd suggest "Carrie," which is short, and "Different Seasons," a collection of four novellas that Barbrady is talking about...it includes the stories that were made into the films "The Shawshank Redemption," "Stand By Me," and "Apt Pupil."
The English have Shakespeare,The Italian's have Opera, but we've got Westerns & Stephen King,&the Institute exemplifies an Old Master deploying his craft!!:)
