Thanks for the review - it was helpful in putting it together! The reason I bought the Hovel was because a standard pencil sharpener does not allow for the creation of the longer, sharper lead that one requires for soft sketching in Botanical Art, where one would otherwise have to use a sharp knife to customise the pencil and risk slicing off a finger. Also, a standard pencil sharpener cannot accommodate different pencil thicknesses. If you are just looking for a basic pencil sharpener, this is probably not your tool - but if you are an artist who needs fine control over your pencil lead and wants to sharpen safely, then this is a great solution.

I have one of these too! The Høvel is fantastic and looks so cool. I've been practicing with it and have truly mastered my points!

It's a beautiful thing, Michael - but as you asserted earlier in the presentation - it doubles as a paperweight, & whilst I am an extremely patient man, I think I'd like my pencils sharpened a little more rapidly; I fully appreciate that you could ruminate whilst putting a custom point on your pencil - so the therapeutic element is clear. Unsure that I'd pay £50.00 for same - I'd settle for the DUX brass sharpener (also featured), & not because of the price necessarily, but the ergonomics of the latter appear to offer you greater purchase (hold). It's always a pleasure watching your videos - Thank you !! :D

Thanks for the comment, Andrew. Yeah, I think this artifact is just a little more of a toy than an extremely useful tool. While a nice one - 'toy' I mean - it would certainly not land in my toolbox, could I only opt for owning one pencil sharpener.

Agreed, Michael, though it is rather novel :D

For this price, you could get a curved blade which would work better.

The biggest advantage is that you can get any angle you want, plus you can flatten the lead for e.g. calligraphy. Very handy especially if working with softer core pencils which tend to break easily in the twisty-style pencil sharpeners.

Thankyou! I struggle not to break charcoal 'leads' in traditional sharpeners, so this was looking super attractive.
And I do love lovely things. In this case it's far safer than my usual scalpel stuck into an eraser in a leather roll, but might be too slow and messy for workshops. Still deciding… :)

Thanks for a good review. The sharpener looks impressive but not very practical. The same result could be achieved with a sharp penknife. I'll stick with my Kum sharpeners.

Martyn's Nan thanks much. And: yes, you are right!

Maybe it would last a lifetime, but who is going to be making blades to support it at the end or after a lifetime?

Scrively how are you my friend. Yes i agree with other commentators it is a very impressive looking sharpener but how easy is it to use. But i do like the look of it and think it is worth giving a try. Thanks as always for another excellent review and video see you on the next.

Wayne Clarkson hey! I am very well! Hope you too! Yeah, as I say in the review, it’s not the most effective way to sharpen a pencil. But that is also not what this product is trying to solve. People also cook coffee in very cumbersome ways, just because they like it more than an „insert-pad-and-press-button“-coffee . There’s something for everyone in this world 😊.

With the same potato peeler mechanism you're better off just get the Caran d'Ache pencil peeler. 😅 Half the price, similar novelty feeling.
