  • Prismacolor pencils are notorious for lead breakage and I have been struggling to find a pencil sharpener to solve this problem for a long time. In today's video, I'm going to give my honest review of the Høvel Pencil Plane as well as how it compares to a $6 pencil sharpener.

    hey. cabinet maker here, i have been using a hand planes to shapen my pencil for years and finds that i give a much greater point to my pencil. from watching this video and other a like i feel like i should give you some tricks of the trade when it comes to using a plane as a shaper.
    1. always keep the plane still and run the pencil over the plane and hold the pencil closer to the lead end. this will give far more control
    2. dont put the blade in completely parallel to the foot of the plane. so one side of the blade will cut more off then the other side. then this means that you can start off with take more meat off and work your way over to a finer cut so it doesn't break the end of the tip
    3. pass the pencil over the plane at a slight angle to the blade. this will give a far better finish

    So one thing I was taught by my high school art teacher, is that often if a pencil led is breaking frequently it's because the led has already been broken. This can happen if the pencil gets dropped or thrown around. So her advice was to be gentile when storing your pencils and do your best not to drop them. This is only so useful, because shipping and what not before you get the pencil can beat it up. I was interested to hear about other causes because I'm sure dropping or mishandling pencils isn't the only reason they break but I though I'd mention it in case it's helpful pointing out another way this problem can arise.
    Enjoyed the video thanks for sharing!!

      This is more true for Graphite pencils as their leads are very brittle and delicate, other pencils are less so but can still break in the same way, but it's a good rule to look after your pencils anyway :)
      It varies with different types of pencils but the reason sharpeners snap pencils is often because the blades are dulling and not cutting so well which catches on the pencil and all the torsion force from twisting the it further snaps it as it cant take the strain. The Pencil plane is probably digging a groove into the pencil lead and pulling on it with tension force, but the rest of it is secured in the pencil and so you rip it with opposite forces in a different way. Even worse if the lead has shattered further down and you end up pulling out half of the pencil lead lol.
      Scalpels/box cutters can also take uneven chunks out of the pencils depending on your hands, cutting technique etc.
      I find that sandpaper on blocks is the best non destructive way, but takes some getting used to and can be a little messy lol.

      That's good advice! Definitely always better to be kind to your pencils. In my experience, with prisma breakage, there definitely are some that just seem determined to break, but it happens a lot to the same colors over and over (Tuscan Red is terrible!!) so my theory is that it has more to do with some colors being more delicate/soft than others, as opposed to being already broken.

    T'GAAL all the way for Prismas. You do need to replace them from time to time as the blade will get dull. Also, I have heard that the makeup eyebrow pencil sharpeners work well and are made for the soft core makeup pencils. I haven't tried those yet tho.

    Yay! I use my T’gaal for my prismas too, I use the #3 setting and only rarely do I have an issue. It works great for ALL my colored pencils...except sadly my square/larger barrels. Also you’re my hero for turning the pencil and not the sharpener!! ❤️
    Edit: the clear T’gaal is a must because if the sharpener is full it WILL NOT work.

    the TGAAL and the bullet are my two favorite sharpeners. I saw the Hovel and wanted to try it, but instead of sinking all that money into that plane, I bought a $12 "mini plane" off Amazon to try. I figured that would be close enough to the Hovel to at least test the method, even if it wasn't the actual product. You stated all the arguments for each beautifully.
    I use the TGAAL and bullet pretty interchangeably, I don't think I really have a preference so far. I don't use pencil as often as you do since I'm not an artist by profession, so I haven't had to try to change blades in the TGAAL yet. One thing - if you have a Daiso store near you, I have seen the TGAAL sharpeners there before, so that would put the price at $1.50 if anyone wants to try picking one up to try for cheap. Thanks for the video!

      Ahh, so cool! So we have the same favorite sharpeners then!👯‍♀️ You were smart to try the mini plane! I wish I had taken that route. Just so desperate for a perfect solution to my problem.😬

    I have used a victorinox Swiss Army Knife to sharpen my pencils for more than a decade and it still holds its edge. If sharpening pencils with just knives was good enough for the masters, it's good enough for me. You figure out the technique as you use it more and more and you can have any thickness of lead as you want. As an artist you know the material's properties intimately, so don't be scared of using a properly sharp knife (box cutter/blades are too flimsy to provide the stability needed to properly shave a pencil.) I feel strongly about this subject, as you can see :)

    I tried and liked tgaal sharpener too, but won’t be getting a new one for same reasons.
    My current favourite is “M+R Double Hole Round Brass Sharpener”. It uses the same blades as the bullet sharpener, but this has two holes for standard and bigger pencils. I use the bigger hole for standard coloured pencils too when I want shallower point, because the sharpening angle is not as steep. And it’s easy to change the blades!

  • @Enhancedlies
    @Enhancedlies 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    i just use my Stanley Knife, box cutter etc, and its perfect. I have sandpaper to sand the lead when exposed. Once you get the hang of it its so easy and quick, just do it over a bin to catch the shavings!

    I used to live in Arizona. If I had a problematic pencil I would put it outside for a half hour and let the ambient heat soften the wax binder. Next use would be normal, no breaking. With a new box I would just leave the whole thing out there. Use a regular Kum sharpener or an xacto electric sharpener and no more issues with my prismacolor pencils.

    • @KendyllHillegas
      @KendyllHillegas  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've tried versions of this approach but I think they never get as fully melted as they would being outside in a very hot climate. Maybe I should try the oven🤔

    I'm glad you reviewed this! I saw the ads too and they made it seem very convincing, although, I had yet to actually look it up! I know I would've stopped at the $65 price tag though. It's funny you mention the wider angle to preserve stability, after all, that is how Prismacolor sells their pencils. It makes sense they would sell them optimally sharpened. I've had very good luck with the Westcott iPoint Halo Electric Sharpener. It has a more "traditional" point, but it has an automatic turn off once it's sharpened (reducing waste), and it releases the pencil in such a way that doesn't cause tension or friction on the lead when removing. To your point in another comment though, it doesn't work with short pencils or extenders, so I still rely on a manual sharpener at that point.

    €I’m looking at a potential €95.90 cost if I go ahead with my purchase with a 10% discount…… without a base
    Good points for come from looking at it
    1. It’s portable
    2. You can use the bottom of it without a base
    3. With a little patience I think any soft lead pencil will survive 😍
    Verdict after watching your video

    I use a berol electric sharpener for my pencils...works like a charm (and they have multiple widths too). Great review. I kept getting these ads too and they're almost a meme now with my artists friends and I--ha!

      @KendyllHillegas  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for sharing! That's great to know -- I haven't tried the Berol one. I've had several electric sharpeners and I love them, but my gripes are that 1.) you can't sharpen to the end of the pencil or use with an extender and 2.) they can burn through a lot of pencil if you're not careful.
      Also I am dying to see a literal meme of the Høvel ads 😂

    I've heard Lisa from Lachrifineart mention that the prismacolor pencils break A LOT. Apparently something in the way they are made that makes them break more, have more pencils where the lead is off center and all that stuff' I myself use caran d'ache pencils, but I know they are expensive.

    first time I see this, really interesting. Yes, I do a lot of drawing with color pencils and especially my favorite colors need sharpening often. Thanks, listening to your explanation saved me a lot of money.
    I did not hear the name of the small pencil sharpener you use, could you please let me know what it is called?

    I use a T'gaal sharpener for my pencils and have never had a problem with it. I set it at 3 for prismas and 5 for polychromas it works great. I've had mine for over a year and it still works great, but I'm just a hobbiest so I don't use my pencils all the time.
    The Høvel Pencil Plane seems like a pain in the butt knowing my luck I would cut myself its also more money then I would ever spend on a sharpener.

    I have just received the Hovel as a Christmas gift and although taken with it’s beauty, it seemed very difficult to use. While watching your review and others, I have practiced on my cheap HB pencils.......feel a little better now as have managed to create a good point on my coloured stubbles, which need replacing, but were too small for my desk top sharpener I usually use! Horses for courses I suppose, will check out the brass bullet on Amazon, but people warn of fakes, how do we avoid them? Thank you.

    No love for KUM sharpeners? The plastic Long point, costs around 50 cents and it's easily the best pencil sharpener out there. The points it produces, are so perfect, like they where cut with leizer! It's not too long but neither normal length eather, which allows the tip, to have some strenght and dont break easily. That's perfection in my book, that only costs 50 cents.

    Thanks for this, I was contemplating purchasing one for charcoal pencils. If it breaks colored pencils, it certainly will not work on charcoal. I’ll stick with the Xacto knife and find a better place to spend the $65 😂

  • @creativi-tea398
    @creativi-tea398 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I also used to use scalpels to sharpen my pencils, but the best non destructive way to sharpen delicate pencils that I have found is to use sandpaper. I made a small bracing board.
    (similar to those used in lino cutting like in this link: artway.co.uk/wooden-mdf-bench-hook-lino-cutting-board/).
    So that it wouldn't slip about on the table and then cut a load of thin Acrylic squares and lightly glued varying grades of Sandpaper to it. Something like 3M spraymount so you can replace the paper when it gets worn.
    Depending on the grade of sandpaper and the pressure you use vary the results, but it can get a nice sharp or rounded tip/edges without putting strain on the pencil. (Using Wet & Dry sandpaper so it can be easily cleaned with water)
    It can be a little slow at first, but you can get fairly quick once you are used to it. And i just made mini sanding sticks on bits of acrylic for travel, though it can be a little messy haha. :)
    This little Tgaal thingy looks good in concept, might get one and try to do some tinkering to get it working better. :)

    Surprisingly I never had much of a breaking problem with Prismacolors ... just one pencil didn't want once. My Polychromos break much more for some reason.
    As for sharpeners, maybe this is something for you too. I'm only using these anymore now m.media-amazon.com/images/I/51MVM6h1xBL._AC_SX355_.jpg I don't think it depends which brand you buy of this kind, I had great experiences with these so far after going through different sharpeners as well and always having them get dull after a week or two and looked for something a little bit more long-lasting. Plus the blades are changeable easily. (However I'm too dumb for that for some reason, tried once and failed ^^)

    • @KendyllHillegas
      @KendyllHillegas  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow, really?? I've never used Polychromos since I like super soft pencils, but I'd always heard they were better with breakage. And that sharpener is super simple to the main one I use! It really did help with breakage, but didn't eliminate it. Being able to easily change the blades was key!👍🏻
