My mother was an associate producer on “Bride of the Monster”. I remember as a kid seeing an original script with all of the production notes on it. It was titled “Bride of the Atom”. My mother first met Ed Wood at a New York typing contest. My mom could type 180 WPM on an old fashioned typewriter but she came in second to Ed Wood who could type 210 WPM. She said that he got into script writing because he could knock out a script in no time. She also said that she never saw him cross dress on set. She enjoyed mimicking Bela as to how he would call her “Rita darling”.

Not only my favorite Tim Burton film, it's also my favorite Johnny Depp film.
BTW Martin Landau's daughter Juliet played the actress that Ed thought was going to finance the movie. Juliet is probably best known for her role as Drusilla on the TV series Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

She was also cast as the vampire Hester, for the web series Vampire: The Masquerade - LA by Night. Her character was part a cabal of Tremere, vampires that can do blood sorcery, called the Wyrd Sisters.

Vampira's lawsuit failed because she and Elvira were both doing slight variations of a character from the popular Charles Addams cartoon strip running in "the New Yorker" since the 1930s. When adapted for television in 1964 the character was given the name "Morticia Addams".

In real life Lugosi and Karloff were very friendly and respectful of each other. On Son of Frankenstein Lugosi had a very bad pay deal. Karloff who was a founder of the actors union lobbied that Bela got better money. The result was one of Bela's best performances on film.

I remember seeing Bill Murray say "sure" in the baptism scene in the trailer. I was sold from that point on. Another highlight for me was seeing Vampira take the city bus.
Also, if someone else didn't mention it below, there was an interview with Dolores about the film. She spoke highly of Johnny Depp, but didn't really approve of all the language either. She also didn't care for Horse Face and her approach to the role.

I suggest having a quick glance at Bela Lugosi's life story, because it's fascinating. Born in 1882, he was a successful stage and screen actor in his native Hungary, but because of his association with the short-lived Communist government of 1919 he was forced to flee the country. He ended up in the U.S with almost no English, having to start from zero while aged in his late 30s. He was 49 when he made the movie Dracula (after starring in the play version four years earlier).

I liked this movie so much, I sent Martin Landau an epic homemade birthday card (it was coming up in about a week or so), a letter telling how much I loved his performance in this movie and just how great the other actors were too, and two 8x10s to sign. It was about two and a half years later, but he signed the two photos. On the one from Ed Wood (the scene were he and Depp were doing the double jointed hand thing) and he wrote 'Thanks for the kind words!!!"

Funny story- the real Dolores Fuller (Sarah Jessica Parker’s character) had a partial estate sale back in late 2000s (she hadn’t passed yet). A audio techie bought her 1/4” reel to reel tape machine and sold it to me for my transfer biz. Great condition and still works like a charm.

This movie is hilarious and touching at the same time. Johnny Depp, Bill Murray and Martin Landau were excellent. The look and atmosphere were pretty realistic. The actress that declared, No Water, No Liquids!, is Martin Landau’s daughter Juliet. Juliet Landau played the kooky vampire Drusilla, on Buffy The Vampire Slayer, the tv show.
I have to rewatch it again soon. Great reaction! ❤️❤️

I think my favorite scene is the Orson Welles one. You have the writer/director of one of the best (if not the best) movies of all time and the writer/director of one of the worst (if not the worst) movies of all time, discussing about vision and creativity, as if they are on the same level, as equals, and for a moment, they are. To me this is Burton's best film, no contest, and I actually love his early work.

My sister was a master at finding quirky and interesting movies for us to watch when we were younger. I had no idea what I was going to watch when we saw this in the theatres, but we absolutely loved it. I was still a teen and knew only Burton's Batman movies and Edward Scissorhands. But this, this was completely different and utterly great. Still love this movie and I'm very sorry more people still don't know about it.

Enlisted in the US Marine Corps in May of 1943. His claims to have worn women's underwear beneath his uniform in battle never seemed to distract him from his duty: In addition to taking part in combat in the Marshall Islands and Noumea, he also survived the bloody battle for Tarawa. By all accounts he was fierce in combat. During the invasion he had most of his front teeth knocked out in hand-to-hand combat with a Japanese soldier he eventually killed. Wood later served in a G-2 (intelligence) unit in the South Pacific until he was shot in the legs by a Japanese machine-gunner. The wounds became gangrenous and he served out the remainder of his time as an office typist, and was honorably discharged in 1944. He was awarded the Silver and Bronze Stars, two Purple Hearts and a Sharpshooter's Medal. By all accounts, Wood was an exemplary combat marine.
His first wife, Norma McCarty, kicked him out of their house on their wedding night when she discovered he was wearing women's underwear. The marriage was never consummated, serving as grounds for an annulment less than four months later.

My friend Jim Myers (aka Professional Wrestler George "The Animal" Steele) looked so much like Plan 9 Actor Tor Johnson that he was hired to do the Ed Wood movie. While Jim was a bad guy (heel) during most of his Wrestling career he was actually a well educated, very intellengent guy and a very nice man. Jim loved making this movie and became friendss with both Depp and Landau.. For most of his Wrestling career Jim only Wrestled on Holidays and during the Summer. He was a Physical Education Teacher and Football Coach at a High School in Detroit,. Eventually his Wrestling salary so far suppased his Teaching salary he quit Teaching to become a full time Wrestler. Geeoge Steele (Jim's alter ego) is in all of the Wrestling Hall of Fames (including the WWE) and became a huge star.

Actually saw it on the night of the premiere, I believe (and got an oversized Ed Wood t-shirt that lasted quite awhile). It's so sweet and sympathetic to the human condition, and it's likely Johnny Depp and Tim Burton's finest hour (and of course Martin Landau is amazing).

In the 80s, they made a clip movie called "It Came From Hollywood" showcasing many of the 40's, and 50's monster movies with commentary from Gilda Ratner, Dan Aykroyd, and Cheech and Chong. Even though Bela's opinion of Boris Karloff was inaccurate (and his cursing), the outburst is just too funny for me to be bothered by it. Also I felt bad for Vincent D'Onofrio, that he spent time trying to sound as much like Orson Wells as possible, only to be dubbed over. But it was Maurice Lamarche doing the voice, so that part is amusing. "Oh, what luck! There's a French fry in my beard!"

Dracula, The Black Cat (with Karloff), The Body Snatcher (again with Karloff), and maybe Island of Lost Souls as well, would be my recommendations. I think Glen Or Glenda and Bride of the Monster also count as legitimately great Lugosi performances.

    • @Scary__fun
      @Scary__fun ปีที่แล้ว +1

I think Glen or Glenda is actually a very touching movie and was way ahead of it's time in addressing people who are looked down upon for being themselves. As for Bela Lugosi, I watched a bunch of his horror movies in the 70's as a kid on Sunday afternoon tv when they used to air old genre movies. I saw this Ed Wood movie in theater and loved it. It really moved me that one of the biggest movie stars in the world in the 30s fell so low in his old age. His foul mouth also had me cracking up. I had watched several movies by Ed Wood before this biopic and found it great that they accurately simulated exact scenes from the movies including the "pull the string" scene with stock footage of buffalo and Bela admiring the flowers. I didn't know that was the last scene he filmed so it was even more emotional finding out.

To the Lugosi suggestions that have already been made, I will add three more: *The Raven* (1935), which again teams him with Karloff; *The Devil Bat* (1940), and the closest thing to a real *Dracula* sequel that Bela was ever permitted to make, *Return of the Vampire* (1943).

Back in the day, some wrestlers had day jobs. George was one of those guys. He was a teacher. That fact, to me anyway, makes his character so much better because he was so believable as a monster….

I hope "Ed Wood" inspired you to check out Lugosi's Dracula or Karloff's "Bride of Frankenstein" or the original "King Kong". These are classic iconic horror flicks. There is also an atrociously bad horror flick from the 1930's, that Ed Wood would've absolutely loved, called "Maniac". Miraculously, it got past Hays Code censors with its nudity, bad acting and bizarre scenes. A one-of-a-kind, weird, schlock horror film for it's time!

What makes this work so well, I think, is that they didn't let the truth stand in the way of a great story. It was a beautiful love letter to Ed Wood, Bela Lugosi, Vampira, Tor Johnson, Criswell and Bunny Breckinridge.
Other great non documentaries with some to less facts behind them:
Shadow of the Vampire (2000) - Max Schreck, star of Nosferatu was an actual vampire. (Watch Nosferatu (1922) first.)
RKO 281 (1999) - Why Citizen Kane almost destroyed Orson Welles rather than launching his career. (Watch Citizen Kane (1941) first.)
Forgotten Silver (1995) - Peter Jackson uncovers the life and career of forgotten pioneer of international cinema, Colin McKenzie.
