    Ivan, you are a rockstar. Thank you! I had created an iMovie with photos, video, and music with the intention of creating a DVD for elderly family members to view. How frustrating to learn that iDVD was gone. I downloaded the Burn app as suggested, and in a couple minutes created the DVD I had been attempting to create for hours. And, I'm a 66 yo woman not prone to patience around these types of things. Thank you, Thank you!

      Welcome aboard. Be patient with yourself.
      I can assure you that macOS has features that are similar to what you know on Windows. The names may be different, but the concepts exist. Just give yourself time to find them. For example, “Control Panel” is very much like “System Preferences.”

      @@HeyIvan By chance would you know how to create ISO files from multiple MPEG videos? I used to do that on my PC with DVD-Flick (Windows only). It would allow me to put TWO full-length films on one DVD (albeit not great quality, but it saved discs and was an easy way to convert all my old VHS to DVD).

    • @HeyIvan
      @HeyIvan  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wow! ISO files! You're taking me waaaay back. It's been years since I made any ISOs. And back when I did that, I was on Windows. macOS can mount ISO files without any special software. In fact, I have used VLC to open them, too.
      After some hunting around, I found an article that seems to work. I ran through the steps and it worked for me. Here's the link: www.techlunar.com/how-to/create-iso-file-mac

      What kind of DVD player are you using? Not all DVDs can play every kind of disc. There are DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW, and so on.

    This is an awesome video! Very professional. Thank you. I'm an old Apple fan who is painfully familiar with it's policy of shedding off it's followers in the name of, ahem, progress. Still burning DVD's too. My workaround is a copy of Mac OS Maverick and Apple iLife 09 on an external hard drive and then booting off of that once I've edited my movie on the main drive. Unfortunately not all the iDVD themes work even in Maverick but enough to get by with modifications. Probably will switch to Wondershare eventually as it is the app most recommended by the old hands on the forums. I used to use Toast back in the day but it's been bought out and not what it used to be and not highly recommended. Again, an awesome video.

    Hi
    What if I have a tv series to burn? Can the "Burn" software let me watch each episode in any order or just make every episode into one big movie?
    Thanks

    • @HeyIvan
      @HeyIvan  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The burn app can make a simple DVD menu that can collect multiple files onto a single disc. You'll launch each video from the menu in your player.
      You might want to consider Plex, though. It allows you to take a collection of video files, name them in a certain way, and then stream them to other devices in your home for free. It's over at www.plex.tv. I use it to do what you're talking about.
      In my case, I've ripped my DVDs into digital files and placed them in a folder that Plex can see. It's pretty smart about retrieving poster art and episode data based on how you name the files.
      You can install Plex on an existing computer or some of the smart Network Attached Storage drives out there, like Synology, can run it in the background without a standard PC.
      If you follow that approach, then all you need is the disc you want to rip and an app like dumbofab dvd ripper.

  • @EthanButler
    @EthanButler 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Thank you so much for making this! I have a question:
    For the paid versions of Wondershare and Cisdem, is there a custom menu option where I can change the background to whatever the video I'm burning showcases? Or are they all the built-in designs?

    • @HeyIvan
      @HeyIvan  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey, @EthanButler. I just updated Cisdem and took a look around Wondershare. The free versions both allow you to tweak the options for the theme you choose. Both of them allow you to set a background image for your DVD menu.
      Let me know if you think it would be working making a video on.

    why does my drive thing keep spitting my dvd out before it'll do anything>??

    • @HeyIvan
      @HeyIvan  ปีที่แล้ว

      If a burn fails on a specific disc, you need to toss that one and try again with a new blank disc. Unfortunately, that's the best way to move forward.
      If you continue to have issues burning and are using a dongle, like an adapter, that could possibly cause an issue. In my case, I have three different USB to USB-C adapters and one of them won't let a burn finish.
      If you've ruled out the dongle, the issue could be the burner you're using. Although, that's probably unlikely. I might try using the Music app to burn a playlist to disc and see whether that works. If that works, the problem might be something else.
      Please try my suggestions in order and let me know if any of them work.

    Hi Ivan! Which paid burning SW of all available would you recommend for a Mac M1 Sonoma? I've migrated from Windows to Mac and I'm a bit lost since I have realized there is no proper alternative to, e.g. Nero Burning ROM with which I have good experience. I have Pioneer BDR-XS07UHD external optical disk and need to burn audio (flac, wav), DVDs, BDs occasionally. Checked a lot of reviews and support reports for e.g. NTI Burn Dragon, NCH Express Burn, Toast etc. but due to many angry customers reporting problems and sw hanging I can not decide which way to go. I don't care so much about the price just want a reliable SW that would perform well on my new Mac. And btw, I'm not adherent to tweak Mac's system settings like kernel extensions in order to enable installation. Thx, Mark.

    • @HeyIvan
      @HeyIvan  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey, Mark. Thanks for the comment.
      It looks like you've given me some homework. I haven't used NTI Dragon Burn or NCH Express Burn. Toast is okay, but it doesn't feel like a polilshed gem. It can do the job, but in more of a no-frills way.
      I hesitate to point you in a direction until I give both NTI and NCH a try.
      I've been known to dive into a command line from time to time, but I try to stay away before I do something that causes me to have to reinstall everything.
      I've put these apps on my list.
      If there's a free trial, that's where I would recommend starting.

      I just replied to your other post. I will admit that I have spent a good amount of time in my life thinking about how computers and software work. I do think I'm able to pick up most apps quickly. But, I also have this problem where if I can't figure out what a program is doing, I'll keep on trying and trying and trying ... sometimes for hours and hours and hours until I figure it out. Sometimes for days and weeks. I always feel like, "There just HAS to be a way to make this work."
      Definitely, my approach isn't normal. However, my mission now is to try and make complex tech topics simple for all of us.
      To that end, I've given you a number of recommendations on your other comment and I'll be happy to make videos about any of the topics that spark your interest. (I'm even willing to buy or rent software and learn it first so you can know if what you're thinking about might be the right solution for you.)

      Hello to you, too. Thanks for watching.
      You know, the DVDs I've made have mainly included the audio as part of the video file. So I can't say that I have experience with this. However, I know exactly what you're talking about. Many of the commercial DVDs I have include at least a couple of language tracks and subtitles in multiple languages.
      I'm looking to see whether Cisdem DVD Burner, Wondershare DVD Creator, and Toast 20 include the options and will get back to you.
      Wikipedia has a good summary of what's possible with DVD-Video, and it also has a list of DVD authoring software, most of which has been discontinued.
      I'll report back on what I find.

    • @HeyIvan
      @HeyIvan  ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry for the lateness of my reply. If a burn fails on a specific disc, you need to toss that one and try again with a new blank disc. Unfortunately, that's the best way to move forward.
      If you continue to have issues burning and are using a dongle, like an adapter, that could possible cause an issue. In my case, I have three different USB to USB-C adapters and one of them won't let a burn finish.
      If you've ruled out the dongle, the issue *could* be the burner you're using. Although, that's probably unlikely. I might try using the Music app to burn a playlist to disc and see whether that works. If that works, the problem might be something else.
      Please try my suggestions in order and let me know if any of them work.

      That's a bummer. Do you know if that Sony DVD player is compatible with the type of disc you're trying to play? Some players can only play DVD-R discs, while others can play DVD+R. And others can play a whole variety of disc and video formats.

    Cool what about using burn to compact a large video file into the dvd I tried compacting 5.3 gb into the Burn app but it won’t let me so back to paid wondershare I go . Wondeshare can “fit to disk” which you forgot to mention . 😢

    • @HeyIvan
      @HeyIvan  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You're right. I didn't mention that. Both Cisdem DVD Burner and Wondershare DVD Creator have an option to "Fit to disc," which re-encodes your video or videos to reduce both video quality and file size.
      As you have probably noticed by now, the standard DVD-Video format is only 480p, which means if you take a 4K video and burn it to DVD, you'll see quite a bit of that quality is lost as it's converted to a format that will play back on most DVD players.
      A standard DVD disc can hold just under 5 GB of data. If your movie is larger than that and you have a dual-layer DVD burner, you can use a dual-layer disc and choose the DVD9 format instead of the DVD5 format. Dual-layer discs can hold just under 9 GB of data.
      Both Wondershare and Cisdem have a feature called "Fit to disc," which re-encodes your video at an even lower quality than 480p to reduce the file size enough that it will fit on a standard or dual-layer DVD disc.
      Unfortunately, I have been unable to find any documentation on the Wondershare website that explains exactly how these apps re-encode and what settings they use. On the Cisdem DVD Burner User Guide, I found a bit about how the "Fit to Disc" feature works. Here's the link: www.cisdem.com/resource/cisdem-dvd-burner-user-guide.html#9
      The three options are: Fit to Disc, Standard, and High quality. To me that says: low quality, standard quality, high quality.
      The free and open source Burn app doesn't have any preset quality features. However, you can use a separate DVD encoder app and manually adjust specific video quality settings to find a nice balance between quality and file size. I use Apple's Compressor to do that. It costs around $50 USD. apps.apple.com/us/app/compressor/id424390742?mt=12&v0=www-fcp-compressor-app-compressor-four
      Using a separate encoder will give you the most flexibility, but there is a learning curve.
      Let me know if this helps.

    Hey Ivan,
    I would like to do a similar task, but instead of DVD I would like to use blu ray discs. I have some Polish films that I would like to put into blu ray format, to watch on blu ray discs with my player and tv. They are currently in my hard drive storage in mkv format. Is this possible using an M2 Macbook Pro?
    I have the wondershare dvd creator software, but am lacking a disc burner, any suggestions which (hopefully budget option) will work well with my macbook pro?
    Thank you so much!

      I found a BluRay burner on Amazon. I cannot vouch for whether it's any good, but the reviews and the questions seem to show that it is compatible with macOS. My own strategy would be to buy it and see if it works, and send it back if it's no good.

      So, a little background. I filmed a variety show put on by my community on my iPhone. After some editing in iMovie, I got it down to 1:53 at 14gb. Because we had an intermission, I found a way to split the video into two halves. I used Wondershare to burn the DVD-9 discs. It went pretty smoothly. Thanks for your tip on clicking "ignore" before burning. I didn't see that in the user guide.
      One thing to note. I first made the mistake of putting both videos up at the same time thinking I could choose which one I wanted to get burned first. Wondershare burned both videos onto the same DVD-9. Not sure how I got all those gigabytes stuffed onto one DVD. I've been separated them out into two different files, and was able to save the settings individually.

      It looks like the Xbox should be able to play both standard DVDs and Blue-ray discs. So, the method I describe in my video should work.
      If you want more flexibility in the kind of discs you make, then you might want to look at one of the paid apps. They will allow you to add both photos and videos to your disc with a menu to navigate the content.
      If you want more space for either higher definition content or to hold more videos, you'll need to look into Blue-ray burners and Blue-ray authoring apps.

      You know, I just tried with one of my MOV files. Burn offered to convert the "incompatible file" to MPG for me. It worked.
      Might you have a different MOV you can try? Does that MOV file open and play in QuickTime or some other app? I've had a few really old MOV files that I can't get to play on my Mac no matter what I do. Although, VLC has been handy for most of kinds of video playback.

      It actually WAS an MPG originally. I watched a video by MacMost on how to trim videos using QuickTime. I trimmed a vid and it will only save it as an MOV. Then I tried to burn it and it won't work. And Burn won't offer to convert it for me. Funny enough, after my comment yesterday, I tried a different MPG and it won't work either. I read a thread on Burn's forum that said there are two types of MPEG-2 videos? I'm trying to render my videos as the other type of MPEG-2 and will try that. If not, I'm gonna use VLC. I coincidentally have it pulled up and ready to download right now.@@HeyIvan

      Success! I re-recorded my video (it's an EasyCap VHS converter) this time as a "DVD MPG" (who knew there were two types? lol) and Burn will now handle the MPGs properly. Worked like a charm!@@HeyIvan

      @@HeyIvan Okay, so I have a Maxell DVD-R Disc which I have already burned a video from Windows Media Player (my old Windows 7) on it, and it doesn’t seem to be working on certain DVD Players like my built in DVD Player from my TV, and my other dvd player (which Is old I think)- but it works on Blu Ray Player. (Which is modern) However my MAIN problem is actually playing the dvd on said DVD Players (My built in Tv) When it gets to the menu it seems to be working fine and when I press the folder on the screen, it goes to another file inside of that folder, I press that and it just goes back to the beginning folder again! And There’s no way I can get past it. I’ve tried finalising it with windows 10 but I just don’t know if it’ll work… maybe it’s the actual disk or the dvd player itself? What do you think? Sorry if I’ve made this more complicated than it needs to be. There’s a “HELP” video on my channel where I show an example of it not working. So I was wondering if you can help 😅

      Hey, Monique! Are you taking about a free option? I can look at a few more to see whether any other free apps show more theme choices.
      The three paid apps I discuss have a collection of pre-built themes you can use and tweak.

      I really liked iDVD. It was great and did more than everything I needed.
      I'll look at a few other free and open source options to see if any offer some sort of customizable themes. The paid options all offer the ability to customize their themes, at least somewhat.

      According to my own searching, they can last up to 20 years. However, you make a valid point. Hard drives can fail way before then. I recommend using a 3-2-1 backup strategy to protect the things that matter most. Three copies of everything, two different storage types, and one copy offsite.

    • @HeyIvan
      @HeyIvan  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Tell me more about the kind of CD you wish to make. Music CD? Data disc? For use on PC.
      If you're using the Music app or macOS, you can put songs into a playlist and burn that to a disc as a music CD, if you have a CD or DVD burner. If you want to make a data disc that plays on only Mac, you can just insert a blank disc and drag items to it and then burn. However, if you want more options, you'll need a CD authoring app.
      I've only ever needed to burn the first two kinds of discs.
      Let me know what you're trying to make and I can offer suggestions.

      If you’re trying to use the disc to just hold files, like a hard drive does, I wouldn’t recommend this approach.
