I love how there are groups of people just mixing single elements with single elements in the same column, like "hell + hell", "lava + fire" etc, instead of mixing other elemenths because they have no ideas
@@cleanj3ans also an interesting introspect on how the Internet and the general overall notion of games and pop culture in the Internet evolved since Evolution 3. I bet it even changed a little during the game's run, so there might already be shifting trends in the new elements or combinations thereof! (like in symbolism, like how North Korea + Consciousness = South Korea lol)
Same thing with literally any American internet provider. My CenturyLink internet is at most 250kbps and the router restarts multiple times an hour every day.
For whoever is thinking of making another version: It would be nice if we had something to prompt us with "How would you make this element?" The game would hand you a random, already existing element and you would create a new recipe for it If you didn't like that random element, you would just click the button again and it would hand you a new one. Click, click, click, scroll through a nearly endless list of random elements.
Passion projects are... well... for passion, and it's a totally reasonable and understandable thing to abandon or discontinue them. I can't imagine how many times I've just stopped working on something because I lost interest. Everyone has. Your videos are awesome, regardless of what they're about, and the people pressuring you with the "X days since" crap are being unreasonable.
I'm afraid that I used to be in that crowd. I have a much better understanding on these things work now (and a general better understanding of people) to understand that I was being childish
Thanks for understanding, Save the Marsh... Yeah, sometimes it's difficult to gauge what is reasonable or unreasonable on the internet, where the most extreme voices shout the loudest. I'm realizing that yeah, a free Flash-game that caused website issues? Probably okay to become a thing of the past! (Also because Flash is dying in December but that's another story.) In the past, I became nervous because I'd see video game companies promising some really amazing games with all these features, and then fail to deliver, and get SOOOO much backlash. But it's a slightly different situation if money/corporations/press releases/official legally-binding contracts are involved. Elemental 3 had none of that, so I shouldn't feel like I have to follow the same rules. Like you said, it's just a passion project!
i remember trying to brute force the creation of my First person shooter, i finished but i had no more passion for it when i was making it. it’s okay to give up, as long as you tried in the first place

When Elemental 3 came out at that time, I was a twelve-year-old middle schooler who happens to be a real nerd at that time and I usually come home to make elements despite the unimaginable lag. Good times we have here!

this actually gave me a really weird idea what if 2d survival game but the users decide all craftable items and all recipies in a similar way maybe even being able to vote to change tool stats for self balancing!!

I found this channel because of the marble race, and id love to see more of that, but I also stayed because of your personality and that pretty much everything you do is interesting and cool. If you felt like you had to stay on the same topics or couldn't work on what you wanted then your channel would not be nearly as amazing as it is.
This so much. I came because of the evolution vides/machine learning stuff but everything that cary has releases has been super interesting and good, and hes become one of my favorite youtubers no matter what he does.
I think if you or anyone else starts work on an Elemental 4, there needs to be a mechanic to reward players for making redundant recipes, and possibly a way to vote down existing elements to prevent dead memes being in the game for eternity (maybe a simple thumbs reaction to the result, or just track how often the element is made by players and discard it when the count is in single figures per month).
Removing elements kinda loses part of the charm- those little chains that end up turning into conversations and such. I'd say maybe have a mechanic where one recipe can create multiple elements, or combining 3 or more elements? So if someone wanted to avoid a chain they might combine the original 2 elements and "it's time to stop" or something.

I'd love to play something like this just as singleplayer, making everything up myself. And then maybe the whole collection of my own design is weighed against everyone else's for what they did or did not do similarly. Frankly, I don't think a recipe should have been permanently set in stone once made, there should have been a way to update recipes after more suitable options become available.
@@braianpita6385 Well, no. There are two ways to circumvent that problem I can think of right now. Solution 1: Assume originally "a + a = b" and "a + b = c" The first recipe gets changed to "a + a = d". Now the game could still treat the outcome of "a+a" as the same element id-wise therefore changing "a + b = c" to "a + d = c". If this doesn't make sense, the players could vote to change the recipe. This does however introduce new problems like what to do with elements that have multiple recipes to create them? Well, that's why there is Solution 2: Assume originally the existence of elements "a", "b" and "c". Also these recipes: "a + a = b" and "a + b = c". The first recipe gets changed to "a + a = d". There now exist 4 elements "a", "b", "c" and "d" and the second recipe stays the same. This means you can preserve recipes and elements without having to make the recipes permanent. Useless elements can also be essentially removed by making them uncraftable. This would also make these elements rare as there would be no way to obtain them unless a new recipe gets made that contains them. (the following is just rambling about possibilities solution 2 creates) You could also have a list of all existing elements without corresponding recipes to obtain them, so players could think of new recipes to get them more easily. The possibility of scarce elements would also make trade more useful. If you need a scarce or complicated element you could trade it for other elements with other players. You could also make it so changing a recipe needs increasingly more votes. Creating a new element could need more votes than creating a new recipe for existing elements (so that we get a denser graph). And lastly, the amount of votes needed to add a new element could increase with every element to encourage changing recipes in favor of just creating new elements. Really, making recipes non-permanent is a great way to come up with more fun and flexible gameplay.
Is there a way you can re-upload Elemental 3 in its final, 27,225 Element state, without the community support anymore? So it is essentially a massive version of Doodle God. No new elements, just the metric ton of ones created before the server went down. I know I would play a version like that for hours just to get maybe 10%of elements. Thanks!
your usage of the word "equation" for mixing elements gave me an idea: What if there was a game like this that allowed subtraction, multiplication, and division? Could add an interesting layer to the gameplay by making more than one way to combine the same pair of elements. For the basic ones, dividing and subtracting wouldn't do anything but imagine smth like "add earth to air to make dust, multiply air BY earth to make a sandstorm" - you could even get away with having a fewer total number of elements because part of the puzzle would be figuring out what METHOD of combining two elements is needed. Could also add the layer of triple combinations to that - Sandstorm + Fire - Air could be a way to make a "fire storm," a real phenomenon that is basically a wild fire that has gone out of control.
There's no reason for it to not come back! Maybe we can remake it on github, and gather a community of random coders! Well no, that sounds harder and sketchier every second I think about it...
maybe it would be helpful not just to incentivize redundant equations, but also to remove elements that are the terminal node of their branch for a certain period of time (i.e. if an element is not used to make a new element after 12 hours or so then it gets removed). in my mind it would be sort of like the elements are evolving and the best ones produce new elements whereas the ones that don't "die" with no relations

I found this channel because of the marble race, and id love to see more of that, but I also stayed because of your personality and that pretty much everything you do is interesting and cool. If you felt like you had to stay on the same topics or couldn't work on what you wanted then your channel would not be nearly as amazing as it is.
This so much. I came because of the evolution vides/machine learning stuff but everything that cary has releases has been super interesting and good, and hes become one of my favorite youtubers no matter what he does.

Technically, it should be obsidian frame, and then you could do obsidian frame + fire = nether portal.
I think if you or anyone else starts work on an Elemental 4, there needs to be a mechanic to reward players for making redundant recipes, and possibly a way to vote down existing elements to prevent dead memes being in the game for eternity (maybe a simple thumbs reaction to the result, or just track how often the element is made by players and discard it when the count is in single figures per month).
Removing elements kinda loses part of the charm- those little chains that end up turning into conversations and such. I'd say maybe have a mechanic where one recipe can create multiple elements, or combining 3 or more elements? So if someone wanted to avoid a chain they might combine the original 2 elements and "it's time to stop" or something.

Thanks, pvic! Yeah, I was inspired to make this video when I realized, I had a lot of funny memories while playing Elemental 3 (like Bazinga's Sky-or-bust campaign) that I didn't want to vanish into thin air, so this video was my way of commemorating it forever!

I'd love to play something like this just as singleplayer, making everything up myself. And then maybe the whole collection of my own design is weighed against everyone else's for what they did or did not do similarly.
Frankly, I don't think a recipe should have been permanently set in stone once made, there should have been a way to update recipes after more suitable options become available.

There are two ways to circumvent that problem I can think of right now.
Solution 1:
Assume originally "a + a = b" and "a + b = c"
The first recipe gets changed to "a + a = d".
Now the game could still treat the outcome of "a+a" as the same element id-wise therefore changing "a + b = c" to "a + d = c".
If this doesn't make sense, the players could vote to change the recipe.
This does however introduce new problems like what to do with elements that have multiple recipes to create them?
Well, that's why there is Solution 2:
Assume originally the existence of elements "a", "b" and "c". Also these recipes: "a + a = b" and "a + b = c".
The first recipe gets changed to "a + a = d". There now exist 4 elements "a", "b", "c" and "d" and the second recipe stays the same.
This means you can preserve recipes and elements without having to make the recipes permanent.
Useless elements can also be essentially removed by making them uncraftable.
This would also make these elements rare as there would be no way to obtain them unless a new recipe gets made that contains them.
(the following is just rambling about possibilities solution 2 creates)
You could also have a list of all existing elements without corresponding recipes to obtain them, so players could think of new recipes to get them more easily.
The possibility of scarce elements would also make trade more useful. If you need a scarce or complicated element you could trade it for other elements with other players.
You could also make it so changing a recipe needs increasingly more votes.
Creating a new element could need more votes than creating a new recipe for existing elements (so that we get a denser graph).
And lastly, the amount of votes needed to add a new element could increase with every element to encourage changing recipes in favor of just creating new elements.
Really, making recipes non-permanent is a great way to come up with more fun and flexible gameplay.
I guess this would work but all new elements shall be from a certain dictionary. (That's, if there's any good open dictionary available.)
I want singleplayer Elemental 3.
Is there a way you can re-upload Elemental 3 in its final, 27,225 Element state, without the community support anymore? So it is essentially a massive version of Doodle God. No new elements, just the metric ton of ones created before the server went down. I know I would play a version like that for hours just to get maybe 10%of elements. Thanks!

your usage of the word "equation" for mixing elements gave me an idea:
What if there was a game like this that allowed subtraction, multiplication, and division? Could add an interesting layer to the gameplay by making more than one way to combine the same pair of elements. For the basic ones, dividing and subtracting wouldn't do anything but imagine smth like "add earth to air to make dust, multiply air BY earth to make a sandstorm" - you could even get away with having a fewer total number of elements because part of the puzzle would be figuring out what METHOD of combining two elements is needed. Could also add the layer of triple combinations to that - Sandstorm + Fire - Air could be a way to make a "fire storm," a real phenomenon that is basically a wild fire that has gone out of control.

maybe it would be helpful not just to incentivize redundant equations, but also to remove elements that are the terminal node of their branch for a certain period of time (i.e. if an element is not used to make a new element after 12 hours or so then it gets removed). in my mind it would be sort of like the elements are evolving and the best ones produce new elements whereas the ones that don't "die" with no relations
