    I have a Red Stripe that arrived with some not fully functioning controls from CME (never buying from them again). However it's currently being fixed by amp legend Howard Kaplan. I can't wait to get it back and be able to fully utilize this monster.

    Hey man I am watching your mark IIc+ III and IV videos. But it seems that the recording settings and process were different for each video. Any chance you make a comparison between them? Using same speakers, mic, same mic placement, guitar etc?

    I have the same amp , blue stripe it's really bright. You should just swap preamp tubes which can darken and smoothe the highs and also run the presence low

      Hi
      What preamp tubes you recommend? I have blue stripe couple days and think about tubes replace.

      I know this is an old post, but I wanted to put this here for anyone reading this currently.
      I have a blue stripe, bought it used, and just played whatever tubes it had in there until I noticed some tone loss. I retubed everything with all mesa tubes this year.
      Previously, it had STR440 power tubes and an assortment of non-Mesa preamp tubes. There were mostly Russian preamp tubes, and some didn't even have a label.
      I put in the current production red base power tubes, which are TAD rebranded by Mesa. I put it back to the stock 6L6/EL34 combo, and put in the SPAX7 in V1, as I always do for my Mark amps, and the rest were just standard Mesa 12AX7, but I had some spares laying around, so those tubes could be over a decade old by now. I just bought a bunch back in the day for when preamp tubes would fail, so they may not be the same as current production preamp tubes, but they're probably fine.
      With the old tubes, I ran the presence around 2-2.5, and it sounded great. Now, with the new set, I had to run presence up to about 4 to get the same level of perceived brightness.
      I don't know if that's from the preamp tubes, the power tubes, or both, but I know that running with the combination of 6L6/EL34 should do something to the mids and make it seem more smooth. It also sounds like it has more gain, but that could also just be perceived gain from certain frequencies being more focused.
      I can vouch for the red base power tubes, which I believe are relatively new for Mesa. I like the way they sound. I haven't had to buy power tubes since before Covid, and I always liked the STR440 tubes. I never had the opportunity to play the old STR415, which seemed to be the gold standard, but they're too rare and expensive.
      The red base tubes are rated for higher plate voltage, which was occasionally an issue for the old transformers. The voltages they pull could be somewhat inconsistent from amp to amp, sometimes exceeding 500 volts, where something closer to 450 is ideal. If you have old Boogies, the red base tubes are a good option for higher voltages.

    I own a Mark IIC+ what’s the difference between it and the Mark III?

    • @leventgasgil
      @leventgasgil 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The difference in terms of features is mainly the rhythm 2 channel. The voicing of the lead channel is also slightly different but depends on the version or stripe. I hear the earliest Mk III's (no/black stripe) had the same circuit and transformers as the IIC+.

    Great amp. Is it a simul class or a 60 w amp?

    • @ian7208
      @ian7208 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      it's probably one of the older simul-class ones since it has a full power/ 1/2 power switch. this is a mislabeled simul / class A toggle.

    What was the presence on? Sounds as if it was on quite high.

    • @dan_perry
      @dan_perry 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, it needs to be around 5 or below depending on tubes and the guitar.

    • @403woak
      @403woak 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I like presence at about 3, otherwise it is too fizzy with HSS strats. If I use an LP, I could dial presence closer to 5, but it is easier to just pull the bright and/or push the bass shift knobs. Also, I set lead gain very high at about 8. If I lowered lead gain, the presence could stand to go higher. M-III red stripe.

      Oh I dunno, Splawns sound pretty fucking awesome in drop A. That's WAY the fuck down. Drop tuning has more to do with the right pickup and speaker choice than anything else to be completely honest. Strings and pick as well.

    • @jsullivan2112
      @jsullivan2112 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Turboy65 It's definitely the amp, Marks are not as well suited to lower tunings as other amps like Soldanos or EVHs are. Even my 70s Hiwatt sounds better in C than my Mark IV does. When you get down to the two lowest strings Marks have this really throaty quality that just does not suit the tuning at all. This is definitely where the Rectos easily overtake the Marks, even though Marks kick their ass in every other way.
