That's about 12 megabytes a second. :)
That was download, but what were the upload rates?
I have a brand new Rhino Rack Back Bone system with the rack still in the box that I bought off of Trail Recons Site for my Gladiator. I can't use it because of the rack on my shell. I'd be willing to let it go pretty cheap. I'm in South East Arizona
Great video. I just ordered the Mini and can't wait to try it
So where are you located? You make it seem like you can just buy the mini and set up and go. If you are in the US, until it’s changed, you need to already have StarLink residential in order to even buy the mini and then you are data capped to 50 GB and the service can’t be paused so for someone who doesn’t know anything about the mini this video is misleading. Also do an advanced speed test so we can see the actual speed from the device to the satellites.
From what I understand, this is how they are handling the early phase of this product rollout. They are capping it as they increase production. This is also a product they are targeting for developing countries as a low cost alternative. The greater freedom for who can buy it will come as they increase the saturation of satellites for the density of the US customers. They already are having saturation issues in certain areas that limit speeds, which is why residential is marketed as non-mobile so they can track saturation.
I have Gen2 and worked remotely for 3.5 months on it. IT WAS AMAZING. This new one is great to simplify the whole process.
A whole video about the Jeep setup. Yes please
Yeah please, I want to know about that rooftop tent
Did you run additional tests for upload? As you tested?
What battery do you recommend for plugging the mini into?
I have Starlink for my business and never looked back...fantastic speeds, never dropped out..recommend for all...!
Nice, thanks for this!
Great Presentation.
Question:
This video was exactly 10:00 minutes long.
If you’d use your specific upload settings for this video, uploading using the StarLink Mini connection, how long would it take ?
Secondly, how much of a difference, compared to your regular high speed connection at home, do you register ?
Can you tell me about uploading video to you tube? Do you find the 50 cap hinders you at all? Thank you.
how much your monthly payment for that internet? including the device?
What would be your total costs monthly? Including the device, plans, and what happens at data cap?
How much does the full kit weigh? (wondering about the hiking aspect).
Cool video. Thank you!
With the wifi built directly into the dish, am just worried about the heat the whole thing is going to take...i mean wont the heat affect the short and long term life span and speed of the thing?
In motion use?
Great vid and thank you for taking the time to break it down for us. I work a 9-5 remote job while out on adventure travel. When you get around to wiring it into your aux batt not using AC I would love to see that. Trying to get around using an inverter and wire direct into my 12v system. By the way love your Jeep and would like to see your office setup. Always looking for new ideas for remote work from my Gladiator.
The 50GB limit before throttling starts is a deal killer for me.
Would you be using it as your only means of wifi access?
How much do you need for a few days of camping?
Internet should be unlimited for individuals
@@vitaminb4869 A few days of camping? I am a fulltime filmaker and work remotely.
Where did you hear that
Unrelated. How do you like your camper. I have a gladiator I’m thinking about getting one.
I would only use it if I need it for work. Otherwise one of the best parts of going camping is you're disconnecting from internet and social media. It's such a nice break to have.
Awesome! I have a Gen 2 on the House - It's mobile but much larger. Good to see a smaller version!
My Starlink Gen 2 has been a game changer up at my cabin in the middle of nowhere. Dreamt about having a mini 2 years ago when it was only rumored.
Fun video! Would definitely like to see more about your jeep setup as I am running a very similar rig and aspire to occasionally use it as a mobile office... to get out of the house or work days. It looked like you were using some sort of director's chair to be able to sit and use the rear platform of the alucab? Would like to know more about that!
Another fantastic video and one that is very relevant to my lifestyle so thanks a million! I too am a digital content creator and spend a great deal of time off road. My question is, have you done any tests on actually trying to upload video to a Vimeo or TH-cam? It seems like it might not be practical, but curious if you have tried.
I guess something to save for 🙂
I like the small form factor, great for my van.... but not sure if I would take it on a multi day backpacking trip... sometimes is is nice to be offline.
Cheers from LA
Can you mount this on the roof of a vehicle then not have to keep setting up?
Excellent video! Nice to have more overland content in your videos....please test in-motion performance, as you know this is not a Starlink-supported feature for the mini dish, but it works with a Gen3 dish even with a residential plan, so it will work with the mini dish. I have my Bronco Badlands ready to install a Gen 3 dish on the roof, but I will wait for the Mini performance to decide.
That’s one hell of a creator cameo.
😜
Is this on the starlink website already? Because I don't see it on there ,no where does it say the new mini starlink🤷♂️
How much power does it use? Thanks
40 to 60 Watts
Does anyone have an idea for how one could power this while backpacking? I work from home and would love to send email from on top of a mountain, but don't think my solar panel could power this. Any thoughts?
Nice video, great tech. 😊
Test it backpacking middle of no where how will you power it
Great video brother! Keep us posted. BTW, looks like you've lost weigh, way to go. 🤙🏼
StarLink rocks - extremely cool
When using Starlink outdoors, have you ever felt any inconvenience during the assembly process? Would you need any accessories that could make it easier to install it on your jeep?
Thanks for the review.
Do you think having it static on the roof would work or does it need to be aligned every time?
It has to be aligned each time
If you don't have cell service in the first place, how can you open the starlink apps and set it up for the first time? I guess the apps should connect to starlink website to do its thing
as a person who travels in remote aus and soemtimes on a motorbike this is a game changer
i do have a main starlink that i have taken in my ute
but this is truly perfect for portable outback internet
Do we know if we have to pay another plan for the Mini? or can I stop the connection at the house and use it on the Mini. Currently I just take the dish off my roof but this would be great for when I go camping
It's an additional $30 a month on top of what you already pay for home Starlink.@lachlan.mooney
@@lachlan.mooney That's the exact same question that I was thinking. Would really love to know the answer.
@@lachlan.mooneymust be linked to a current residential starlink account at the current moment $30 added
Do you have to align it every time? Or is it just during the first set up? Because then I don’t know if I could have it hard mounted if it has to be aligned each time
you could hard mount it, but put it in a reachable place, so you can quickly align it. Once you move it won't connect.
Great video, as Desert Charley I think I'm going to get one. (Production note... please limit your swaying left right selfie views because I had to look away for motion sickness... gah) Looking forward to more of your adventures.
I would need this for going live on tiktok from the boat and from remote fishing locations too. I will wait to see for sure if it will work for my purposes though.
Sounds great! Easy! In my overland car camping world I leave all that behind on purpose. But I know many of you are full time content creators and cannot be disconnected.
That is so nice. Prepping for a 2 year overlanding/dispersed camping trip out west: New Mexico, Utah, Arizona, Nevada, Colorado, Wyoming, and Montana.
Although, it doesn't look like this will be available for anyone in the US for a while. Hopefully by March 2025--that's when all my fun begins. Subscribed. Looks like you have great content I can use. thanks.
I've been using Starlink's "standard" roam kit for camping. It's kind of a pain to setup with the large power supply, separate wifi box, and then the large antenna. I'm actually selling it now and going to buy the mini. So much more convenient. Since this is just for camping 50GB limit is not a problem for me.
Look up starmount systems, you will like it
You still need a residential starlink account unfortunately to link it too
This is quite amazing...so won't the satellite dish thing is purchased, is there a subscription fee to use Starlink? Thanks. Love your Jeep homebase set up!
Yes, you need a subscription. In fact, I think the mini is currently only an add-on to existing plans. Hope that changes soon.
Thanks!
If you've never had Starlink, how did you get the invite to purchase one? Right now they are only offered to selected existing Starlink residential users as an add-on dish.
We didn’t need an invite we just went to the website and used the link. Hope this helps.
@@Cve979 I'm sorry but no that didn't help. It is not available for sale to new starlink customers in the US. Only in selected Latin American countries. It is in fact one of the major complaints of the new dish. If you have a link where this happens, can you provide it? Because this is contrary to literally every other person's experience wanting to get Starlink Mini in the US.
Are you going to post /add overlanding type adventures to this channel?
OTR Driver here, needing a 24/7 mounted in motion solution. I like the size vs bigger options but mountable and in motion are required here. If those work, I might jump on board.
Will this be available stand alone or will you need to have residential to get it?
Not yet. You currently need to have an existing plan and then add the Mini Roam plan. Hope it goes standalone soon though
Obviously one would expect it to work in the kind of WIDE OPEN spaces you used for testing. The big question for me is how does it work with varying degrees of limited views of the sky. Very little info on YT that I can find which shows that kind of test.
Im think using mini for camping was wondering how it would do for streaming tv?
@@dangehring7495 seems fine. I did a 45 min zoom call on it and watched some TH-cam videos today no problem
Should be noted, you are getting mega BITS per second. At around 5:20 you say mega BYTES. There is a pretty big difference, but doesn't diminish the service, since we always measure in megaBITS.
Haha, he wish he got that many megabytes. Nonetheless, it's still faster than my home internet, which is already plenty fast. You really don't need 130 mbps down.
He corrected himself on the pinned comment
@@vitaminb4869 dunno. For a single connection I’d agree. For a home using many devices I’d say more is better.
What are those sunglasses that you are using? Thanks!
They're called Ombraz: geni.us/dFlWUC
It seems like this could be plug directly to the 12V setup (fused)... Without an AC to DC adapter this should be very efficient and could be a nice permanent solution for overlanding, maybe a simple bracket that allow it to pivot and rotate would be a great addition.
Love the format and looking forward to the Jeep tour. Super useful tool! Hoping that not to many hikers/backpackers will use this on the trails. Unplugging is a good thing. Thanks for the great video man!
Can you see if there’s a way to power this over USB-C?
Good question!
So, is it possible to carry on the dish in a backpack and take a walk without loosing the connection?
I tried and it didn’t work well. Maybe a hat with it on top would be better 😂
It might be hard given your local conditions but how about a test in the rain? Heavy cloud cover?
This thing needs be available to everyone at half the price and have a cheaper monthly plan or even better a daily plan.
forget starlink.... I want that jeep!! PS.... Starlink is amazing. I use it in my RV while in the Maine woods.
Does it work at all from INSIDE the tent, or on the dash, under the windshield? Can you run a speed test?
Watch my follow up video where I test this th-cam.com/video/7uHSmgcBLwY/w-d-xo.htmlsi=kg2AeNFjUceN5v1-
Very informative. The only problem now is I'm seasick from all the motion of the camera
Consegue me vender ela? Quero comprar uma mais aqui no Brazil não podem vender me faz a quanto ela?
You just sold me. Fine info.
why no speed test on the trails ? :D
do you need to use wifi or can you use ethernet directly from this device
You can use either net
@@JevenDovey can you shut off wifi if you are using ethernet, for my work i need to silence all wireless signals for sensitive rf frequency work, allowed to only use ethernet; so it would be great if they gave me an option to turn wifi off if im using ethernet
cuanto es la mensualidad
MORE PLEASE .. Just asking for a friend 🤣
Pls test it in motion, does it work while you are driving!
no
If you never had Starlink, how did you get the mini-dish
It’s advertised as available only to those with an existing residential account.
As an influencer, is Starlink giving you the hardware for free for a favorable review?
I’m not a Starlink hater, I have a dish on my home and getting the mini tomorrow.
Just want to know the angle.
What glasses are you wearing?
Ombraz link in description
It not working in motion would be a deal breaker, as I’d want it while driving in remote areas for maps and such. Also 600wh/day is a lot. Think I’ll wait and see, especially given it’s monthly cost.
600 Wh/day would be with it on 24/7. You can use it much less. At a minimum turning it off while sleeping knocks you down to 400 Wh/day. Using it half the waking hours is down to 200 Wh/day. We have used the larger more power hungry starlink on a boat and it works great just turn it off when not using it. Have to use Priority Data when "offshore" but within a few miles of the shore SpaceX considers it "land" so basic roam service works fine.
That's a helpful comment for me, thanks.@@namechamps
Buy the bigger one
What are those sunglasses? Very nice. Would love to get one of those
They’re called Ombraz geni.us/dFlWUC
Very very cool
I have the RV version but the mini would be a game changer. There are many times I can’t bring the RV version because it is too bulky.
Nice
You could also mount a standard Starlink antenna to the roof of your truck, that way you can have internet while driving. I don't think the mini supports a mobile connection.
Please test this while in motion. If it doesn’t work in motion that’s a deal breaker for me. I thought it would be 12v compatible. 40-60 is still a lot of juice. Not much less than my hi performance dish.
It will not work in motion, it would have to be motorized
@@johnmrh9426 No it wouldn't.
@@moki123g Well then tell me how it would work
@@johnmrh9426 The panel is what is called a phased array antenna. It uses hundreds of transmitters and receivers and electronically steer the transmit beam to the satellite. Starlink seems to like to be pointed more or less north for optimum reception, but as long as it can see the sky it will work. Whether it works under motion we don't know yet but, there is no reason that it can't work. If they allow or not is up to them.
Well, how much did it cost?
599 for the panel and 30 a month for service. Its an add on for residential right now. th-cam.com/video/7uHSmgcBLwY/w-d-xo.html
@@JevenDovey oh that would be great if it was just 30 bucks a month. Without any add-ons.
Nice introductory review. I am interested in detailed idle and up/download DC power usage to better estimate required solar panel and battery capacity for offgrid camping use. I suspect idle power will be in 20 watt range. Ok for short term use but for 24/7 connectivity Iridium sat based internet hotspot may be better choice. But if you need google map while out of cell coverage then this can't be beat. Edit: another video shows 40w bootup, ~25w active and 12.5w idle DC power usage at 13.2v. Not bad!
Link vídeo please 🙏🏼
I had insane speeds when I was in Baja.
Wow, awesome and good for the travellers
I wanna buy mini.
Try to look for some 3d printed gadgets
Sailors rejoice!!
Not "mega bytes per second", is "mega bits per second", one byte equals 8 bits. Data speed is measured in bits in 99% of various cases. (Only the hard drive transfer rate uses bytes.)
Link to the sunglasses?
Here you go geni.us/dFlWUC
It's time for cellphone companies to partner with Elon to incorporate GSM repeater functionalities into these devices. Then they will be in big business.
Overstating is rough. From the vid - 120Mbps down - 7Mbps up.
Need to test how far away from the starlink mini you can be and still get signal.
Mine is over 100' so far
Nicely done. (My full comment is gone, I suspect that TH-cam killed it. Not sure why. I posted a link to the forest service website that lists road closures 🤷🏼♂)

The mini is $600 and you have to add it to a current $120 residential plan, for $30 extra per month. So the cost is $150 per month right now in the US. Cheaper in Central America.
It's good anuff for Ukraine they been using it for last years testing real Field test
Great video! Starlink is a game changer for remote working. We don't have the mini yet in the UK, but I have just flat mounted the Gen 3 to my campervan/rv with the Trio FlatMount - video on my channel for the install, speeds etc. Currently using the EcoFlow Delta 2 to power it.
