It's blown up shoreside, nobody on the boat cared. I bought the ship WiFi too, so this did not hurt their bottom line, case in point, I'm not the bad guy here but have a microphone to show who is and I'm using that microphone! Very soon ANY cell phone will do this, and their monopoly will have competition!

The phased array technology in Starlink antennas, especially in the compact “mini” model, is designed to dynamically adjust its directional beams to align with the satellite's position, which could be almost anywhere in the sky given Starlink’s satellite coverage. So while it might look like it's facing towards the ship, the real action happens through its sophisticated signal discrimination, focusing its reception towards the satellite it’s connected to-likely from the open sky area around the balcony.
I'm a multi-service licensed radio user if that means anything. :)

I think I would have tried pointing the antenna off the balcony. Starlink is a constellation with satellites all over the sky. It may say "hey, I said north", but still work. Be interesting to see if it works. There should be satellites that direction. Even if you have to point it north so it can figure our where it is, once it has a lock, it would be interesting to turn it out to see if it gets better signal strength, and therefore speed.

From Carnival’s ban list “Satellite disk, routers and other internet related equipment” (whatever is a satellite disk). I understand that they already have the same equipment onboard and that it isn’t using any technology that doesn’t already exist in a phone, but the cruise line wants the money and control that comes from monopolizing access to the internet. I think there is an implication that if you are trying to find a way around their control, it is because you want to do something nefarious, not just save money. Plus, if you want to build your bridge, you are going to need some “other internet related equipment.”

    • @NoPantsProfits

Just thinking out loud here, but is it possible your antenna is connecting to the next closest satellite, South bound? I would think it is impossible the signal can penetrate through the ship. The app tells you to point North because that's where the closest satellite is, but after a certain amount of time when it doesn't connect, maybe it connects to the next closest available, which in your room would be South. I would be curious if the speeds would be better if you ignored the app and pointed the antenna South, that may confirm it if speeds improve.

You don't need to point it north, there are satellites everywhere in the sky. Point it towards clear sky if northern sky has metal obstruction (glass, wood does not seem to be a problem).
In the video it works because it has roughly 100 degree of view so it had some view out to the southern sky where there are satellites.

They will tell us some BS that it has to do with safety blah blah blah. Second, Starlink may not allow this if cruise ships dont ban their use. If i recall correctly, you can use the mini if you have the roam plan up to 12 miles into the ocean. After 12 miles you need to have a much MUCH more expensive plan that they have for people with Yachts. Its a few hundred a month and not for unlimited data. So there you have it. again, awesome video- thank you for making it; but enjoy while you can because as sure as i am writing this, im that sure it will be banned by the cruise lines in the near future as more and more people buy the mini. Hi there, I'm planning to go on a cruise, this is my first time going and I found that using the ship internet service cost a bomb. So I thought of using Starlink and I saw your youtube, this is amazing ! But so sad you also got it confiscated. As I am thinking which cruises disallow to bring Starlink aborad ? And how do you make it work thoughout the entire ship to use your own Starlink ? Thank you for your help.
