California is a difficult state but the lifestyle and everything in Georgia is totally different. I don't think you guys won't like the change. Moving from the West Coast to the East Coast is hard. I live in Florida and don't like it. I lived in Arizona and loved it. It's, it's a totally different world on this side of the country.
I've met many folks this year who've moved to NC from CA, and they were able to sell their home in CA, and pay off their home here in NC due to the cost difference.
Then they bring their politics and mess up another state. They create the very thing they’re trying to escape. It’s the same thing with the illegals. Escape the 3rd world, only to create another one.
Foster to adopt? Just equals money from the state to equal what he was making in California. He’s not interested in freaking kids! He wants money! Children do not belong with him that’s for sure! He low-key sounds like he’s ready to go postal! LBVS.
You didn't know that's what fostering has become? Speak to your local DA on foster kids who commit auto thefts cause the foster parents could care less. People don't care, but shocking whenever you remove morals and values from society. Wow. Shocking. Wow. Wow. Maybe vote harder next time?
I'm 31 now but I've often thought about fostering or foster to adopt in the future. Especially older kids! They need love too! People forget about them. Perhaps once I'm in my 40's and have my own home by then. I've never been interested in pregnancy but I love kids. My mom was sadly raised in several different foster homes. I'd even foster if it meant no assistance money, it just saddens me how many kids are currently in our system waiting for good homes.

Happiness in life is what matters. If you make less money but you are happy and can pay your bills then who cares?? Live your life while you have it. It is extremely short.
Josh needs to transfer to Georgia alone. Stay for a year and see if it really is what you want. You can fly home once a month. And while the pay will probably be 50% less, taxes are less, congestion (at least outside of Atlanta) is less, but ... the humidity is a beast in summer. Be prepared.
Come on man! It’s Sacramento! Of course it sucks! Come down to the Central Coast. Tons of nursing jobs, perfect weather and I’m sure you have enough equity to purchase a small house around here.
Why would a couple decide to “FOSTER” a child under an already BAD situation? Spare a child’s exposure to your problems. Fostering is a very demanding and stressful commitment. You are not the man to do this charitable endeavor. Don’t drag unsuspecting victims into your unhappy life.
California taxes are high! Move to Nebraska! Our property taxes are nearly $5,000 a year for a $300,000 home. We bought a new truck, taxes on that were $5,000. Nebraska is the tax me state!
Try buying a house, gas for your car, groceries, utilities in California. You have ZERO perspective. Or come to MN and get bent over on income tax and sales tax.
@garagehobbies The problem is that none of those states are well run. Both OR and WA have major freeway problems. The states don't widen their freeways, and traffic has insane choke points in both states.
California isn’t cheap and has its problems but he’s stayed 17 years? He’s not going to suddenly become happy in another state. I know too many people who have moved thinking that would happen and they’re usually trying to get back within a couple years.
His house is probably way more expensive than other places in the country. If he moves, he could probably pay cash for his next house in a cheaper area.
Yes. He said that he's only 4 years from having his house paid off. Which means he probably has massive equity. He could sell it and pay cash for a house somewhere else and still have a bunch left over.
i live in CA, hopefully one day ill move. but i understand that taking a paycut would be worth it. ive looked at other states and see how much lower taxes are, cost of living, gas, car registration, etc. people are under the illusion in CA that having that high dollar is that great when so much of our paychecks go to taxes and the crazy costs of stuff here
Ok, Im putting two and two together here. He says he is a federal government employee (at the beginning). Later alludes to doing travel agency work. He is a GSA employee. There is no reason he cannot stay w GSA in a different position. And most if not all of this kind of work is done remotely. To keep his marriage, and if they agree to leave California, he should let his wife pick where to move to. They each can work wherever.
He sounds like he's the problem. The fact that he seems to have gotten himself into a situation where he has to get out yesterday, is saying something! And pushing the move to somewhere his wife hates...!!! He's almost retired, house almost paid. Dude shut up, get a hobby, and find gratitude!
Leaving family is not a good idea. I know, I moved across Canada and regret it. Do not leave family. You have 7 more years, suck it up or get a new job.
I feel where he’s coming from. It can be soul-crushing if the environment you’re in day in and day out is toxic. You can have gratitude for the good things in your life and still want to live and work in a place more in line with your core values. Sometimes you wind up in a place temporarily that is an energy suck because of things that are out of your control. Sometimes it’s in your control and just due to bad decisions. Either way, wanting to change it doesn’t necessarily mean he’s an ungrateful complainer. It just means he needs to make some decisions (and maybe some sacrifices) to change the situation if it’s important to him.
Just get a new job. For $90 an hour, I would not move. The wife will not lose her 401k. Will cost of living be 66% lover? Sounds like the problem is his job. And not really California.
LOL this caller annoyed me in the first minute of hearing hime rant. Stop blaming a state for your unhappiness and change what you can with consideration to your wife.
I took it to mean he works for the federal government but he was talking so fast i may have missed it. If federal it doesn't matter where he lives. Depending where he lives in california and where he moves to in georgia, he will take a pay cut due to the cost of living adjustment which will ultimately affect his high 3 and thus his pension but it probably won't be major difference.
He likely got in trouble for not referring to a co-worker as “they/them,” cause he speaks so fast, it sounded like “ze/zi.” When he tried to explain it to HR, he kept making the same mistake because he was speaking too quickly.
California is truly and awful state to live in, there are parts of it that are like a 3rd world country. But people want to stay because of the weather. The people that cite the weather in most cases, spend the vast majority of their lives indoors. Climate control exists and is way cheaper than living in California.
His lifestyle doesn’t let him leave. He can’t take his and his wife’s high paying (salaried) wages here to another state which will charge you less. The cost of housing has gone up but fortunately we purchased a home 20 years ago. We max out our 401 K plans, HSA and contribute to 529 plans. Being able to work from home and cutting my hours in half helped with my work life balance. My vacation also increased to 8 weeks off per year from 6 weeks. I also get 10 holidays and 16 sick days per year. I have 401 K matching and a pension. Hoping to retire at age 60 with $5-6 million if possible. I will probably buy a place in Hawaii at that point near my relatives and keep my house in San Francisco.

Sell it after a year and buy a house of your choice in Georgia. I’m a Southerner that’s lived in CA for decades. I hate it until I visit “back home” and can’t wait to get back “home” to California.
Starting pay for a nurse in Georgia is about $30/hr. Experienced nurses can earn more, and those in specialized areas can earn even more.

Ok, Im putting two and two together here. He says he is a federal government employee (at the beginning). Later alludes to doing travel agency work. He is a GSA employee. Sometimes you wind up in a place temporarily that is an energy suck because of things that are out of your control. Sometimes it’s in your control and just due to bad decisions.
