I was spending $450 per month on gas with my old Acura MDX. Now I charge at home. I was able to buy the car when the prices dropped and also had the tax credit.

    Hey Rachel…We too are a Tesla Family. We bought both of our Teslas, Model X and Model S, used!! My husband and I are techies and we absolutely love our purchases. I’m also an apple user, phone, computer, Apple TV, headphone etc, and with any technology there is a possibility for glitches BUT guess what those glitches can and do also happen to mechanical engines. Our cars have saved us a lot of money because along with our electric car, we have solar on our roof. So charging our car is all but free. I am an all cash budgeter and the one envelope you will not find in any of my binders/wallet is tune up/oil change & GAS.

I've turned into a bit of an evangelist and tell everyone "All those negative things you have heard about range, power, finding chargers etc - none of the negative comments are true". The electric grid will manage just fine by the way - people are not cooking or drying their laundry at 2am when the cars are charging.

    RACHEL AND ALL! The electric vehicle tax credit does not work out for everyone. First, if you are self-employed, it cannot be applied to your self-employment tax. In my personal situation, 75-80% of our owed tax is SE tax. So, if we owe $10,000 in tax, we would only get to use $2,000-$2,500 of that electric vehicle credit. Also, the credit is "use it or lose it." If you can't use it in one year, you are out of luck. Finally, if you prepaid your taxes, as most do through the year with their employer, you also won't get the credit because it is NON-REFUNDABLE. You are best to buy early in the year and stop your withholding so you can make sure to be able to use the tax credit. I learned these things from my CPA yesterday. You should probably do a follow-up segment to explain this or you may end up with some very upset followers...!

    I've been driving electric only for 11 years, Leaf then model Y, I have been fortunate with no maintenance in those years - except tire rotations & windshield wiper change. Charging at home saves a ton in the long run and is really more convenient. My car was paid off quick by TSLA gains. Under no circumstances would I consider buying a gas car again, If anything being grid independent might be the next thing as costs for power walls come down, to get and use your own power, then no need for power company at all, until then EV electricity costs are negligible compared to what I would have spent on ⛽

I don't try and convince people to buy a BEV, that's a choice i'm not willing to try and force on others but for those of you thinking about it.. I LOVE IT!! (and yes i do really get about 300 miles of range, which takes care of nearly all my driving).

    My parents have had EV cars for about a decade. I borrowed a Nissan Leaf from my dad for several months back in 2017 while I was in school and enjoyed it. But have not taken the leap to EV for myself. I have a Kia Niro hybrid because I have a long commute and at the time I bought my car no EV's had the range that I need. But as the range gets longer and more public charging stations become available I think my next car may be an EV.

    Bought a used 2023 tesla model 3 with 5k miles for 32k, -7500 tax refund, which brought it down to 24500… I used to spend 80 - 100usd / week on gas, now just 15-20 / week on electric bill / supercharger… it’s a budget friendly car with feature of some luxury cars or high trim models such as heated seats (all seats including the back seats), heated steering wheels, preheat / precool prior to driving, power seats for both front seats, self driving option, security camera, etc!!! Majority of “maintenance” are just on tire rotation, which costs around 65usd, with a tech coming to your garage 🤷🏻‍♀️ i dont need to get a faster charger either because my slow charger that comes with the car works just fine, and i just go to a supercharger if it’s not sufficient

    Sorry about your experiences Rachel, for those of us who are car enthusiasts, Tesla is known to actually be one of the least reliable cars. Case in point, in different parts of the world, such as in parts of Asia, Tesla's go for more than half the price compared to the American market. Indicating that they are still profiting at a significant reduction of price. "Quality" and Tesla just really don't go together

      With a gas car you know exactly how far you can go before you run out of gas, and you’re able to refuel in minutes. You don’t need to install a charger in your home, you don’t need to wait for a few public charger. When the power goes out for extended periods you can still drive your car (days on end). You can bank fuel for a power outage in Gerry cans which will last indefinitely. A government or company can’t take over your car.

    • @momlife1123
      @momlife1123 ปีที่แล้ว

      One thing everyone forgets about EV’s is that once the battery stops working (7-10yrs) the entire car is trash.. There is no way to install a new battery. So it’s not any more environmentally friendly since a reliable Toyota or Honda can still be driven for 20-30 years.

    I don’t think that a electric vehicle would do very well for me with the weight of the tools and supplies I have to carry. Also, I definitely would not buy a used one only to have to turn around and buy an expensive new battery for the car.
    It all seems like a great idea for people that already have a gas truck and lots of money to throw around to get an electric car for the savings per mile.

      now that Teslas's have been in mass production for more than 12 years they're finding battery degradation on an older tesla is truly minimal- the battery will probably outlast the vast majority of cars on the road. As it relates to your needs, maybe a BEV isn't right for you today. To each their own!

    My same thoughts that it's like a spaceship! I dig Teslas as a geek, but it's hard for me to still stomach the price. (I hear your dad's car rants replaying in my head lol ;). I was very reluctant in getting one... But folded after my wife persuaded me (or won that battle lol) to get the Model Y LR in 2021, so I say it's "her car." I thought it would be an interesting experiment, but here we are after two years of ownership... We've certainly had our share of malfunctions (spontaneous reboots while driving, door problem, etc). And I was skeptical about how it would fare on an extended road trip with kids, but we've done a few of them (and we don't mind the charging stops for breaks). Tesla is pretty innovative and in terms of performance it's hard to beat... I just wish they had a level of quality on par with a Camry, Accord, or Civic!
