  • We drive the dieselgate VW Golf TDI. It's aright, no great, but not bad. A good commuter. The exhaust doesn't smell.

    I genuinely don't understand US car laws. They will crush an Imported R34 GTR or a 2015 Land Rover Defender for being 'unsafe' however you can drive a 6.9l v8 that has been slapped onto a ladder chassis with drum brakes from 1949 in someones shed and has a bucket for a fuel tank.

      More like time period constraints, like look down the line is see just how far behind the US in standards, laws and regulations compared to most developed nations and even developing one's.
      Although you might consider that the US is one of the most powerful, influential, the most advanced military and the most modern nation with the highest GDP and it is.
      But then you start to see the faults lines and cracks between safety, morals and ethics.
      They will hesitate sacrifice all those thing in order to meet certainly impossible deadlines in construction projects and infrastructure maintenance and to prove to the world, boasting and bragging about it, how they accomplish something that the world hasn't yet to accomplish, how they are better than any other nation, by covering up all the scandals and controversies with subversive and subliminal messages and imagery to blind all of those who oppose the government and blind all of us from the truth and from problems that currently remain within the confines of it's borders.
      The US is it's own worst enemy and it's own worst problematic nightmare.
      There is no such thing as freedom, just lies, greed and deceit.

      I don't think its the flag so much as its the scale of it as well as the perception. How many "illegal" Harley's out there compared to VW Golfs? In addition how powerful is the Harley brand compared to say Apple or Chevrolet? Is it possible nobody talks about Harley because it caters to such a niche market? The reason VW got shit on was because ALOT of people actually give a damn about the brand thus bringing out the news media and trolls to monetize attention to it.

      @JamisonMK3 7 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      reelreeler you also have to consider the MUCH higher impact VW would have. there are probably 30 vw's or more for every Harley(that's a complete guess), and the vw engines with produce much more emissions than even a poorly tuned bike engine. It's partly patriotism, but mostly due to the MUCH higher environmental impact of vw's deception.

      hippyraverocker The V8 is choked by the emissions controls that the small economical diesel quietly ignored. That's why latter-day big block American V-8s made so little power. Meanwhile the emissions from your small economical diesel are about 20x worse than the CO2 coming from the V8.

    • @shroomyesc
      @shroomyesc 6 ปีที่แล้ว +152

      The diesel issue isn't about environmental stuff nature-wise like co2, it's about the carcinogens and toxic gases burning diesel releases. Sure a gas guzzling V8 will speed up that sweet greenhouse effect but at least being next to it won't give me 52 types of cancer.

    Honestly, almost no one in Europe even gives the slightest f*ck about the Dieselgate. They love the TDIs because fuel is expensive and insurances are unaffordable for high horsepower cars. We have this same engine in our Audi A4 and it made 210k kilometers without a hickup. But as you said, VW is a foreign manufacturer, so the US has to give them a hard time :D

    • @DrewLSsix
      @DrewLSsix 7 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Macintoshmani12. the thing is I dont think it has much to do with them being a foreign manufacturer. Yes Harley handled it well and they certainly had the advantage that their customer base likely gave zero fuks, but even then it would have been a juicy story if the had perhaps responded differently.
      VWs actions were covered by every automotive rag and blog probably more thoroughly than the main stream media and in that setting VW has long been a favorite brand, from the GTIs of the last 30 years to the air coold machines and the TDIs them selves.
      I dont think that a bunch of people that have often favored VW over all domestics and often the japanese would be unduly harsh on them out of nationalistic pride all of a sudden.
      VWs indiscretions became a big deal for the same reason Bill Clintons did, both thought they could bullshit us about it with barely any effort and we collectively took offense.

    • @DaBriceisRight
      @DaBriceisRight 7 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      Same here in the states, really. I sell VWs for a living and nobody really cares. I've heard of friends of customers that complain about it, but honestly VW is a repeat customer business that relies on people that already love VWs. I've actually gotten more complaints from people that were upset that they couldn't get a brand new diesel since their diesel got them from El Paso to San Diego on a single tank of fuel (allegedly).
      The only reason people are doing the buyback thing, according to all my customers, is because they're getting $15-$20k for base model cars that are up to 5 years old.

    • @Eric__J
      @Eric__J 7 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      EU emissions testing favors diesels, anyhow. Between being easier to drive (torque) when a manual (almost all cars in Europe), more torque per liter of displacement (great for acceleration and low speed, which is almost everywhere over there), and better fuel economy, diesel cars are an easy sell.

      idontcare80 Sure, but I don't think a car made in 2008 is that much dirtier than a car made in 2015, but we are lead to believe if a car made today doesn't meet 2017 standards it's a coal burning power plant. When it would have been fine 3 years prior.

There was even a test by Motor Trend between a 2005 VW Jetta TDI and a Toyota Prius, in which the Jetta won because it got similar MPG, and still almost zero emissions compared to the Prius. Now come to find out that isn't true. That's the issue--the perpetuation of a line that wasn't accurate.

      No, coal is used worldwide and America isn't the number one energy producer using coal even as a first world country.
      That honor goes to Poland at a whopping 83%!! However if you say Poland isn't good enough for you than try Australia, Israel, Czech Republic, Greece, Germany, and South Korea who all use more coal than the US. Denmark, Japan, and the Netherlands are all in the same ballpark as America using between 30-39% of their energy production through coal.

      no that I dont disagree that the laws are heavy handed and have negatively effected the market, I believe we were very close to diesels become viable in america until DEF became a thing, but it still doesnt change VWs culpability for their actions. the government is not as draconian as you may think. VW could have likely appealed for an acception, this is actually fairly common and they would have had a strong case but they didnt go that route. they also arguably made wrong choices after the story broke.

    I have a 2010 VW JSW TDI Diesel. I bought it end of 2011. It has 100,000 miles. I had the emission mod done, and collected $1000 in good faith money, $5000 in mod money and $350 from Bosh. PLUS I got 40K and 4 year extended warranty on the drive train and engine systems (fuel, emission). KEEPING IT FOREVER... Launch with the torque will put a smile on your face everything. Fit, finish, amendments, handling are all excellent.

    this is the 2.0l TDI not the best engine, specially the ones from the beginning of the production in 2006... The older 1.9l TDI were great engines, and The "TD" were even better, but less powerful.

    • @endroo93

    When I read the title first up until almost the end of the video I thought I´m watching a review of a Golf GTI, which confused me because of the 140 bhp, the very plain look and you not being all that impressed with it. Then it clicked in my mind not just because of all the diesel gate explanation (there is a GTD, which essentially is a diesel GTI).
    Speaking of which, since the diesel gate has been exposed Mercedes, Peugeot and if I remember correctly also Mitsubishi were accused of similar behavior but somehow as you said only VW received all the heat. At least that´s what I read and a car appraiser told me. Here in Germany they just updated most cars or changed something on the diesel filters, most people who were affected aren´t even getting a refund but there are also lawsuits on the way.

    I would bet $ that 2.0 tdi is cleaner than half of the big shitty V8 MOTORS that are still sold today. Screw EPA and FORD for pulling this crap. Diesel is the future and for a daily its a perfect combination .

      What, like the V8s that VW themselves sell in Passat, Phaeton and Touareg (plus Audi models too)? Pot, kettle, black!?

    As a european, I heard about this dieselgate thing but it clearly didn't affect us as much as you guys. It's pretty crazy to scrap a car just because it doesn't pass emissions. I hope this guy still gets some of his money back.
    Imagine if we had to get rid of all cars with a VW TDI engine made since 2009. This would be millions of cars.
