  • Here's the fourth video for the Music Director series I started a few weeks ago!
Here is our 100% LIVE rendition of Todd Galberth's "We Lift Your Name", arranged by yours truly.
DISCLAIMER: we had some issues with the gain levels and wireless mic interference on the Lead microphone. I did my best to mix it, but sometimes you just have to deal with unclean and distorted audio files.
You can find the original video (without the MD cues) here: • "We Lift Your Name" - ...
    SINGERS:
    Worship Leader: Jessica Vance
    Soprano: Tiffany Keys
    Alto: Shy'keya Potts

At first the MD instructions irritated me, but now I appreciate them. They help me to understand directing, and it’s also good to hear a band follow directions. 😊

I commented before about how good an instructional video this is from an MD standpoint. There is one exception: I don’t understand why, when the song is in the key of D-flat, the MD calls B-flat and C-flat (B enharmonically) “3” and “4” respectively. In the key of D-flat, B-flat is 6, and C-flat is the flat 7. I’m a music theorist with a BA in Jazz Studies, so that confused the heck out of me when my MD started calling it that way.

I’m a harmony nerd. And I love anything arranging or harmony related. The answer here is much simpler than what it seems.
This song is indeed in C#, but in the final part (call it bridge if you will) the key center switches to F# instead. Therefore the number system switches to accomodate the key of the second half of the song, which is in fact F# 🎶☺️

@@TheJazzPianist there is no indication of the key switching to F# at the end. The song merely bounces between C# Ionian and C# Myxolydian throughout. Now…is F# the parent key of C# Myxolydian? Yes, it is…but that pertains to a great deal of the song, not just the ending. Every time you hear a G#m or a B major during the verse or chorus, you’re hearing the F# major key signature…but C# is clearly the tonal center. So I hear the ending as them choosing to “tonicize” B Lydian-which is of course 7 in the aforementioned C# Myxolydian-especially since they never cadence on (or even _play_) an F# chord at that point. The only thing that changes is the chords they rest on. My trained ear still *clearly* hears C# as the tonic throughout the song, even the ending.
Perhaps the MD simply chose to rearrange the numbering system because “three-four” is less of a mouthful than “six-flat seven.” 😄 And for that I wouldn’t blame him. 👍🏼

@@bobjames5264 The amount of times you mentioned "I'm a theorist", "My trained ear"... it makes me wanna stop having a conversation, you're clearly more interested in stating your theoretical knowledge and your degrees, than listening to somebody who's actually arranging and music directing this band and this music. I say that, just to clarify, since you said "Perhaps the MD simply chose" etc. etc. etc.... I am the MD in this video. You're commenting under my video on my page :) It reminds me of when I posted a video of us playing a John P Kee song, it went viral, and there were people saying "they're playing this all wrong", without knowing the WRITER and ARTIST himself had reposted the video on all his pages, and personally reached out to me and the band to congratulate us on executing his music flawlessly.
This song starts in C#, and ends in F#. Simple as that. You don't always need a progression, or a big 5-1 statement to change keys. Pivot chords are real, and sometimes, in many contemporary styles, a 4 can become the new 1. It doesn't have anything to do with modes. C#mixo and F#major are the same scale, as far as the notes that make them up. However you have to listen to the melodic cues and the harmonic progressions and even, in the context of gospel music, the key-center that the worship-leader and/or pastor use to improvise when they exhort over the song. The simplest (non-theoretical or Berklee/Juilliard book-based) way to explain this is: any worship leader or pastor who has to "improvise" or "exhort" (typical in gospel music, and especially black pentecostal churches) over the second half of this song, would do so by singing F# major pentatonics and using F# as the tonal center.
This type of music is completely beyond any music theory or harmony talks. Just try to enjoy and trust the person whose videos and arrangements you're commenting on. Not everything on the internet has to be an opportunity to say "IN MY OPINION", or "THIS IS WRONG, IT SHOULD BE THIS". I have a double degree from Berklee College of Music, Jazz Piano Performance plus an Arranging/Theory/Production degree. But I truly couldn't care less. It ain't a competition, it's music and, in this case, it's worship.

I love these videos, I'd love videos on how you practice to prep to know the "special parts" and go over them with the band beforehand.

I liked the specials; especially the ones you commented had to be rehearsed because they're too complex to call. Rehearsal is everything! Great arrangements Nikko! Great work! Great Praise Team!

At the spontaneous flow part, can you explain me about the sounds that you used there? I heard some type of piano sound, layered with pads and some type of bells...I don't know 🤷🏻‍♂️ But I just love the preset!
