It was actually Luc who saved the day and not any of the level 20 characters who might well have kept chasing illusions until Trent managed to kill at least some of them. Great session.
Trent did reveal that he was sent to get Omentis by Ludinus as Omentis was a servant of Predathos forgotten by history according to him. Also I loved the comedian both in his opening act and as Aggy, who was here for a good time not a long time xD. He really took the opportunity to have as much fun with as little care as possible which fittingly taught Luc a valuable lesson on what happens if he doesn't listen to his aunts and uncles! "He's not actually dead right?" had me rolling!
Did he? I think he only said about an anciet power that reached out to him. And if Omentis was a servant of Predathos why did Trent need to drink the Adenus sap. That was supposed to be used to bind oneself to Abbysal lords. And from what we know Predathos has nothing to do with the Abbys. Did i miss where Trent said something about Ludinus?
@@miafiolekova5817 I'll have to wait for the vod to confirm as I can't remember the specific phrasing but in the messages delivered through magic mouth he mentions voices in his head and I believe he mentions someone tied to the Predathos plan specifically telling him to get Omentis as he was an old servant lost to time, the Adenus sap was Trents ego wanting to do his own thing and he mentions teaching Ludinus a lesson iirc. Now I don't recall if the Adenus sap was said to only work with abyssal lords or if it's supposed to work with any similarily powerful dark being but it's also possible that because Predathos and Omentis were threats forgotten by time, and any knowledge of them being kept from the public by that temples of Vasselheim, people simply don't know/remember it works on other beings than just abyssal lords.
@@madDjakni Could be, i mean its a good theory, i just missed it. Well in any case it was a great show and great story. Cant wait for monday to rewatch it. And it is very well possible to be tied to Predathos somehow. Matt is playing the long game here.
Another thing to remember about the combat in this special/live show (which from what I saw, I enjoyed) is that it was a one-shot that needed to wrap up nicely which I think it achieved. Thanks for the post, take care all.
I haven't watched all of the live shows (I've barely touched any Vox Machina content besides Legend of Vox Machina) but this was by far my favorite of the ones I have seen. It was nice to see what the M9 had been up to since they defeated Uk'Otoa. I'm happy that Caleb finally got closure by sealing Trent away in the demiplane, and Luc is a great new character of Sam's that I hope shows up again. I'm looking forward to the next M9 one-shot, which will probably be Fjord and Jester's wedding. I started CR with the M9 and they will always be my favorite characters.
I actually really loved the comedian at the beginning and his character! He can join Chris Perkins' "shortest guest appearances before complete death" ranks!
What made me personally terrified for them is that we know from C3 that resurrection magic is off the table. If one of them had died, they wouldn't come back. Being in the arena and part of the crowd when everyone realised that Trent had basically opened combat with a Meteor Swarm, was such a chilling moment. I completely disagree that the first part of combat was "easy" it was not. We were all very tensed, and I think it was extremely smart of Sam to introduce a teenager version of Luc in the equation. From the start we all know it's a bad idea to have a kid in high combat, and we saw a guest being vaporized, and suddenly he is in a middle of the biggest spells possible, and Kaijus going at each other. I also think that the second part of combat was way easier, and you could feel it in the atmosphere. Tension was still present, but it was much more cheerful. But I think it's coming from the time constraint of the liveshow format. The arena was supposed to close at 11pm, and London trains don't run all night. More than 10k people had to go home (most of them via public transport and we were 30mn away from Central London), and we started combat after 10pm... People around me were checking the time on their phone, and the minute it finished, people were already down the alleys to get out of the arena. If this had been a studio recorded episode, that would have been a 4h long fight and very different imo. Here they came to entertain a lot of people and they truly delivered. Content-wise I don't think it was the best liveshow, but if you were in the room, it probably was.
I think what made combat so tense and engaging were not the spells or tactics used cause yeah I mean a Barbarian or a monk will do meele attacks, the warlock will throw Eldritch Blasts, those are predictable. What made it for me was the absolute *insanity* of the damage rolls that level 20, high level spells could do. Caduceus literally took 140+ points of damage from ONE spell of Trent's. We've never seen level 20 M9 fight, I was personally terrified for my life that they were gonna drop unconscious or dead at every turn because I just *could NOT* compute with the insanity of these numbers
I think what makes Trent such a good vilian is that he is a narcisistic manitulator. Most people have met someone like that in their lives or at least heard off someone like that irl and would love to puch him out. So they could realate to Calebs struggles with him.
Oh I so related to that as well. I’ve dealt with a narcissist and manipulator very recently so I can absolutely relate to Caleb and I really wanted to punch Trent.
Being there was amazing. The atmosphere was electric. Having the intro as a full-on karaoke sing-along was insane. Sam was so funny, channeling Freddie Mercury and Ginger Spice. One of the best evenings I have ever experienced

Didn't care for the 'opening act' much. Too many f-bombs with too few jokes in between for me. It was a fun watch and I will probably re-watch it again when it hits TH-cam.
Matt was giving me strong Sweeney Todd vibes. And I won't apologize for saying I didn't think Daniel was that funny. You can make the audience laugh without resorting to obscenities. I'm not saying it offends me; I'm just saying you don't always have to resort to f-bombs and sex jokes to get a laugh from people...if you're good, that is.
My 2nd favourite of all time under Bo Burnham It's not often a stand up makes me genuinely think and then cry all whilst laughing Him and Bo are the only ones who've done that for me
Both this and the last M9 reunion were simply fine. They felt a bit rushed and a bit easy for the threat they both posed, and I think some of that comes from being confined to such short run times. Certainly fun, but not the best episodes.
I think the comedian that opened was really awful and offensive if I’m honest. All he did was swear and they call it comedy. Seemed really out of place. The actual show was amazing though.
I have disagreed with some of Matthew’s rulings before, but I don’t really care to much, because in totality he’s the best (Sorry Brendan, it’s not even close). But for the first time ever I actively cringed and shook my head at a Mercer’s ruling. When he asks Marisha to explain to him how Sentinel could stop the big guy. I was about as shocked as Marisha. I would have answered Matt by opening up the players hand book and read him the sentinel feat, that’s how. If Matt wants to home brew how sentinel doesn’t work against gargantuan creatures, the players should be made aware that Matt has added “does not work against gargantuan creatures” to the feat before they chose it.
I guess I'm in the minority. I got bored and ended up turning it off. Admittedly, I don't watch Critical Role for the combat (even in real life, I find high level combat boring). I'm here for the RP.
Was pretty fun, but yea I agree that we kind of only got small portions of that RP dynamic that we love from M9. Personally I'd love to see just a more chill style RP focused one-shot or mini campaign of M9 (like the first M9 Reunited that was 2 parts so we got more time). Maybe something similar to like the Vox Machina Wedding one shot, which really allowed us to see their dynamics ALL over again and it was sooo sweet :)) Edit: I'd love to see Isharnai again! We've been going through like the different M9 member's main villains, and Isharnai was such a cool NPC/villain which i feel like her whole encounter was very RP focused, so I'd love to see how Isharnai would deal with M9 and Jester Lavorre....
It was okay, entertaining, though the guest seemed to totally derail and undermine the game for his brief play time. Matt appeared annoyed. But that's all just my opinion.
I think the perception of Matt being annoyed might be projection. As the DM, he totally knew that Aggy's presence was supposed to be pure chaos and silliness, and went right along with it. I think it went on a little roo long, and could have had more thank just slapstick nonsense the whole time, but whatev. I am glad I got to fast forward through some of it though, I'll say that much about it.
no. it wasnt the beat love show. not by far. it was actually pretty bad and it started off with that idiot thinking he was a comedian. the whole of critical role gets worse and worse as it stopped being an actual fun to watch d&d game with voice actors and became a shown that panders to the audience and is more about protecting their ip more than actually playing d&d.
I loved how Matt handled the audio issues during the show by just incorporating them into the narrative on the fly.
Oh mate, he was such a pro at that! I wouldn’t be able to do that!
I was so disappointed they minimised it for the recording. The issues were so much louder in the arena and really had impact with how Matt used them
