  • A theory was born on a road trip...Is the first Bond movie of each Bond actor their best? Being James Bond and The Bond Experience explore this theory one actor at a time. Our third in the series is Live and Let Die with Roger Moore....

This is my favorite Roger Moore Bond movie, and the one I have watched the most. I see it as the handing of the baton from Connery. I saw the movie in the theatre and afterwards thought that Moore really succeeded. I see some of the Connery aspects, and then his own spin. It was a great start to his time as Bond. The travel, the clothes (I love the Chesterfield coat), and Moore's coolness and professionalism did it for me.

Live and Let Die was my 1st encounter with Bond, I was just a toddler when my dad took me to see it and it gave me nightmares for months. My parents played the soundtrack record all the time and even that title track scared the crap out of me.

Same here! Watched it for the first time Christmas Day 2002 (worst thing I coulda done,) and I had nightmares due for about 3 or 4 months due largely to Geoffrey Holder. He was freaky as hell to 9 year old me.. now it's one of my favorites and I love Geoffrey in it.

Yaphett's such an underrated actor. Shame his experience with LALD wasn't good, he just didn't fit well personality wise with the producers and the director but he brought the goods. If he would have hit now instead of 1970's he would be a top actor for sure.

I’m a 1972 child. My first Bond movies were broadcast on ABC in the 70’s. The very first one I saw was either Diamonds Are Forever, or Live and Let Die, or The Man with the Golden Gun, not sure which. The final scene in LALD on the train was very impressionable on me, especially the closing shot of Baron Samedi sitting in front of the train and laughing into the camera.

Love this film-full of memorable characters and exciting sequences!
Saw it in theatres and though I missed Sean Connery ,I accepted Roger immediately and it was strange that he was actually OLDER than Sean even though he looked much younger!
As far as the Blaxploitation aspect, the 007 series has a long history of following hot movie and tv trends:
    Hitchcock-From Russia with Love
    Blaxploitation-Live and let die
Martial arts-The Man with the golden gun
    Space films-Moonraker
    Adventure - Octopussy
80s drug dealer action- License to kill
    90s crazy action-Tomorrow Never Dies
    Bourne -Casino Royale/Quantum of solace
    Dark Knight-Skyfall
    Marvel universe-Spectre

One of the hallmarks of the Connery-5 series is that Bond takes missions at the edges of the former British Empire, wherever Britain once had been and was, then, still represented. That hangs on in Live and Let Die, and maybe the Blaxploitation angle represents a squint at the Colonies. It was all about loss of control at the fringes.

I think Roger Moore’s best is For Your Eyes Only, then Live and Let Die, then The Spy Who Loved Me. Funnily enough, my biggest gripe with LALD is the stupid choice of giving Bond a huge ass 44 Magnum as his weapon for the Solitaire rescue mission. Maybe it’s because I’m into firearms, but it’s just such an unrealistic choice of sidearm for that mission that it’s ridiculous. Still love the movie though. The entire boat sequence is incredible to this day.

"Live and Let Die" is the first Bond film I ever saw. I must have been 10 or 11 years old and remember being very impressed - I loved it; in fact, it was my favourite Bond film for a long time.
Now it is not my favourite anymore (ranks at number 9), not even my favourite from Moore (that would be the fabulous "For Your Eyes Only", also a favourite from teenage years) but I still love it.
Blaxploitation, Paul McCartney and bright colours - "Live and Let Die" is a stylistic milestone of the early 70s. Screenwriter Tom Mankiewicz gets the best out of Roger Moore without making him a full-time clown.
As with most of Hamilton's Bond films, the second half is weaker (one chase scene after another...), but it doesn't take away from the fact that this is one of the most entertaining, consistent Bond adaptions.

  • @mdurwin

    Notes:
The producers didn’t want the McCartney version, they thought it was a demo. They wanted Thelma Houston to re-record it. George Martin had to pressure them to use it.
Also, my vote for the best James Bond actor:
    Chiwetel Ejiofor
    Or Robert Pattinson
Bond needs to be cultured with a little crazy in his eyes. Someone who no one realizes he can snap like a snake and kill with his bare hands. And the clean up well in a tux. I think either of these guys could definitely pull it off.

The boat chase scene was very dragged out and felt like my attention was strained compared to the Amazon boat chase in Moonraker. However I do agree with many of the points raised here and totally admit Jane Seymour possibly remained the best looking Bond girl of the Moore era.

LALD is my favourite Moore Bond film by a large margin, too. I never was much into TSWLM, MR or TMWTGG or OP. Pretty good were FYEO and - believe it or not - AVTAK ... where Roger may have been a little too old for the part but I still like the movie much better than the other mentioned ones.
Being more of a Connery and Craig fan it may be, like David pointed out, that‘s because the comic elements were kept down and his Bond portrayal was a bit tougher than later.

This film was my first foray into the Bond series as an impressionable 14 year old. Loved it, I was hooked. While waiting for the next one, went back and checked out Goldfinger and Thunderball. Became a Connery fan as well. These are my favorites, as well as License to KIll with Timothy Dalton, who I thought was amazing as Bond. I left the series when Dalton was cut loose and replaced by Brosnan, a lightweight by comparison. Live and Let Die will always be a classic for me.

I love this film for many reasons. One reason is the mix of the absurd and the deadly - the funeral procession used as an assassination and scooping up the corpse in the coffin. This has a similar vibe to the three blind mice killing in Dr No and it was clearly an inspiration for the Spectre PTS which is one of my favourite PTS (pity about the helicopter bit at the end but that's another story). Bring on more of the absurd / deadly mix which is done so well by older Bond films but has been thin on the ground recently.

I'm partial to Moore era Bond in the 70's for reasons other than based solely on the merits of the films themselves, but because they were by-products of a magical era of movie making creativity that splashed onto the scene from all corners of the spectrum. You had Star Wars in 77' (which influenced Moonraker), Jaws that same year, then the Exoricst, the Shining, the Godfather then the Bond films in succession: Octopussy, Live and let Die, Diamonds are Forever, Moonraker. Then you had the rock band, KISS explode onto the scene in 77' with their out of this world antics. I mean, it was all new, innovative and just spectacular, all-consuming from all directions all day long. It was a fantastic era to be a kid!! The 70's pop culture sensibility will never be replicated in magnitude or topped in it's sheer brilliance any time soon, the ingeniuity that went into coming up with the concepts for movies and the cerebral dialogue of the scripts overall, as well as the fashion sense and musical expression just can't be beat.
For me, it was all about three things in my youth: Star Wars, James Bond, and KISS, period. So, when I judge the Bond films collectively within this context, they take on a much more viscereal quality, one that escalates them into a different realm of appreciation. Because they mean more when they're seen alongside other things, and appreciated along side other things.

No mention of Geoffrey Holder's Baron Samedi and just a passing mention of my third favourite henchman Julius Harris' Tee Hee (behind Jaws and Oddjob)? For me the Roger Moore order is: 1. The Spy Who Loved Me (overall 2nd-- love Jaws) 2. Moonraker (overall 7th) 3. Live And Let Die (overall 11th) 4. A View To A Kill (overall 20th) 5. For Your Eyes Only (overall 21st) 6. Octopussy (overall 22nd) and finally 7. The Man With The Golden Gun (overall the caboose at 25th).

Just imagine being the producers after Diamonds are Forever, wondering how to approach their new casting decision. They had two disgruntled stars in Connery and Lazenby, one who had hitherto only had minor supporting before skyrocketing with his 6 Bond films, and the other having been a male model one hit wonder. Now they're hitching their wagon to an actor who had been THE biggest TV star on the planet and seen by more people than anyone else, who had been contracted by the big Hollywood studios. Ivanhoe, The Alaskans, Maverick, The Saint, The Persuaders, The Man who Haunted Himself. He'd produced shows, he'd designed his own clothing, he rubbed shoulders with A list celebrities; he was one himself. So was that the right decision? Would the audience see Simon Templar or Lord Brett Sinclair on the screen instead of James Bond? It must've been quite nerve-wracking, but also confidence inspiring at the same time. And it obviously worked. Roger Moore WAS James Bond. I don't think he was Connery-esque at all, and I don't put that down to the cigars, bourbon, lack of tuxedo and "shaken not stirred", Q's absence, blonde with blue eyes. The big difference for me in this film particularly is that Moore is very English. There's a calm, smooth, unflappable confidence. Yes, the same can be said of Connery, but quintessential Englishness is slightly different. The scene which exemplifies this for me is when Bond slowly and calmly walks over to the bin and drops the gun that Tee Hee has just bent into it saying "funny how the least little thing amuses him". None of the other actors could've delivered that scene.

LALD is the best Moore & also one of the best Bond films. The best Bond is probably Connery with YOLT & DAF as his peak moments. But the best ever ever Bond film is clearly definitely OHMSS. Best music, best cars, best dialogue, best locations & best women. "A slight stiffness..." Diana Rigg, Annouska Hemple & Jo Lumley... What else do you want?

This, TMWTGG, and FYEO are Moore’s best. Of course you can’t deny that TSWLM is a classic Bond film, but the rest of Moore’s films are comedy Bond and/or TV Bond (AVTAK).

I dont find my first bond I watched shaped my views that much. although I can't remember what it was exactly I know Thunderball was the first I owned on vhs but I think watched tomorrow never dies or the world is not enough first on TV. While Casino Royale was the first I watched in the cinema. I tend to prefer the Moore or Dalton along with the first 3 Connery films. all for different reasons. I don't feel that Brosnans have aged that well and find it a little odd watching them these days.

I am a huge fan of LALD but I believe Moores best Bond is Spy Who Loved Me. Moore is fabulous in that film. Though Roger plays a quip fabulously he is really good when he needs to be serious. That scene when he admits to killing her husband. He gives it weight. And sorry but no other Bond film touches the score from Live And let.

Anything directed by Guy Hamilton (yes, including “Goldfinger”) is barely a notch above a made-for-TV movie. From the bedroom comedy opening to the “ballooning” of the villain, this tripe has a hastily-made, lower-budget feel to it, without one ounce of the book’s suspense. Granted, a 1973 film couldn’t possibly reflect some of the cultural and racial attitudes of a 1953 novel. But this film, in addition to cashing in on the “Blaxploitation” craze of that time, is merely a forerunner to “Smokey And The Bandit.” Hamilton had seriously suggested Burt Reynolds as Bond - which should tell you something! (He may be the only director who could make “The Battle Of Britain” dull!)
It took awhile, but Roger Moore actually played Ian Fleming’s James Bond once, in “For Your Eyes Only.” Far and away, his best Bond film!

My first Bond was The spy who loved me. Did nothing for me then (but was only 12 at the time), still, have watched it many times since then, continues to be one of my least favourite and very forgettable. Live and let die is a far more interesting and better movie in my opinion. I became a huge Moore-Bond fan despite this and still thinks For your eyes only is the best Bond ever made. Second best is Lazenby, love his one, and sadly only foray into Bond.
By the way, Carole Bouquet from FYEO was great in La Mante on Netflix by the way, imho.

Live and Let Die doesn't feel like the rest of Moore's films...in a GOOD way. It's still toward the bottom of the pack for me, but I can totally appreciate what a "rich" film it is. It doesn't get much better than Jane Seymour and a pack of hungry crocodiles.

Never liked it when Bond is in the USA. It just doesn’t seem right. It looks out of place. Maybe it’s because the largely British or European production crew, make the US scenes feel wrong, like they don’t understand the culture. Hollywood films set in the US, understand the culture better, and look more real.

    • @RighteousBrother
      @RighteousBrother 5 ปีที่แล้ว

Yeah - I totally agree with that, Diamonds are Forever, A View to a Kill and License to Kill have always felt weird to me for that very reason, much prefer it when Bond is in European locations.
