This movie is two movies. The first half is great. Once Bond is headed to the ice palace it turns into the worst Bond film ever.

I actually have a warm spot for this film because it was one of my mom's favorites and one of the last she watched before she passed away.
(My parents took me to see James Bond films over and over growing up!)
Objectively though,It's got lots of good moments and plenty of bad.
I love the invisible car and the ice chase and I think that some of the action is terrific.
I like the larger than life world in danger elements that some James Bond movies should definitely have.
I also think the moment Bond walks into the hotel with his beard is one of Brosnans best as 007.
But....it also has really bad writing, the series worst one liners and the single worst scene in any 007 adventure!
(Of course that's the tidal wave surfing!)
    So is it his worst?
Of course it is but it's still fun to watch!

Over the top rubbish all bond movies are fine at the start then unfold into unbelievable story lines contrived and obviously pre planned disjointed. Casino Royale worked the best as a whole as it flowed well as a whole.when they travel to other countries it can spoil the flow or story with elaborate gadgets and unrealistic stories/ bad guys .

I always enjoyed Bond movies growing up, I was born in 85 and Goldeneye N64 really brought me deep into the world so I was around 17 when DAO released and I went to go see it with another 007 fan and we were very disappointed. Now I find a lot of the movie enjoyable but back then my expectations were very high. Wish they would bring Dalton or Pierce back one last time as Old Man Bond like MGSV4 or Logan.

This could have been Brosnans best Bond movie. The first 30 minutes of this film is really good with Bond being captured in the pre title sequence in North Korea and Bond being tortured in the opening credits with the music playing and the exchange of prisoners in the demilitarised zone, then like they say it goes down hill fast. Which is a shame because it could have been one of the best.

I remember not going to see James Bond DAD because they had become too campy. I loved when Timothy Dalton took over from Roger Moore. I actually enjoyed “The Living Daylights”. I had actually given up on Bond after “The Man with the Golden Gun” because they didn’t reflect the book character as envisioned by Fleming. Back to DAD, I actually was watching on TV and recording it and I loved the opening sequences up to the Hong Kong hotel...I couldn’t believe how good and how much fun it was and then feeling a new excitement. They then torpedo my excitement with the rest of the story and at that point I was tortured like Bond seemingly with my head in the toilet... the only difference is, I did it to myself by watching the rest of it to the end. I thank the producers of the Bourne series...although, again, not faithful to the books, for treating the character as real and capable. The events in our real world demanded a new seriousness and thankfully EON productions finally payed attention.

I saw this again for the first time since seeing it in theaters a few months ago and I actually found it not as bad as I remember it. It's all fairly promising until the ice palace. Even then, the ice lake car chase is great. Heck, even the cringey dialogue with Jinx in Cuba isn't enough to sink the movie for me. Still, Brosnan's worst, though no fault of his own.

I agree with everything that you guys say, Joe and David. On the other hand, in the same year the videogame 007: Nightfire was released and boy! I really wish that videogame was the movie intead of Die Another Day! It has a better story and it's better written in a BIG way! To be honest, I like to see Die Another Day just because of nostalgia. Back in the day, I lived incredible moments by watching the film with my cousins and after seeing the movie we played that we're MI6 agents hahaha! So, for that reason, sometimes I like to see it but it's not my "go to" Brosnan movie when I really want to see one of his. I tend to go to Goldeneye or The World is Not Enough. I send you my greetings! :D

  • @joelmaisano8481

Strange that David & Joe say that Bond and Graves are meeting for the first time in the fencing scene. They'd, of course, previously met when Graves was still Colonel Moon. And Graves/Moon was already contemptuous of Bond from that first meeting. The film is fascinating for its story of a fanatically anti-Western North Korean communist military leader who goes to the incredible extreme of changing his physical AND cultural identity, all for his monomaniacal goal of breeching the South Korean border. (And pleasing his father.) Will Yun Lee's performance as Moon in the pre-credits sequence is the foundation of the story.
    I love DIE ANOTHER DAY.

I literally laughed out loud in parts of this, and was willing for that laser to take out Jinx when she was trapped in the chair.🤭 I was so incensed, I wrote the first act of a potential screenplay for the following film, and posted it to Michael Wilson at Eon! It was returned to me via their lawyers in California.😬 Really sad end to Brosnan's tenure though.😔

Listening to David and it's like our Bond evolution was similar. There was a documentary I think called Being Bond and they interviewed the producers and they knew that the story was going to be an issue in a post 911 world that was a little bit darker. I swear they got the set designers from whoever designed the Beaches Resorts, everything looked like a bright facade and could have been done so much better. The one thing I was hoping someone would bring up was Michael Madsen's character, he's with the CIA but bossing M16 around? I wanted to see Brosnan come back for one more to redeem himself but that just wasn't going to happen.

Die Another Day will always be the Batman and Robin (1997) of the James Bond franchise. It's absolute nonsense and not even entertaining nonsense - awful CGI, a pointless Madonna cameo, a terrible theme song, and atrocious dialogue that Halle Berry was mostly lumbered with. There's no redeeming qualities about it. It has zero atmosphere because so much of it was filmed in front of green screens.
The only good thing you can say about it is that if it wasn't so awful we probably wouldn't have got the brilliant Casino Royale. Pierce Brosnan would've kept his job and the producers would've made another cartoonish entry.

I believe the car chase scene between Bond and Zao was after the CGI wave scene.. not before, I think David got the scene order mixed up. I actually still don’t mind the whole ice palace part of the movie, I think that whole sequence is fun & enjoyable but the CGI wave was one step too far.. not to mention how bad it looks, even back in 2002 it didn’t look good.. because I remember my dad saying how fake it looked when we were driving back home after we left the cinema 😂
If you remove that CGI wave scene, maybe a couple of the cheesy one liners.. and change the plane sequence at the end.. I think it would have been a great Bond movie and one of the best in the franchise to be honest. Because everything else in my opinion is really good 👌🏽

Ilsa Faust [Rebecca Ferguson] in Mission Impossible Rouge Nation is what Jinx's should have been- a mysterious force who we are unsure we can trust but want to know more about. She works well in Fallout and I'm glad she's returning for the new films but it's a shame she hasn't had a spin off yet [and she's ex MI6 so there's room for Bond crossover!]. Jinx on the other hand comes across as really underwritten [as the spin off was meant to be a prequel], has to be rescued by Bond in Iceland, Hallie Berry is miscast and just doesn't make you want to see a whole movie with her.

It was great until Bond left for Cuba The minute Berry comes in it loses it very quickly. Bronsnan was great as Bond when the script was good, he was epic in the hotel scenes in HK. Just surfing Mr Chang is so cool. So is the suit with red tie scene when he gets told Zoo is in China. That is cool on Connery level. Shames PB didn't get that one definitive great Bond film. The pre-titles is decent and the first half is not bad at all. BUT it totally drops off a cliff about half way through. Halle Berry is so, so cringe, it's difficult to watch. The love scene after the beach in 'Cuba' is vomit-inducing. The invisible Vanquish is too far. Ice palace sequence is so bad. Climax on the aircraft is dull. End love scene is cringe beyond belief, just end the damn film already. Even Judi Dench is directed to be weird in this film, why does she HATE Bond so much?

  • @gf4670
    @gf4670 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

It's his worst by a pretty wide margin. But the thing is, I also kind of understand where they were coming from. That whole period was kind of lost as far as films went, especially action films, after The Matrix and LOTR and the Star Wars prequels. CGI had reached that point like a lot of tech does where you could do it but nobody really understands how to do it yet and it's a mess for a while, which was the 2000s (don't get me started on Indiana Jones 4). Everyone thought they could wallpaper over no attempt at writing with CGI in a sort of Michael Bay-ification of the movie industry. It was a disaster and looking back you can see why people started to gravitate to the more low-key, on-the-ground more realistic stuff like Bourne and putting the heavy CGI in the more pure fantasy fare like Marvel where it fits better, while the stuff that tries to still merge realism and fantasy too much, like the recent attempts at Terminator, continue to bomb. It's sort of like my excuse for LTK: it tried too hard to keep up with its time and match what it saw as its competition instead of being true to itself. That's what made CR so good; it sort of upended and rebooted its own genre combining elements of where action and spy films were going while still being totally recognizable as Bond.

I would love to have seen Brosnan or Dalton (in their prime) in the Casino Royal reboot. It's all about timing. After recently rewatching Dalton (Living Daylights) and Brosnan's TWINE...as much as I was excited about them both as 007, I think they were both too casual and more like male models and lacked dynamics and enthusiasm. Even as one dimensional as stone face, uncharismatic Craig is, at least he brings an intensity.

It has so many cringe moments (but they’re funny cringe moments) however it’s still a fun film. Halle Berry is poor but Pierce is doing his best. It does go south once it goes Ice Palace. Love the song too - it’s different.

For me, this is a very watchable Bond. Probably a bottom third film for me. I tend to rank Bond films into three categories: Top Tier Cinema, Top Tier Bond, and Watchable Bond. Top Tier Cinema are the Bond films I think stand up as outstanding films in any genre, films like Golden Eye, From Russia with Love, Casino Royale. Top Tier Bond are films that stand out in the franchise, but not necessarily more widely. Films like Live and Let Die, Thunderball and World is not Enough. Everything else is Watchable! That's the great thing about this franchise, even the 'worst' films are still entertaining.

Agree with David 100%. The Aston Martin scene was fantastic. Idk if that stems from it being the first Bond movie with an Aston in it since Goldeneye, but that whole chase was great. Rest of the movie is soooo cringe-worthy. Especially now.

For me a fascinating question is how they could write something as dumb as DAD. Like Moonraker, it falls of a cliff half way through. This film was the first Bond that left me stone cold. Spectre is the second, I think it's the worst Bond with DAD a close second.

I just re-watched Die Another Day again for the first time since I saw it in theaters. I hated it when I saw it in the theater.
GoldenEye was a Timothy Dalton movie that feels like it was meant for him.
Tomorrow Never Dies feels like a video game, possibly after the success of GoldenEye N64.
The World is Not Enough is probably the best for Pierce even though GoldenEye is usually considered to be better.
Die Another Day feels like an updated Thunderball or a campy Roger Moore era Bond.

I have to chime in here and say I am not outraged with this assessment. 'I'm missed to kill, now there's a name to die for' is the singular worst line of dialogue in not just a Bond film, but ANY film. However, I cannot fault the ambition of DAD. Flipping an Aston Martin, driving it through an ice palace, invisible cars, perhaps the writers and producers can just be accused of having too much fun. PB

  • @mikelykan.9416
    @mikelykan.9416 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Die Another Day failed because it leapt 30years into the future with invisible cars, and being able to genetically alter you ethnicity. The bad CGI didn't help and the silly henchmen either.
    I'm Mr Kill
Well that's a name to die for.
    I mean come on?
I didn't like how they turned Pierce Brosnan into a Roger Moore type Bond because that belonged to Roger and he made it his own. Then there's Madonna . Who thought it was a good idea to have her in this? John Cleese being Basil Fawlty instead of Q and Halle Berrys Jinx who managed to survive a very high dive.
It did give us talent to look out for like Rosamund Pike and Toby Stephens who are both great actors.
This will get better as it gets older with the next generation of Bond fans because the technology will be more believable.

I think that this is by far Brosnan's worst, and for me it's one of the 3 worst official Bond movies of all time. I get that it was spectacular, but by this point in time, the budgets and technology and moviemaking techniques were so sophisticated that there really was no excuse to mess up a Bond movie so badly. They had the cream of talent available, and they created something so goofy and far-fetched that they disappeared up their own asses with their blend of CGI, celebrity, sponsorships and marketing opportunities they were working into their formula that it was just a bunch of crap.

Bond for a time was plausibly unrealistic. There came a time (during the Moore era) when suspension of disbelief just went out the window. There is a reason why Bond is now challenged and perhaps surpassed by franchises like Bourne and Mission Impossible; series that probably wouldn't even be in existence if there had never been a James Bond.

Sometimes subjective bias & personal preferences can adversely color what should be a more objective examination. For instance, "that couldn't happen" sentiment, for a fantasy film seems rather inappropriate. Fantasy films are not supposed to "get real" It's all about entertainment.
