Back to ten years ago, “girl crush” concept wasn’t really a big thing in Korea. When 2NE1 debuted, they built up a brand new image of female idols and shocked the whole Kpop industry. However, their unique clothes, edgy hairstyles and heavy makeup didn’t widely get accepted and loved by the majority in Korea. In fact, they were called “ugly unnies” since day one because of the strong hip-hop style that YG put on them. The background story of < ugly>: One day CL asked their producer Teddy why people always judged and humiliated others if someone didn’t fit the mainstream. Why audiences could easily point at them and called them “ugly” just because they didn’t fit the “beauty standards”. And this is why the song be written and composed. So many groups nowadays debuted as “girl crush” style successfully; many fans are obsessed with them, and even Koreans do. Those girl groups should really say thanks to 2NE1, for these four ladies carried those harsh criticism, endured discrimination and made Kpop become more various. We should all appreciate their efforts and bravery, when they broke the barriers and expanded the Kpop industry.
It was NOT because of the clothes or because of the hip-hop style. It was because their faces didn’t fit the super narrow Korean standard of beauty. Tbh, it never made sense to me. They especially picked on CL for being ugly but I personally think she’s really pretty. Then they hated on Minzy so much for her looks, then when she got a nose job they criticized her for it...like, they always find something to hate.

This is because when 2ne1 debuted Knetz called them an ugly group because they are not the typical barbie like idols. So this song was made by Teddy and this is 2ne1's answer to their bashers and haters. The poor girls admitted that even YG himself calls them ugly. Especially CL. Bom's line is like saying that sometimes people tend to see just the face so even if you can sing if you're not pretty, people doesn't seem to care if you're talented just because you're ugly. This is a breakthrough song which made some bashers turn the other way around and accept them. This song gained so much fame. You should watch Daesung's cover of Ugly. ;)
Yeh I love blackpink but I couldn’t believe he publicly said he wanted to make a copy of 2ne1 “but also be pretty.” Like what the hell?!?!! That’s fucking disgusting and pissed me off. Went i got into 2NE1 i always thought that they were beautiful (I'm still do) but after watching 2NE1 TV I understand why people called them ugly was because YG himself called them ugly in that reality show...one time he said to CL that she was really ugly because she was without makeup while she was in recording room and CL said to the camera that she would never show her face without makeup on... Another time the girls baked cookies for YG and TEDDY when the girls went to YG to give him the cookies he saw them in told them that they were ugly... And in another moment the girls were doing a rehearsal and they were without makeup YG called them ugly in from their whole stuff...
I personally think that YG was their biggest bully... and I also think that was the reason people felt free to say awful things about them because YG didn't protected them... .. also YG gave them weird outfits I love their outfits but SKorean(most Sk male) were really harsh on them
Something that I really love about 2NE1 members is that no matter how much they were criticated(their weight, faces, looks, outfit) they always have their head up they always fights against that through using their best weapons THEIR TALENT is unmatched that's why people love them so much... This song reflects the Korean community and their obsession with being pretty 😔
I’ve seen some youtubers that live in Korea talk about how Korean people are really blunt and freely comment on people’s appearance. Like, to them it’s normal to tell someone “you’re ugly”, “you’ve gained weight” just as often as they would tell someone “you’re handsome/pretty “ or “you look like you’ve lost weight”. Personally I think that cultural aspect needs to change because they have such a narrow standard of beauty that anyone that doesn’t fit that specific mold is considered ugly. This is why they have such a big plastic surgery business and also why it’s so common for people to “diet”, which often means starve themselves. I remember when Taeyang got #2 on some list about the most beautiful people, a lot of knetz were commenting about how it was so absurd because he was so “ugly”, just because he doesn’t fit their standard. Funny enough, some of the people they think are beautiful I’m like “huh? They’re not ugly but they’re certainly not beautiful”. But I’d never mention names because those are personal opinions and it’s certainly disrespectful to call people ugly by name

When 2NE1 debuted they were labeled as "UGLY GROUP" because in 2009 they were "different" from usual girl group in South Korea. Their clothes, styling, body types, and music/mv concepts are different. 2NE1 broke the stereotypes in girl groups in Skorea. Yuuuuuuup! all you guys said, I agree. And 2NE1 also labeled as "female BIGBANG" when they debuted. Thaaaaank you guys!!!!!!!!!!!
Some time ago I saw some post where someone translated comments from Knetz when BB debuted and everyone was saying how YHS must be crazy to debut such an ugly group. They called the short and ugly. Both BB and 2NE1 won over the Korean public purely with their songs and talent.

2NE1’s Sandara Park has extended her “Not Ugly” Campaign for another five days after seeing explosive response from international fans. Since the campaign began on August 6th, Sandara Park has received more than 7,000 entries from more than 18 countries, including Korea, Japan, Singapore, France, Turkey, and Saudi Arabia. The entries so far have come from teens concerned about their appearances, as well as regular salary men, athletes, and even house wives.
Sandara Park started the “Not Ugly” campaign on her me2day account with the message, “If you think you are ugly! Send me the reason and your story through my me2day! This SSan Teacher will show you for sure that you are not ugly!” She will accept entries by August 19th and announce the 10 winners by the end of this month. The lucky winners will be invited to a special event that is intended to “give confidence” to their appearances.
“We all sometimes feel useless and ugly. But everybody has their own beauty that no one else has. I hope a lot of people would get encouraged after listening to ‘Ugly,’” Sandara Park said when she began the campaign.
Meanwhile, 2NE1’s latest single, “Ugly,” has swept various Korean music charts achieving the fifth “all-kill” from their second mini album. They are scheduled to hold their first-ever solo concert, “NOLZA,” from August 26th to 28th in Seoul.
YGE couldn't stop calling them ugly in the beginning. Even YG himself was blunt on their natural appearance when they repeat on scene. It affected them sadly in their debut.

When 2NE1 debut they literally break the norms of what a korean gg look like. Tho they've been receiving praises and awards even as a rookie group there's still a lot of hate about their looks. Even YG Pres. called them ugly. 2NE1 experienced so much more than the usual gg.. It's hard enough that their image is totally diff. fr. other but their songs and the way they perf. is way way more diff. also. But that's what make 2NE1 unique and iconic. And trivia, Taeyang used to like Dara , there was a music show where he went to Dara and kissed her on the cheeks. she was also a part of Taeyang's MV, I need a girl. I remembered some time when Gd and Tae yang talked about the same girl that they like, or was that seungri who slipped and talked about it.
Taeyang never said he liked Dara, people just assumed. I think some people even assumed that Eyes Nose Lips was about her but obviously that was a lie. Taeyang mentioned on the pre-debut days that if he and GD liked the same girl, GD would always win because he could easily talk to girls. I highly doubt it was Dara because their trainee period hardly overlapped and when she got to YG she was already over 20 and they were like 16/17. When he kissed Dara on the cheek it was part of a performance, since she was the one featured on the video. There wasn’t any more meaning to it than when TOP kissed Lee Hyori on stage

Did you guys know 2NE1 wasn't actually YGE's first girl group? It was "Big Mama" who debuted back in 2000's. They don't fit the conventional beauty standard of Korea, they're literally big mamas. But they have mind-blowing talent and powerful vocals, and people love their music. But of course, they got lots of hate for simply looking like themselves, for not fitting the mold their society had created for everyone else. And 2NE1, also BIGBANG received lots of hate, people telling them they will flop or disband after they debuted bec they're "ugly". But they just go off and said fuck those beauty standards, we are not making music for you to just look at and criticize our looks. Honestly, I like YHS' vision, ever since he established YGE, he's been trying to change their conservative culture, rebelling against the norm. Altho, I hate how he will call their artists' ugly to their faces, I see the intent and the purpose, but it's just sad that these artists have to be thick-skinned and immune to criticisms. It's just in their culture and society. Koreans can be the most evil people you have met (T.O.P actually said these very words), they will bully anyone until they drove them insane or to death. Also they have high standards when it comes to celebrity. So if you want to be a celebrity there, you have to be thick-skinned. It's just sad and maddening. But props to YGE for making actual efforts in changing that.

Oh, man! I’m so disappointed! The performance of Ugly from their All or Nothing tour is much better, especially the arrangement. Their vocals are so much clearer, and the instrumentation so beautiful.
