    A lot of people who view her as an iconic figurehead forget that she was often a victim of misogyny when she was alive. She did very well in her acting with what she had. This is why Don't Bother To Knock, Some Like It Hot, and The Misfits are my favorites because while she was still putting on that dumb blonde sex pot caricature, she also showed her acting range. I think The Misfits might be the best film she has ever acted in

    I actually read Mamie's book she wrote in the 80s and it was so much tea in that book omg. I see at lot of interviews with her and I don't really buy a lot of what she says. Some of her stories are contradictory and I think she plays up how close she was with MM and Jayne Mansfield. I don't think JM could stand her, but she did agree to take one of Mamie's gigs because she couldn't make it, which is what led her to that fateful crash. I don't think MM really knew who Mamie was or certainly wasn't friends with her. But hey, Mamie was more self aware about her status in Hollywood, and was content with it. That's why she is still alive today. Not chasing fame or prestige like it's a drug.

    Hollywood was gross to want replicas and carbon copies and replacements instead of encouraging originality in their talent. I’m sure each actress, Marilyn Monroe included, had something special and unique about them that distinguished one from the other and marketing them as the same archetype seems so unfair and parasitic.

    There's also Dorothy Dandridge who was known as "the Black Marilyn Monroe" - although that title seems a little unfair considering that there are many who believe that Marilyn herself modeled some of her style on Dandridge's. The two had been friends starting in the late 1940's working together at the Actors Lab, and so its not impossible - I do see some similarity in Marilyn's look in - say - The Seven Year Itch or Bus Stop - and Dorothy's in Carmen Jones. And Dorothy's film career preceded Marilyn's by over seven years, with her first really big showcase being performing the Chattanooga Choo Choo number with the Nicholas Brothers in 1941's Sunset Valley Serenade (which was probably cut out of prints for southern audiences, but the number itself became a huge hit and Dorothy likely benefited from being able to share in that success). But Marilyn modeled her look and act on a lot of other women or actresses - among them Mae West, Jean Harlow, Marie Wilson, Betty Grable, and Lana Turner; just off the top of my head. But Dorothy was definitely marketed by Fox and later studios and press as some black version of Marilyn, even though she was very much her own thing - and of course they both died tragically

  • @spicytomango
    @spicytomango 2 ปีที่แล้ว +89

    The pressures of Hollywood were real dark back then. Marilyn would have loved to see the inspiration icon she turned out to be for everyone. Despite all she had been put through, she was still a compassionate and gentle soul. Her story deserved a much better ending

    Remember this..as a longtime fan of MM and many of these blondes.. The studios each worked for were encouraged to imitate her persona. Each of these ladies were not trying to be Marilyn’s personalities . It was an image not a lifestyle. Many of these talented women were not wanting to BE Her that’s stupid ! It’s all business in those days it was encouraged . Marilyn was older than all of them and she was quoted as thinking they were kids compared to her being adult. Marilyn created her persona and she too was accused of being Betty Grable. Diana Dors hated it and Diana was a fabulous actress. None of these actresses wanted what she had. Many were fans of Monroe. I know two of these ladies’ children and they recall instances that their mother’s triumph and struggle . Many of these ladies got out of the business too because they saw the treatment Marilyn went through . They all wanted to be actors not Marilyn the person. So to lump all together I’d like saying they wanted to all mob her or rob her of something . That’s bullshit ! Do your history reading more . Some of these ladies were not big losers in reality , to be told they suck because of a fan’s devotion to Marilyn . Read about these ladies before labeling , Diana Dors was bigger in the Uk and had an acting career that went beyond Marilyn’s resume . Jayne Mansfield was a terrific comedian and could act. She was hired by 20th Century Fox to imitate Marilyn’s created persona ..Sheree North too. Sheree North hated it and left Fox . It was an image on screen only not Marilyn’s lifestyle . I love Marilyn’s legacy and each of these ladies had just as equal talent and more so than Marilyn. It was never a boxing match . Marilyn was so damn good at what she portrayed and the Studio system was the sole , responsible reason why these actresses played a dumb blonde. Marilyn left Fox for New York to become more established as an actress . She was suspended ..that’s why Jayne and Sheree stepped in. Mamie loved Marilyn and never tried upstage anything . Mamie , Cleo Moore, Diana Dors… many saw the writing on the wall and said “ fuck it.” It was a business adventure ..Marilyn wanted out of it and proved she could do both. Jayne used what she had and was nothing like her character on screen but the public wanted her to be what she portrayed on screen. When Monroe died .. they all were stuck with an image and many broke free. Do your research before casting remarks. Many of these ladies featured in the video had successes off screen too that MM never achieved and forged their own path . They all wanted to become an actress.. many did. Again MM may not have liked the image being encouraged to rival her talents but, it was never the ladies totally responsible. None of these ladies wanted to steal anything . Read more about these women … anyone not aware of their history will understand . The public then and today cannot get enough of Marilyn’s legacy. Marilyn achieved some of the goals she set for herself and her acting abilities were wonderful and strong . It was all an image not their personal lives. If Marilyn would have settled for a dumb blonde role ..she would have gone nowhere. These ladies wanted to get away from the same. Many of these ladies were up against a male dominated system and were fighting to be seen , to show their own talents ….. Do your research before saying ignorant things . Nobody wanted to be Marilyn …they wanted to become actresses ..some didn’t make it, some left it and some were judged just because they wore blonde hair.

    There is, and there always will be, only one Marilyn. From Madonna to Kim Kardashian to Paris Hilton, women have all tried to achieve her level of fame, and they all have failed. No one from the USA can match her iconic status and probably no one ever will. There is only one other actress in history just as iconic as her: Audrey Hepburn.
