  • Wildcat at Lake Compounce is infamous for being one of the roughest wood coasters in the amusement park industry. But hope is on the horizon! Today, Lake Compounce announced Wildcat would be closed for the entire 2023 season for a major refurbishment. But what's happening? In this video, I explore the options and share what's most likely.

    I honestly wonder if the Dinn corporation messed up with the foundation work or something (they completely rebuilt it from the ground up), because if a wooden coaster is fully retracked that much, then it shouldn’t be as rough as it is, that hill after the first fan curve shouldn’t be as brutal as it is.

    Another option is RMC's 208 ReTraK, which is their answer to GCII's Titan Track. That would pretty much preserve the current layout and also allow them to use the current trains. I like Gravity Group's Precut Engineered Track to keep the old wood coasters wood. In the end, the rumors are probably true and it will get GCII's Titan Track with no changes to the layout. However, with Boulder Dash being so much younger, might they try a more intense element or 2 on it?

    Rode this last summer, was super rough, I do think a full gci retrack would be perfect, as it will keep the layout the same, likely with a few small profiling changes, and make the coaster worthwhile riding. I think the layout is great for the time it was built, and it still can hold up today as a mild thrill coaster, and would fit the park perfectly. I also do see an RMC in the park's future, but it would be a custom raptor over the lake.

That said, I'm wondering two things. If this is successful, will a similar thing happen to kennywood coasters in a few years? Two, Palace likes their package deals, like we've seen them do with zamperla and S&S, I wonder if a coaster is part of this deal, too. If so, maybe castle park will get a family woodie.

Plus from the little I know about compounce, they aren't trying to be a cedar fair or six flags park. These small, historic family style parks are a dyeing breed and I think they are worth preserving as much as possible. Having lost the one I had growing up because they tried to make something it wasn't, that is not a fun thing to see happen to somewhere that can mean so much to someone...But I would still want to go ride it if they did RMC, just to be clear.

    Well they got gravity group to retrack it, so - I hope they don't make the same mistake with Boulderdash. This needs titan track, that's the only cure. And Boulderdash must always remain a pure woodie with trackwork from GCI when needed. Edit, I didn't realise it was M&V that did it. My bad, thanks for that info. I have found GG coasters to be rough often even when new though. For me the pick is GCI.

    I see a GCI retrack with Titan Track in some of the more high-stress places.
    RMC'ing the thing is out of the question, given what happened to Blue Streak destroying another historic wooden coaster is a bad idea to say the least. I'm sure that there would be SEVERE BACKLASH to such a thing.
    I also feel this might apply to a complete Titan Track conversation as well, this is why I go with the GCI retrack with some Titan Track. It improves the ride, while not completely removing the wood track.

    I suspect the poor results of the previous refurb are the fault of the trains. Not Martin&Vlemix. The fact that the new trains have tighter restraints than the old ones results in the shimying being more uncomfortable. I have also heard differing reports about how much trackwork was actually done. As for what to do about it, if Lake Compounce wanted to respect the ride's history they never would've gotten rid of the buzbars. I suspect this refurb may bring back the old trains, as well as potentially testing the Millenium Flyers on Boulder Dash (can't imagine it would detract from the ride experience being that its PTCs aren't buzbars). Just my thoughts.

      @@CanobieCoaster The best illustration of it I see is "imagine if Leap The Dips had the lapbars of Millenium Flyers". The elements we LOVE as enthusiasts we might start hating. I hope I'm right about them returning the old trains with buzbars, as that would at least somewhat allow the ride to be experienced closer to its design and would also make it a much better ride. I remember in a video about the previous refurb it was stated that they got rid of the old trains because they were completely mechanical (ie no computer verification of bars being down for dispatch). Taking a year may be required to change that over.

    • @oblivieon1567
      @oblivieon1567 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I'll add what I do know. The track gauge on Millennium flyers and PTC trains are different. If you watch a POV closely you'll see the track is all over the place, sometimes to the right, sometimes to the left. My theory is the calculation of the centerline is off. I also remember someone asking about why we didn't see more Millennium Flyers on other coasters during the rehab of G-Rider at Knott's. GCI said something like it didn't work out well in the past without a full re-track. Which I think they were referring to this Wildcat and Hershey's Wildcat which both suffered from roughness albeit to varying degrees. GCI now has Infinity Flyers which is the same track gauge as PTC, they first used those on Roller Coaster at Lagoon which hasn't suffered from the same problems. So what I think GCI is going to do is run calculations on the entire ride then reprofile / retrack it properly and it'll be fine. Who knows if it'll be wood or Titan but either way I think it'll turn out great.

  • @georgeoliver4704
    @georgeoliver4704 ปีที่แล้ว

    I agree that they won't do an RMC treatment--it's too radical for a 1924 coaster, and frankly pointless if you're trying to maintain a historical look and ride. The other two options are probably almost equal. I trust both Gravity Group and GCI. Cost is usually the bottom line in business.

    • @CanobieCoaster

      @@CanobieCoaster "Objectively better" is very subjective. For many people who aren't thrill seekers, RMC's coasters can be too intense--I wish RMC would make more family-friendly layouts. Gravity Group is an expert at this mixed audience, and their trains are very comfortable. Personally, I'm a fan of older wooden coasters. RMC'ing every old coaster in sight is not my idea of progress.
