Dave, you are a marvelous storyteller, rich in detail and cultural ephemera, a little less circuitous this time, your narrative today like a car riding one smooth curve. You, rock God of my childhood, on whom I kept an amused eye in my "alternative" years, are now the podcast bard/jester/sensei of my middle years. Fun and fascinating. I was also a gaijin once, and I love your reverence for Japan and for the California melting pot. You will rock till your last day and beyond. Love this. Thanks.
Hummingbirds. Always loved them. When my sister Eva passed, hummingbirds kept coming up to me in my driveway, stopping and hovering and chattering in their little way. Now we have feeders, and if they empty, the little hummingbirds come hover in front of our face or outside a window and demand we fill those feeders, NOW. They also train their tiny babies to eat the tiny bugs off the plants......so cool.
Oh. My God, yes. You know. Small town Indiana life in the 1950s. :) And those opening scenes in 'Hoosiers' (along with that wonderfully nostalgia-inducing score) still grips my heart no matter how much I've seen it. Like a hug from my long gone GreatGrandma.
I've listened to hours and hours of DLR interviews going back to his beginnings. One thing I always loved about them is that he rarely swore, at least in all the ones I listened to. All these years later and here he is dropping f-bombs. It detracts from his sheer brilliance as a story teller.
David, YOU ARE AWESOME! This show is the BEST! I love hearing his stories of his childhood, NY EMT experiences etc.. Dave has such rich and robust experiences-I can listen to him all day. BTW, thank you for showing those gorgeous eyes. I listened to this show in its 1 hour entirety on iTunes and it's incredible. Love me some David Lee!!! Continued blessing to you Dave...
I recall playing in Corfu for a very short while every night a Saturday night every day a Sunday I used to crave Saturday nights As I got older I enjoyed the Sunday’s more I even discovered the other days of the week! Glad you found your place dude....
LMAO, another great story! Thank you for sharing. I've only been to NY once and its everything you said. First day culture shock, second day I hated it, third day I never wanted to leave.
I went in fall, to buy a house in Massepequa, but had a of business in the City. I hated the getting there, going under that river, I have massive claustrophobia due to freeway overpasses during an earthquake, ........sheesh, a river overhead, and the worst gridlock freeway traffic ever, UNDER a river..........then it snowed. It was so cold, even with socks, boots, two pairs of ski underclothing and jeans, shirts, sweater, and coat, hat, muffler.......in the car with HIGH heat on......it made San Francisco on a cold windy day feel HOT. We came home and kept our houses in Venice and Pasadena. AND on the plane home, it got hit by lightening and all the engines failed and it fell, straight down, I was not comfortable in elevators in tall buildings for years, but strangely, still flew.
I understand, after watching several of these, why some people don’t like this guy. He’s so f@#$ing smart that he has depth of knowledge and total recall, without inhibitions, is tiring. I’m sure you would get tired of being around him. The key to this guy is what he recalls and how he files it in his head, and presents it so perfectly...DEEPLY caring individual that captures “tough times” story. change the story you are living by shaking it up, others help. he respects tiny acts of sacrifice by others to survive, makes the person feel comfortable by relating a story of his to show normalcy, person laughs relaxes and he makes them feel better about their embarrassment or whatever. He talks too much, but he must also be a hell of a guy. I’m impressed he kept the values of his youth.
When you got thrown out of your house in high school, I was surely sad for you in that dump you were forced to live in, and then the house on Sierra Madre where you had to stay the next few years until you moved to the little cabin you rented from your Dad. You just crack me up.
Dave, are you learning some Japanese? You’d be great speaking Japanese because you enunciate so well. Say to her New York ikimasho!!!! What could be more wild than going to NYC with you. Omg !!!
