I won't lie... after Michael discovered the spider, I expected the video to cut to him buying a new x-wing on eBay and just being like "restoration complete."
***** That's not a dead spider, it's a molted spider exoskeleton. A pretty common mistake people make. They can't grow until they get their skin off and can then expand their bodies and allow their new exoskeleton to harden. The little guy probably found it to be a good hiding place away from predators to do his little striptease and safely wait for his new sheet to harden. Then wandered off.
Yea those 'droid spiders' were the secret weapon of the empire. They were deployed as a defensive measure, millions were released into space around the death star thus, creating a huge firewall. Once latched onto an x-wing they crawl their way into the spring mechanism and implode the fighter from the inside. Remnants of it's shell are usually lodged inside.
Awesome start to the restoration guys! My biggest problem when I restored my childhood X-wing was getting the wings to work right little did I know the wing release nub was glued to the spring! Thanks for the info and now I can't wait to reopen my X-wing and fix that part! Can't wait for part 2!
I'm not surprised at the condition of these 36 year old Star Wars toys, we played the hell out them, that's how we rolled back then!
I just picked up a nice X-wing, but it had terribly corroded batteries in it. I'm happy you had this video up. I hadn't really looked at it long enough to see how it came apart. Much easier than I expected. Thanks for sharing Michael!

Not sure if you know about this, but see my reply to Patrick Leonard below. Yellowing can be removed completely with 6% hydrogen peroxide, a glass container, and good old sunlight. I use this method all the time when restoring and vehicle parts.
My at at has yellow legs , will it work on those as well? Or will it turn them white instead of the grey I want ?

Followed your full X-Wing vid to the letter - and ended up with a totally restored, clear-cockpit-glass, white-as-can-be X-Wing with strong, working sound and light. Invaluable vid, thanks so much. My childhood X-Wing looks like a million bucks. :-) The R2 snap mechanism even works now, when I thought that had corroded or bit the dust. The wings don't stay spread very wide when you let go of R2's head after pressing/releasing, etc.,, but I think that probably has more to do with the aging plastic than anything else, as there aren't any cracks anywhere.
my brother just found my old x wing fighter though it desperately needs restoration hopefully my brother can give it new parts and stuff this video can be a good thing to watch for help fixing it :3
Soaking the screws in apple-cider-vinegar should remove the rust.

Additional information: I had taken apart my X-wing (and numerous POTF2 for customizing) two decades ago to repair the locking mechanism for the S-foils (R2's base cracked off, so I unscrewed and reversed it), and mine had the two screws holding the S-foil's to lower fuselage. I still had my brother's X-Wing that he got for his birthday on 9 April 1978 (which is in rougher shape with a broken wing, electronics frozen, missing parts and stickers), and so I took it apart to see what condition it was in and noticed that the S-foils had all FOUR SCREWS in place. He got his X-Wing first, and I probably got mine in May or June. So it looks like somewhere in between Kenner skimped and went with 2 screws. My brother's X-Wing has a stamping on the lower fuselage of "0338" while mine has a stamp of "1658" (production numbers?).

Nice to see the US version of the X-wing. In the UK it was released without the exlectronics. The seat is easy to remove, just pull it out of the peg holes. Should come out very neatly. I would guess the motor is held in the same way.
I remember taking my toys apart and putting them back together again.

I had a Millennium Falcon, an X-wing, Darth Vader's Tie Fighter, a Snowspeeder, and an AT-ST. Pretty sure my parents tossed them in the trash when I moved out. I went looking for them about ten years later and just got blank stares from mom and dad. 😥
Always wondered what 30 year old epoxy glue looked like...and I feel bad for that spider, wonder how long he's been decomposing in that x-wing, lol
For the old decal removal, I have found Purell hand sanitizer is great. It was the only thing that removed tree sap from my car, so I thought I'd try it on an old Falcon. Worked way better than Goo Gone.

theres always the poroxide treatment for yellowed peices. ive saved a few storm shadows and strorm troopers with it.
How do you do that?
Use masking tape and cover up any spots of colour that are in good shape, as they may discolour in this process.
get a plastic container (or any materiel container really) place the yellowed toy in it, and fill it up with hydrogen poroxide until the toy is half submerged. cover the top of the container with celotape (cling wrap) and tape seal it so its air tight as possible.
then leave it in the sun for a day.
seriously. it brightens it alll up.
this may need to be done for each side of the toy. maybe multiple times to.

I'd save the wings for kit-bashing purposes. As a Space Kid from the 70s, I grew up on Space:1999 and REAL Battlestar Galactica, and learned from the best--no matter how busted up, parts can always be used down the line..

Also I really like how the x-wing looked in the beginning of the video. I feel like i would have made a narrative to say why the ship looked like it did.
Maybe you go back and rewatch some of the original BSG. Pretty horrible.

the first time I took something apart was my crappy, cheap DVD player, I forgot to take a movie out when I turned it off, for some reason it broke so I borrowed my dad's tools and opened the thing up to retrieve the disc.
the dirty one looks more like an x-wing because in the movies they are more just slapped together
W40 for removing stickers residue, interesting. I mean, when I use W40, the product itself is so sticky. grease, that I never imagined it would be good for this. I think i'll give it a try, next time when I would need to remove some adhesive.
Retr0Brite would probably get the yellowing off... It could be a new part of your restoration toolkit.

Another great video, but I totally disagree that the wings weren't salvageable. I've restored quite a few (albeit Palitoys but the principle is the same) where the wings are cracked similar to this one. You do need a really strong glue and LOTS of patience, but there is a very good chance of success!
I prefer it a bit yellowed tbh, looks more movie accurate
I'm not sure what year my x-wings are from, but the release switch for the s-foils is held under tension with a rubber band. The rubber band loops beneath the back pegs that hold the seat in place and goes up and around the release button. Seems like a cheap fix to the problem.
I know i'm late to the game some what but have you tried peroxide cream ? 80's computer use it. Paint it on and set in the sun for the day. Rather than bleaching it reverses the yellowing. I used it on a Snow Base and it worked a treat we also use it on BMX skyway wheels
Thank you so much for the step-by-step video. My X-Wing is looking great. Cleaned off, electronics work (not at first, they didn't). I loved the dead spider inside yours in the video! Mine had a dead fly inside! Couple of questions: 1) Any advice for removing yellowing if your stickers are pretty intact? For mine yellowing/orange-ing is the biggest problem. The stickers look pretty good for their age. 2) Mine is certainly a white X-wing, but the locking mechanism (the switch and fitted space for it) for the wings looks like what you describe as from the "battle-damaged" version. Maybe they actually made the change in the middle of the production run? Either way its easy to "lock s-foils in attack position" but very difficult to unlock them. Oh well. Thanks again for your help!
On your restorations have you found any chems that hurt the plastic? I have had trouble with some glues before melting things.
Any chance we might see a vid on Buck Rogers (79-81), The A-Team, Knight Rider or the Dukes of Hazzard? These shows weren´t cartoons, but they shaped the kids of the 80´s just as much.
I was surprised the glue turned really gooey, shouldn't epoxy harden when it dries? Anyway, I also love these restoration videos as we can see how Kenner's engineers basically use the same motor and lights system in various configurations among the ships.
Yes... that either 1) wasn't epoxy and the donor or him mom were mistaken, or 2) it was incorrectly mixed and never cured properly...

I spray painted mine flat grey. :\ What would you recommend for gluing the wings back together, they're broke near the middle.
can you use some JB weld or something to fix those wings? sure, it may not hold up to play, but for display and restoration purposes, would that or another concoction work without replacement?
Hey there. Love your videos. I recently acquired a Kenner X-Wing Fighter. I've been wanting to clean it up and possibly restore it, however, I cannot get the two screws out of the tail end. I think the plastic is stripped. Any advise on how to remove them without damaging the fuselage? Thanks.
this is off topic but i wonder are there many major differences to the original x-wing vs. the battle damaged one,besides the different coloring and of course the battle damage stickers?
This was a great video on helping me restore my xwing, but I’m stuck. The blue button release for the wings looks different on mine. Rather than a spring vertical underneath, the spring is horizontal on the side. I can’t figure out how to use the button to release once the sfoils are open. The button get stuck. Any advice on how to remedy this?
Not knocking WD-40 as I've never used it for sticker removal but I would like to suggest good ol lighter fluid. It's pretty much like magic for removing stickers and gummy residue. Plus it doesn't have the oder of WD-40. Keep up the good work.
Lighter fluid doesn't have odor??? HAHA! I beg to differ. I have both at my disposal and I opt for WD-40 for basic work because it has less of an odor AND it doesn't burn my skin with prolonged contact.
Plain old rubbing alcohol works best. Non-toxic and quick evaporating.

Michael, your first experience was disassembling an X-Wing... Mine was the Imperial Troop Transporter... So, One question.... Were you ever able to put your X-Wing back together?
I did manage to put my Troop Transporter back together - But it never sounded the same! LOL!

Hey Patrick, order some 6% hydrogen peroxide from Amazon, and submerge all parts in it, in a glass container. Place the container in direct sunlight, and the plastic will bleach out like new in 5-7 days. This works well for figures as well.
This is probably a really stupid question, but could you use diluted bleach to repair discolouration on white plastic?
my x-wing needs new electronics as the terminal in the bottom of the body are so far gone that the no longer carry the voltage. Mine is also missing the canopy, one of the guns, and the front landing gear is broken. suggestions where to locate said parts?

are 1995 power of force X-Wing parts compatible with original 1978 X-Wing? Both models look very similar
the power of the force lines are made from the same molds as the vinatge stuff, so im sure theyre compatible

Just bought a 95 version of the Xwing and I cant even get it to come apart. The nose is off, the end cap battery cover piece is off and I have removed a total of 4 screws, any input? The reason for me taking this apart is the electronics aren't working.
melton wilson There's a screw in front of R2, two screws at the back of the ship and one under the nose. Is it glued together? It should just split apart lengthwise.
I got it new in box, shouldnt be glued.

This is a restoration of a Kenner X-Wing, not a custom X-Wing. That was the look of the original Kenner stickers, so that's what we're going with. Call it Red 3 if you want, but check out the Kenner box art. That's Luke Skywalker there.

Never said Luke wasn't Red 5. Kenner made this design. That's what we restored, so that's what we made. We could have customized stickers, but that wasn't the goal here.

It's so funny how some of the vehicles like the original A-Wing and B-Wing look pretty close to the movie models and the most popular one "X-Wing imo" looks like a fat distorted piece of junk. I hate Kenner with a passion lol
Why did you skip the process on how to remove the electronics? How did you bleach the bottom half of the fuselage without damaging the motor and electronics? YOU SKIPPED THAT PART ENTIRELY!
Miguel Sandoval Miguel - First, I need you to calm down. There's no cause to yell at me. Second, as I stated in the video, you CAN'T remove the electronics, so I didn't leave anything out as you claim. Third - The retrobrite is a gel solution that I used only ON THE OUTSIDE of the lower fuselage. It was not necessary to expose either the inside or the electronics to the solution.

Miguel Sandoval We copiously outline the RetroBrite process in the second part of this series. You really need to be careful before throwing out words like "failed" until you've done your homework.
The video was a bit long and it seems I skipped over that process you mentioned. It would be helpful if you can "List" the Retrobrite recipe you mixed together in addition to your explanation.
