I heard straight from Brown Mark's mouth on an interview with the Prince Podcast.....that Prince came to the studio at Paisley Park while he was producing Maserati album, with a demo of Kiss and gave it to him and asked what did he think about it, he then told Prince that he didn't like the song and thought it was crap bc it was an acoustic bluesy song along with a slow tempo and that he wanted more up-tempo dance songs on the album. Prince then told him that he could re-work the song and him and Maserati ended up with this version of Kiss. Brown Mark hands this version over to Prince and tells Prince that they were leaving for lunch. He then says that he comes back about 3 or 4 hours later and Prince reworked his instrumentals but it still basically Brown Mark version from the Maserati demo and he changed the vocals to also. Brown Mark tells Prince that he thought he had given them the song and Prince says naw I'll think I will keep it for myself, but promised him writing credits, according to Brown Mark, Prince told him "u know I'm going to take care of u". Well he didn't get co-writer's credit, producer's credit.....no royalties, nada. He went on to say that "that was the stick that broke the camel's back", and cause him to quit.
In the Prince Podcast interview, Mark Brown claims Prince flew him to Minni a year before he passed to look into his new project 3rdEyeGirl. Well, despite all that you have said, it seems everyone associated with him didn't deserve to be paid. I know Prince was responsible for The Time, but being nasty and not letting them use their original name is a sign of a highly insecure person. wow, the main body of the song was entirely there already! thanks a lot for digging this, I had no idea Prince started from such a fully-formed version. The drum machine doesn't seem having been touched a bit! It's nice Mazarati can get more credit for their songwriting skill on this great piece
Oh man!!! I'm really glad Prince ripped this back out of their hands and finished it right. Wouldn't have gone anywhere in this version. Prince always knew what he was doing, that's for sure. If I were Mazarati I'd be happy with my role in making this and leave it at that. Thanks for uploading though -I've always wondered what it sounded like before Prince took over.
johnnyribcage1 did you ever hear Dance Electric before Prince gave it to Andre Cymone? ... the finished product sounds like Cymone just recorded his voice on top of Prince's. 🤷
Same song different take, but lets remember Prince gave them just a bare guitar track w/ lyrics while Mazz made it into their very own and for that Prince should have have at least gave them Co Writer Credits
I'm so glad that Prince took this song back because this song would have went nowhere had Mazarati kept it for their album and I love Mazarati by the way. The fact that Prince took this song back and put his falsetto on it was GENIUS.....
He provided Mazarati with the melody, basic song structure and lyrics. Then took this version and removed the bass line, added signature guitar elements and falsetto, and stripped out the fat, creating a unique, minimalist, funky piece. It was a hard sell to Warner, they thought his finished Kiss sounded like a demo, and how many #1s have no bass? Prince fought for it and won.
Well in all fairness, the song was going nowhere before the rework by mazarati and David Z. The arrangement defines the song. To me, Mazarati and most likely David Z. MADE the hit. Prince sang it.

What I like about this demo is the emphasis on the handclaps and snare. They have some type of reverb going which would’ve sounded funky AF on Prince’s version.
having listened to the original one verse acoustic rough that Prince passed on to David Z, I would say David's engineered version with that high hat and guitar intersecting and the three note "ah ah ah" as a catch backing vocal is the bit that gets you hooked....musically. Prince's vocal styling took the song to certified "wow" status. Because it was all such unconventional but in some ways familiar soundscaping.
I can't believe nobody here realized that Prince removed the bass line. When doves cry style! As everyone pointed out he also put his guitar and falsetto but the most important part is that he COMPOSED, PRODUCED AND ARRANGED the song! That's why his version is a major hit and mazarati's is a youtube video with 5000 views.
Leandro do you know what 'ARRANGED' means? The arrangement is Mazerati's. And I hope they got money for it. Look at it this way - if, a few years ago, you made a rough demo, and Prince took it and completely transformed the way it sounded, and you took it back and it was a huge hit - Prince would have been PAID, baby 🙂
No, it's because Prince took the track back before it was developed. This is a DEMO, not a finished version. You can't say with certainty what may or may not have happened with the track because it was never released as a finished Mazarati product. You're correct that Prince wrote the original track, but if you know anything about music you'd know that there are numerous songs songs that are taken from scratch ideas and fully developed for the artist all the way through that become hits for that artist alone. One could argue that Mazarati had the rug pulled out from them before they had a chance to truly make the song their "own." Prince wrote "The Glamorous Life" for Sheila E., BUT she's more well known for the performance of the track because Prince never took the song back.
Andy Dodds David Z 'arranged' and received credit. Prince further arranged, by stripping the song down to its funky bones and adding signature guitar and vocal elements. My guess is that this version would not have been a hit.

Brown Mark is inhibited by his own sense of inability to have succeeded as Prince. He is not aware of how that is so prevalent in all his conversations about Prince. The lyrics are kind of clunky, but Prince had a way of singing around that by making the hops and pauses sound like funky breaks and doing these falsetto leaps where the scansion in the written verse is weak. Take the line "You don't have to watch 'Dynasty'/to have an attitude.' Here it's flatly delivered, and feels off, maybe because we can hear Prince accelerate and elevate the way he sings the line. But the rest is the same!!
Prince knew what he was doing!!! :)
John PRTZ he didn't hear the potential of this track until he heard MAZ's trick....then he was like..."it is..My SONG" (that's a verbatim quote about it from the Peeps involved)
The original reference by Prince, prior to this version, was more jazzy... mazarati funked it up... prince took it back and worked on it w/ Tony Christian of Mazarati, the result was prince’s Kiss.

The song would not have been a hit without Prince's melody, song structure, lyrics, and arrangement -- after Maz turned in a hum drum tune, Prince stripped off the bass and other non-essentials, added signature guitar and falsetto.
This is completely false because Prince formed 3rdEyeGirl in 2012 and bassist Ida Nielsen had been playing with him since 2010. So Mark is lying. Here is Prince's original demo, with melody, lyrics and basic song structure - th-cam.com/video/XXMGp_7vl8w/w-d-xo.html
Prince gave the demo to producer David Z whose creative input (the funky intro) he retained on the finished song, and gave him credit. The only contribution of Brown's on the finished song are his background vocals.

The Time still can't use the name The Time, Girls & Boys had a lot of contribution from Brown but no one will believe because now Prince is dead and everyone is taking advantage of him. But there are evidence and witnesses who will testify and have testified all you gotta do is dig deep, listen to more interviews and you will know. Ah okay, is that why Mark lied about Prince wanting him to join his new band 3rdEyeGirl in 2015? Because bassist Ida Nielson was with Prince from 2010 in the NPG and 3rdEyeGirl formed years prior.
.
The Time was Prince -- he was even leasing (paying for) the name. Motown ended up calling Prince for songs because Brown wasn't cutting the mustard. And no self respecting pro musician would 'retire' after a few years in the game -- Mark retired in 1992. Prince's 40 year career speaks for itself.

www.billboard.com/articles/columns/pop/7348342/jimmy-jam-remembers-prince

My guess is that you probably don't work... this is why you don't understand the concept of working for a boss -- and Mark's boss was Prince -- he didn't even have a contract with Warner Bros.
Well, despite all that you have said, it seems everyone associated with him didn't deserve to be paid. I know Prince was responsible for The Time, but being nasty and not letting them use their original name is a sign of a highly insecure person. And as far as Mark's situation goes, he had personal demons that resulted in him retiring and working at a optic fiber cable company. If he had gotten his credit on Kiss, probably he won't have been broke. Everyone should do their duty and I am sorry to say Prince deprived a lot of people of their dues. This is the same shit that James Brown used to pull on his band mates. But an icon is never wrong. Why? Because he is simply an icon, and icons are not allowed to make mistakes or be nasty. Even if they do, they can do it because they have the power.
@@gautamdevgun333 The Time was Prince's intellectual property -- actually Warner Bros.' intellectual property. When we quit our jobs, we don't get to take the company's assets. Mind telling me how Brown was able to retire in 1992 if he wasn't getting paid? Most of us have to work until age 65... and in jobs a whole lot less funky. Mark left Prince in 1986 -- it is currently 2021. How do you pay your bills?

He provided Mazarati with the melody, basic song structure and lyrics. Then took this version and removed the bass line, added signature guitar elements and falsetto, and stripped out the fat, creating a unique, minimalist, funky piece. Uhhhhhh, Neva heard, blessed be the fuckin net
having listened to the original one verse acoustic rough that Prince passed on to David Z, I would say David's engineered version with that high hat and guitar intersecting and the three note "ah ah ah" as a catch backing vocal is the bit that gets you hooked....musically.
It seems a little slow in comparison with Prince's version. I agree on your guess. They gave Prince the idea, he worked it out brilliantly. They both deserve credit imho

did prince write this WHOLE song or just the first verse and chorus he did in the demo for them? Otherwise they filled out the rest of the song.
Though Prince made the music and gave it to this band, they arranged the vocals for it which, in my opinion as a songwriter, is the most difficult part . . . and which is probably what gave Prince the inspiration to take this song back. Like many other commenters on this clip, I'm am glad that Prince took this back, but it was kind of a douche bag move on his part.

Brown Mark is inhibited by his own sense of inability to have succeeded as Prince. He is not aware of how that is so prevalent in all his conversations about Prince. Prince put him on the map and that bites. Kiss is an example. The song he worked on was written by Prince and he did some rearranging of the music. This version we are listening to now has no musicality or energy and is flat. The song never be No1. Prince took it back ( it was his) and brought it to life. His video was a winner with his energy and sass to Wendy, putting fun into the song. Sorry Mark but your attitude of being taken down by Prince sucks.
Now I see why Prince took the song back. The lead vocals are too “stiff.” Prince’s vocals are more fluid and soulful.
Maybe there are a couple syllables too many in the line as written, but when Prince was singing it, who really noticed or cared?
They got shafted. Love Prince but he kinda robbed them.
These bass sounds early 80s too old for 1986..but kiss is a good song in both forms
