I was born and raised in Chicago, but after working 12 years in the financial Industry regulating the futures and options markets at the CME/CBOT I decided to pursue my passion fishing professional tournaments and left my full time corporate job. At that point, I moved to Junction City, WI with my wife Sara and two boys Hank and Duke. I've been fishing professionally since 2011 and full-time since 2015. I've qualified for seven MLF Championships and won over a half million in tournament winnings at the professional level.
Before we get to the fall buzz bait bite, would love a lesson how to tune a buzzbait and keep it running straight. Mine always want to run on their side or curve toward me and I just can't get them right
Good idea!
I was on the water yesterday afternoon. I tried a Pop-R and got nothing. But a spinnerbait burned just under the surface got some attention. Jerk bait was totally ignored. And lastly, a small square bill just above the weeds got hit pretty hard.
Thanks for sharing
I literally just got back from fishing on one of our local highland reservoirs in the last hour. Topwater was great this afternoon. Chug Bug was working really well. I had a cane walker tied on but didn’t use it.
Sounds like fun
I was thorwin a jitter bug the other day & it was crazy fun like the video with Todd as always great info
Thanks 👍
The vixen is my favorite full sized walking bait too! Wish the old small ones were not too expensive to fish with!
agreed
That's a rough looking windburn, Matt buddy!🥵 I get windburned and sunburned the same way.
Sorry to hear that
Matt, what is the best method tie to the topwater lure ( popper, walking bait)?
1.directly with no split ring
2. tie to the split ring
3. use a snap and no split ring
4. use a snap and a split ring
Depends on the bait
Direct to the buzz bait or frog, snap to split ring on plopper or walking bait, snap no split ring on popper or torpedo. Sometimes I tie a heavy snap for big frogs. That's how I get the best actions from those lures.
Great video, Matt. What colors do you use and when? Thanks again for the awesome information. Good luck going forward.
I like the blacks and bone colors
Record high temps for the time of year in my neck of the woods. Walking bait was destroying the smallies right under the midday sun.
Awesome
Lol!!! 1:06 Matt you dodo lake break downs!!!! The kid voice in my head is cracking up😂😂😂😂😂
Haha
Top water bite is great year round in Georgia.... But it's on fire from mid spring to late fall.
Love it!
Love the topwater bite. Great content Matt thanks for the info and tips bud 👍🏻🎣
You bet
My topwater selection is absolutely stella. They work almost all season, except like Winter in deep lakes. Vixen has a lot of flaws.
Let’s hear which ones!
Qualified for our local Natural State Kayak Classic coming up in a couple of weeks. Day 1 on Table Rock day 2 on Beaver . The Choppo will definitely be seeing some action. Hopefully, the fish will agree to my choices.
That sounds like fun!
Matt,
Do anglers fish a buzz bait on lakes that are dominated by spotted bass? The tackle stores where I live don't stock buzz baits..
Yes!
Great info and how do you find time for garage sales🤷🏻♂️😜 that Bomber was a Score at any price 😮😂
Haha i love garage sales
Matt, I have probably caught over a thousand LM bass on the Bomber Long A (3-hooks). I'm 71 and have been throwing the long A since it came out. I have never used it as a wake bait. I use it as a floating minnow bait. It's deadly in the spring for pre spawn bass. I use it spring, summer & fall. There are times when it will out fish a walking bait. The old baits are better than the new ones in my opinion. The new ones still work pretty good. Great videos
Dang!!!
We used to slay LM, SM, walleye, and hybrids slow rolling one at night.
i would take the middle hook off and/or put slightly smaller, lighter gauge hooks/split rings on the front and rear to add some buoyancy. If you are REAL dedicated and have a steady hand take a flat file to the bottom of the lip and remove a little. Not much and keep it square/level. The long A was one of the original legendary wake baits and dang good at it. Smaller hooks are plenty as long as you are using 8-12lb line and some gamas or owners give you fewer "misses" with good sticky hooks. Especially versus those silver saltwater type hooks on many models.
You can also go the other way with heavy hooks and some lead wire wrap or stickytape and use it as a jerkbait.
I like to use a jitterbug, it covers a lot of water and it makes a really good wake. Joe
I like them too!
I placed 3rd at a local tourney last weekend throwing a Teeny Pop-R (the P50) around busting schools of perch. Was the opposite of using big baits, the only thing they would hit on top was this small slow presentation. The problem was those hooks are ridiculously small. My landing percentage was brutal on these 4-lb smallmouth. Any tips on landing more fish on those small trebles? I'm afraid to upsize em as then the bait wont float quite the same anymore.
awesome!
Love this channel , very informative, this is one of the best channels
thanks!
Thanks as always, Matt. Great to hear Bomber Long A get some love. Still have a handful. Location question: will be fishing in your back yard next week, as far as location: main river shoreline or more "backwater"? Targeting more brown fish, but happy with green ones too! Bear Down!
Bear down!
The choppo has absolutely carried me all summer long and I've caught all my PBs on it as well as some muskies but lately my lake has dropped a lot and bite has cut completely off...idk why but I guess the water level dropping so suddenly may have screwed it up but my honey hole has went to complete s**t the past few weeks.
It’s a good one
You forget fleeing imitation and creature imitation.
Thanks for watching
Down here central Florida mid February the topwater bite is unreal my favorite is a Sammy in the 4" size 👍
awesome!
Really like the J-walker 100 with only two hooks. Love the videos.
Thanks
Im kind of shocked the frog didnt make your list... outside of the spring, I've had some of my best frog fishing days ever during this time of year all the way until water temps are around the high 50's down here in the East Texas area.... Still great bait picks and video as always keepem coming man!!!
It can be good but it’s situational
Top water rocks . I try not to get into the 3 hook walking baits prefer 2 hook. Just my opion. Buzz is definitely an option in fall months. Thanks for posting this video today.
Right on
Good to see you and that meathead Castledine got it all patched.😂😂😂 Just kidding both of y'all make the best content. Always rooting for you bro.
Thanks 👍
Falling water temps ... lol. Water here was 83 deg yesterday ... 👽🦖
Oh wow!
Baits I have tied on right now no matter what
1) tekel kicknocker
2)tekel maxqueaker
3) OSP Daibuzzin heavy hitter
4) evergreen combat rat
good ones!
@@MattStefanFishing yes they are all part of my fall arsenal. I just want to thank you for all the great information you share with us, it’s really helped elevate my fishing. Tight lines
Matt, how about the Z-Man Hellraizer?
You introduced it to us awhile back.
Do you use it? Had success with it?
On a 1-10 scale, how would you rate it?
i love using it but have had limited success.
When throwing topwater, walking baits, or say the Chapo, do you have a color preference or are there colors that are better in certain conditions versus others?
depends on the conditions
I’ve been watching you for about six months now you seem like a good dude I like watching your content. More important,Is that a Bears sweatshirt you’re wearing????
Agree would like your thoughts on color selection, water clarity and weather conditions, sunny vs overcast.
Good video Matt 🤛
Thanks 👍
Matt what hook are you using on your vixens? I tried the owner st36's and they bent out way to easy.
I use stock
Are big poppers musthaves? Are small ones? A lot of swimbaits are actually swimbaits by retrieve. Lol.
Yes yes and yes
Da Bears!
Bear down!
I've been slaying them with a fluke
Love the fluke!
@@MattStefanFishing I find that about the 3rd time it touches down whenever I skip it where I know a bass is laying is almost like magic.
I want the all black VIxen! Cannot find it anywhere, know where I can find one? Thanks!
Ebay has some for $140 each.
@@charlespoling3331 HOLY SHIT! Nevermind. I refuse to pay more than $20 for a lure. My most expensive lure is $45 and I don't even like it because it won't get bites ANYWHERE ANYTIME.
Thanks for looking out brotha'.
It was a limited run
🍺🤠. Thanks.
Any time!
Hey Matt, maybe its the camera but you look like you have gotten a lot of sun on your face. Take it from an old dude, you really need to use sunscreen or a buff and keep that sun off your face, skin cancer is no good at all. I enjoyed the video as always but protect that skin.
i do protect it ever since my skin cancer issue. This was more wind burn than anything.
Thank you Tom Bishop
HA you said doo doo.
Haha
👍👍👍👍👍
thanks for watching
You definitely do not need T.C. I absolutely can't stand that dude. Is ego is out of control and he completely runs his mouth. Not telling you what to do just my opinion. It just popped up today not subscribed.
Haha he’s entertaining
