Little more fond memories of the bluefish eating after this trip. I've always found other fish to be much better at the table but this wasn't bad. This was one of the more tough trips. Have learned a bit more about kings, spinner sharks and all that stuff since...but nothing is better than putting in some time and scratching your head! Some really good footage coming this week. Also shads are on their way. The late April volume was surprising (and overwhelming). I hope not to run out of stock so hard for the rest of the season.
When I was living in Florida, people used to catch sheepshead all day on the jetties. They seemed to like the structure, and people used sea urchins for bait. They would pull them off of the undersides of the jetty rocks, crack them open, and hook them up. More fish than you could want. Whenever we cooked up blue claws here in NJ, we used beer. Whatever cheap stuff was available (usually Budweiser; not much good for drinking anyway) with enough Old Bay to cover the surface of the liquid. Bring it to a boil, throw crabs in, and cover until they were done. Delicious, and really clears out the sinuses.
Every episode I LOVE that the water is familiar. Incredible move for your channel. Plus I'm a salty googan... I can see what is possible in the water I fish.
I catch and eat a lot of Bluefish. Here in SA we call them Shad or Elf. You HAVE to bleed them as soon as you catch them for best results. Cut the neck and then break it by bending the head back. Then gut it. After you gut it run your finger hard against its back bone this forces more blood out the bloodline. Do this as soon as you can and preferably at the beach.
You can season a fish however you like but try throwing a little dill weed in with the seasoning too....it's surprising how well dill complements fish. Thanks for the vids Elias, great stuff!
I really don't get why a lot of Americans think Bluefish are bad eating, here in Australia Tailor (Bluefish) are probably one of the most common fish targetted and eaten, and every time I've eaten them they've tasted awesome. All you do is bleed them as soon as you get them out of the water, chuck them on ice, and cook them the same day (or ideally, within a few hours) of catching them. Who knows, maybe the bluefish across the pond taste different to the ones here in Australia, because us Aussies eat them like they're going out of style.
Sounds exactly like our Pacific bonito lol. Not the Bonito in florida but the true bonito.Their flesh goes bad really easily if not put on ice and bled.
I know I'm 5 years late but I'm here regardless!! If you wanna help with bluefish smell I do a small rub down with soy sauce and salt when I have it sit and it nullified the "fishyness" much love man!
Down here in Brazil Bluefish is considered a very good fish to eat and is fary expensive though.Very popular on japanese dishes, but I agree that it depends on how you cook it. I like it grilled like barbeque with salt and pepper only. Put a little bit of soy sauce, than that is just about it. Can´t get any better that that imo. Weird that you do trashy fish Catch clean and cook, but in fac the majority of what you guys considered trash fish are not considered trashy here as well. Love the vids, keep them up!
Love watching your videos always informative. Have bought some of your rigs from J&H and Amazon. Kinda sad that I will not get any more tips for northeast fishing.
I grew up eating blue fish and I loved them! Haven't had one in a long time, unfortunately haven't been able to fish the ocean or Bay or serve as much as I'd like. I'm going out this weekend and hopefully I can catch some and try them again!
In the Chesapeake the limit is 9 inches and if I find a school of them around that size I keep some. I smoke them and make dip and it's awfully good. Can't freeze bluefish ever but smoked it's nice! The smaller the better for sure!
Bluefish is surprisingly good imo and it’s in how you prepare it. No crazy seasonings or soaking it in crap. Has to be eaten fresh though. Immediately bleed the the fish when caught, do not freeze the fish because bluefish meat don’t hold up well in the freezer... this will cause the oils from the dark meat to seep into the rest of the meat and give it that “taste”. Cut away all the dark meat as best as you can. Salt & pepper and pan fry in a little oil. The meat was white and flaky which surprised the hell out of me. Again it’s preferred to be eaten fresh or the day of. Now I’ve had smoked bluefish before and it was phenomenal. Smoked is the way to go honestly.
Yeah I have been so confused on why so many people saying that blue fish is a nasty fish!? I've grown up eating it and have always loved it! Definitely I've always ate it fresh, killed it and kept it on ice also. Definitely cut away the dark meat also. And wow I've never seen somebody cook crabs like that
I've served a lot of bluefish to folks who did not believe it was bluefish. As you folks mention, fairly small, bleed them, on ice right away, trim off the blood line. Dusted lightly in seasoned flour, pan fried in butter is very good. Smoked fillets, skin on is fantastic. These can be up to 6-7 pounds or more, and still taste excellent.
That’s the perfect size blue and the only way I cook them. The sauce looks great, I’m going to try that next time with my fish. Crabs are always a nice side. Keep em comin’ ..
You made Mario proud with that one. You didn’t give the frying fish the Mario wiggle though! Looked great bud. Keep it up! Ps. The wink at the very end had me loling
If memory serves, you're moving to Wilmington? If you get a chance, you should head towards the piedmont once or twice and try for some of the massive catfish in the reservoirs. It's not unheard of for the them to be up towards 100 or so pounds, give or take.
We had a ton of luck using a BWC Spanish Daisy on Saturday. We had 3 lines out, and it caught about half of our fish. Trolling about 6mph. I imagine you can get pretty close to that on the hobie.
You probably didn't do the drum any favor by cooking it next to the oily blue but I'm no expert. Blues are good enough and plentiful they just have to be fresh. Bluefish is much better than no fish. Thx for sharing!
Deeper bridges is where the sheepshead are. Never hear of many caught on ocean reefs in NC. Fiddler crabs for bait. The sheeps are still moving into the area tho.
if im keeping fish in the fridge overnight or longer, I ALWAYS put them in a tub full of equal parts ice chips and water. it lets them bleed out any remaining blood, firms up the meat, and keeps them extra cold and fresh. I've kept bass, crappie, and pickerel this way for up to a week. I wouldn't go that long with saltwater fish.
I'm from new england alot of bluefish eating. Snappers are good anyway you cook them. For the bigger ones fillet with skin on, brine overnight, and smoke with mesquite wood. Tastes like fish bacon
Try putting marinated Bluefish fillets in a slow smoker. Because they tend to be oily they will stand up to a longer smoking time without getting too dry. The smokey favor compliments them well.
how do you rig for small blues if they only go after live/dead shiners ? they bite off any line after the hook (when I put metal leader, they dont bite)
Hi Elias , I am trying to find a video of yours you posted of your truck and the Thule rack with hullivators .... I am looking for a set of hullivators and wanted to see how they were mounted to your Thule truck rack .. I have an older track rac I was hoping to mount the hullivator on ... I am curious if it mounts in the middle of the channel like the slot that’s in the rac ? The Thule truck rack has the same slot so I think it may work but I figured I would check in and ask you for your help Great videos btw I watch all of them !good work !
Hey just a small question will you add pink to your EliasV shads and maybe a chartreuse tail to the white one I fell they are the only colors missing let me know what you think thank you
I have eaten a 15 lb bluefish and it tasted pretty good. All we did was marinate it and grill it I just don’t know what it is. Also, the snapper blues are usually pretty good. I fry the little fillets coated with egg and bread crumbs
Nice one man! But you are putting a black drum and crab next to a bluefish! ! ? Lol. Black drum is one of the most sought after fish in many countries! Still, you said "not bad," so that on it's own is saying a lot for someone who hates blues. Good one bro. Thanks for this catch and cook and better luck next time.
around here we call 'em Tailor, around 30cm-50cm is great eating. best eaten fresh, they should ideally be Bled on capture and placed on ice they can spoil rapidly and don't keep too well in the freezer (flesh goes to mush)
Bluefish is delicious. Here in Australia we call them ' tailor '. The secret is - THEY MUST BE BLED ON CAPTURE. Otherwise they are disgusting . Try it and you will see! They also smoke BEAUTIFULLY
I guess you are new to riding the Big Yellow shark lure? What are you going to do when that hammerhead come in for the catch n eat reveiw? What your defense?
As you can tell by all the comments...many people have eaten and love blues, myself included. Always eat them fresh. 12”-15” best size. No need to bleed. Fillet, leave skin on, cut bloodline out and fry in vegetable oil. Use yellow corn meal for breader then salt right after you take out of pan. If eaten other varieties make sure to eat blue last. If you eat blue before other variety you will not be able to taste that fish.
I tried a salt brine for a couple hours then I used a light barbecue seasoning that was originally intended for chicken. Worked out really nice. Bluefish need to be grilled or at least cooked on a rack to taste good. Otherwise they will sit and fry in their own disgusting oils. I season them like I mentioned above and cook them on the grill. I either put them straight on the grate or I fill a tin roasting pan with water and make a bed of apple wood twigs. I set the fillets on the sticks above the water and sort of steam them. It turns trash into treasure
Hey didn't you do a catch and cook pikeminnow? I thought you did but I can't seem to find it.. It turns out we have local Sacramento Pikeminnow (Squawfish) and someone was asking how to cook them and I was going to refer them to your video.
So I'm late to the party. My Grandmother always liked to make Bluefish into Pate. Sometimes smoked. Grandfather and I would flop them onto the Avalon Pier, cut their tail and gills to bleed. Always very tasty however Grandmother prepared bluefish. I've never eaten it your way. I'm gonna try it out in the future.
Filet your bluefish , remove ALL red meat, put the filets in boiling water until done. Put the meat in a colunder to drain and fluff. Prepare the meat as if you were making crab cakes, don't forget the Old Bay seasoning. You'll be surprised.
Dominique D you want real blue crabs you have to come to Maryland. They just don't taste the same from anywhere else in the country and where known for our blue crabs. Something with the Chesapeake Bay just makes them taste better for some reason. Not sure if it's what their eating out here or what but there is a big difference. Catching them we either use a Trott line or collapsible crab traps or baskets. Usually in 4 to 9 10 feet of water once the water gets warm enough. It depends on what river your on to a point too. As far as bait you can use just about anything. Alot of people use fresh raw chicken. Razor clams work really well too as does salted eel, or any bait fish like perch Alewive's shad. Bluegill. Pretty much anything there's no regulations on by DNR.
I didn't realize you were in Virginia. There's alot of people from Florida and Georgia. Louisiana etc on here as well and they get blue crabs down there too but their not the same. Up here you pretty much have to have a boat to get them. At least to catch any decent numbers of them anyway. On the Western side of the bay all the rivers are shallow but wide and the crabs usually run somewhere between 4 and 10 feet through most of the season anyway. Shore access is pretty limited up here and most areas get fished and Crabbed very heavily all season so again a boat is sort of a necessary thing to have. Your not allowed to use the big commercial crab pots up here either unless you have a commercial license. You have to use the little collapsible snatch em up pots. That only hold 1 crab at a time. You have to actively fish them as opposed to leaving them in the water overnight. But if you have a decent small boat and run your limit of 30 pots you can catch a bushel plus within 3 or 4 hours. Or run Trott line.
For the folks saying they can't believe I don't like bluefish. I am one of those fish lovers, who when I complain say it taste too fishy. Another fish I never liked was King Mackerel, but to my surprise I got a great recipe i loved. Take a large King and steak him. make a marinade with frozen orange juice concentrate, whole can, add two large table spoons of mayo tea spoon of worcestershire sauce. Put on grill and do both sides 4 to 6 minutes depending on size of fish. you do need to brush continually, It was an awesome meal. Lol, maybe I should try it on a big bluefish.

EliasVFishing I thought black drum were loaded with worms?
Nah small ones aren’t. Anything over 25” probably starts getting a few.
EliasVFishing
which camera are you using im trying to purchase 1 now but dont no which one to get .. any recommendations
EliasVFishing in North Carolina we call them sea mullet instead of whiting
Thanks for the tip!
Dude you're catch and cooks get me so pumped to fish. Keep up the great work! Also gotta show some love to a fellow New York fisherman!
When I was living in Florida, people used to catch sheepshead all day on the jetties. They seemed to like the structure, and people used sea urchins for bait. They would pull them off of the undersides of the jetty rocks, crack them open, and hook them up. More fish than you could want.

Cool vid! Happy you are digging the new digs! And finally HAPPY you switched to the good-side, a happy Bluefish eating fan! Good to have you on-board.
I like when shows like yours catch and cook. AWESOME.
I catch and eat a lot of Bluefish. Here in SA we call them Shad or Elf. You HAVE to bleed them as soon as you catch them for best results. Cut the neck and then break it by bending the head back. when you say SA whats that mean south australia? if so im awesome for figuring it out
Awesome video as per usual. Thanks for the presentation and learning experience. Great job with the catch clean and cook.
You can season a fish however you like but try throwing a little dill weed in with the seasoning too....it's surprising how well dill complements fish. Thanks for the vids Elias, great stuff!
Love your catch and cook videos! I live in western ny, so your channel got me threw the long winter. Keep it up man!!
Looked great brother. This winter I am coming down to visit.
I actually really like bluefish 🤔🤤
Me too, ... love it !

Love the map of J-bay in the background 👌
Love watching your videos always informative. Have bought some of your rigs from J&H and Amazon. Kinda sad that I will not get any more tips for northeast fishing.
Thanks. I’ll make a trip up north sometime this year.
jesus , you're like a new man without a beard.

Hedging your best on some of the best and the worst . Glad you had something to clear your pallet
Dude. SMOKE YOUR BLUEFISH. Best smoking fish ever. Cajun seasonings.
down here in NC Bluefish is a delicacy. a much loved fish on the coast.
Bluefish is surprisingly good imo and it’s in how you prepare it. No crazy seasonings or soaking it in crap. Has to be eaten fresh though. Stuarticus86 I'm absolutely agree with you. Blue fish it's a very appreciated fish in other countries. It's good cooking fresh.
Ooh yeah smoking it is amazing. I made 5 pounds last year, it was amazing on a cream cheese bagel with chives.
Yeah I have been so confused on why so many people saying that blue fish is a nasty fish!? I've grown up eating it and have always loved it! No you're doing it wrong you've gotta marinate them overnight! Best fish I've ever caught and ate when marinated and lightly fried in flour.
That’s the perfect size blue and the only way I cook them. The sauce looks great, I’m going to try that next time with my fish. Crabs are always a nice side. Keep em comin’ ..
I bet it'd be bangin with fluke

Thank you for promoting catch & release of bluefish...love to catch em and eat em..more for me!
Hope you're enjoying life in NC, definitely enjoying the work you've been producing
Nice video. Never seen anybody buy bluefish at the market.

I am looking to make a broiled while bluefish like I used to get at a restaurant in sheepshead Bay

Viktor Neyman long shank hook

Hey Elias what power are the slow pitch rods?
Looks delicious.
Looks great 🍻
around here we call 'em Tailor, around 30cm-50cm is great eating.
best eaten fresh, they should ideally be Bled on capture and placed on ice
they can spoil rapidly and don't keep too well in the freezer (flesh goes to mush)
Bluefish is delicious. Here in Australia we call them ' tailor '. The secret is - THEY MUST BE BLED ON CAPTURE. Otherwise they are disgusting . Try it and you will see! They also smoke BEAUTIFULLY
Awesome video 🖒
Dude that second sauce that u put on the black drum look phaqin amazing.. it looked like a creamy Alfredo paste.. nice work on the preparation..😎🤙🏽🎣
It was good : ) would go well with fluke or tog also
I guess you are new to riding the Big Yellow shark lure? What are you going to do when that hammerhead come in for the catch n eat reveiw? What your defense?
What rig was u using that was hooked on the shark tail
Great Video!!
I just moved from Long Island New York to NC but I went from 15 mins from the ocean to 3 hours I miss my weekend fishing trips
watupmike F that.
As you can tell by all the comments...many people have eaten and love blues, myself included. Always eat them fresh. 12”-15” best size. No need to bleed. Roger's bluefish glaze on cooking and fishing is really good, you should try it out
Late comment, bluefish or tailor in Australia are a great table fish. Well because that’s like pretty much all you catch off the beach or rocks.
Black drum taste great dude. Once cooked you can hardly tell the taste apart from redfish
"I don't know where my bait is in the water column...OH shit!"
Had me dyin
I've enjoyed deep fried croaker at Korean restos. Surprisingly good.
Great video and Absolutely right Elias blue fish are not for softy.
Looks good, never had bake crabs before got to try it. Can I add 🍋 lemons to the bake crabs.
Mouth watering
Ive had blue fish 1 time. It was different but I really like it
Hey Elias, what kind of fish would you suggest for someone that can't stand the smell of fish?
Triggerfish
hmm okay will see if we can buy some around here.. Unfortunately I live a little ways away from the ocean.. couple hours at least.
J.A.Ratt85 Fish sticks?
Hey didn't you do a catch and cook pikeminnow? I thought you did but I can't seem to find it.. It turns out we have local Sacramento Pikeminnow (Squawfish) and someone was asking how to cook them and I was going to refer them to your video.
No lemon juice?
I heard smoked bluefish pâté is pretty good (it helps with the texture too)
Nice meal you made
Made stuff bluefish filet 2 days ago. Was pretty good.
2:57 did you say taxman?
Need some help.
I tried looking it up but I think I am using the wrong word.
Sharks are called taxman because they take a bite of your fish.
Anotherflores91 Hey, thank you for your help. Sorry I replied late.
What pliers were you using? And what’s the little thing mounted on them?
Kastking pliers, they have a small light on them
Bluefish is good man
That key west kayak comment was funny
Bluefish is one of the best tasting fish here in Trinidad
So I'm late to the party. My Grandmother always liked to make Bluefish into Pate. Sometimes smoked. Grandfather and I would flop them onto the Avalon Pier, cut their tail and gills to bleed. Always very tasty however Grandmother prepared bluefish. I've never eaten it your way. I'm gonna try it out in the future.
Well, you must have liked it the way you tore into it. Bluefish has a bad rep
If you fill up sink with water, you can scale him with a fork underwater and not worry about scales everywhere
Nice video Elías 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Where in nc are ya at? may be moving to Southport soon
Casting and blasting Outdoors Wilmington area
Nice man, not sure how I feel about the move but hopefully it’ll be good
hope you are adjusting to NC
Great! now I'm hungry.
Nice trip!
We don't like the taste of the bluefish either. The crabs look delicious, as well as the sauce.
Soon after this trip I discovered Spanish mackerel. And I will probably never put a bluefish on my kitchen table in NC again.
Filet your bluefish , remove ALL red meat, put the filets in boiling water until done. Put the meat in a colunder to drain and fluff. Prepare the meat as if you were making crab cakes, don't forget the Old Bay seasoning. You'll be surprised.
I like blue fish!
Could you do a blue crab catch and cook?
Dominique D you want real blue crabs you have to come to Maryland. They just don't taste the same from anywhere else in the country and where known for our blue crabs. Something with the Chesapeake Bay just makes them taste better for some reason. Not sure if it's what their eating out here or what but there is a big difference. David Smith Virginia crabs are the same. Actually all chesapeake blue crabs travel in to the bay from virginia waters.
I didn't realize you were in Virginia. There's alot of people from Florida and Georgia. Louisiana etc on here as well and they get blue crabs down there too but their not the same. Or run Trott line.
I cook my blue claws in the oven every time just right side up with just about the same seasoning and bread crumbs
Minnesotan here, I'd be scared as heck about accidentally snagging a shark
Classic wink at the end !
Loved the shout out to KWKF. I know collaboration videos can be kind of hack, but have always hoped you guys would hook up.
If you bleed the King Mackerel immediately and then ice them they are fantastic table fare.
Hey man do you miss the bay yet ? Lol
