PIAT No.426 Fuze: How it works.

  • The safety on this fuze is needed because to make it more sensitive you need to use a much weaker creep spring (Spring like in the 425). It would be too dangerous to just switch the spring in a 425 because dropping it could kill you. That combined with the free floating firing pin Made it a much better fuze, despite the possible risks from rough handling which could be minimized by not using any fuzes that were subject to dropping accidents.

    You Sir, have merely made an imperfect, 3D printed, representation of something really cool, where as I have, er, um, a few months ago, I turned a passible vase out of a piece of apple wood. I stand by my accomplishments.

      At least yours can sit in your house and look pretty. Mine has basically finished its usefulness.

    We're probably at the point where you could 3d print a full mechanism in one go. Some of the simpler designs like the shear pins ones and stuff would probably work

    • @Stray03

      Definitely a bunch of plastic mines out there that can be 3d printed. And a bunch more in people's imagination.

      I've been 3D printing revolver speedloaders (MJF not FDM) with spring-resisted positive feed as a single piece, spring and all. Apart from a striker and primer, a simple impact fuse should be straightforward enough!

    • @Stray03
      @Stray03  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. There are alot of complex moving parts that are 3d printed in one shot. Would be rather simple to deal with making certain fuzes. Even more interesting is that you can make prints using dual extruder heads where connecting points can be made with the water soluble material. One solid piece, drop in water and all the interconnecting linkages and supports "melt" away.

      @@Stray03 idk how much cad experience you have but a 3d printed fuze archive would be amazing. I'd be willing to help out with it too

      @@griffin5226 I would love to get into that but I am about 1 step above a chimp using fusion. I had some experience with cad in the form of solid works in school but never took enough time to get useful with it. I can make things that I need to get by with but if I was good at it you would be seeing many more things represented with 3d cad drawings and such in my videos. I have a video I'm trying to make for someone about how a specific grenade works and unfortunately the easiest way to make it would be a cad animation and haven't figured out enough to even know where to start.

    I read a book years ago “Churchill’s ministry of ungentlemanly warfare” and they talk about some kind of spigot gun that they strapped to a tree. I know that piat is a spigot gun but I think this booby trap spigot gun worked differently, I couldn’t really understand it from reading and there’s not many photos of it online. Thanks man

      The Clarke 'Tree' spigot gun. Working on a video on it at the moment. There is, as Stray mentioned, a great OSS training film on it floating around online.

    Hi, so without the propellant charge, the empty dummy projectile would only fly a few yards ? Did you ever look into using a light load 12ga shotgun round ,minus lead shot "of course" as a form of thrust.Thats the First and simplest thing that comes to my mind. Thanks

    • @Stray03
      @Stray03  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I haven't tried but I'm sure a yard max, and with the round secured in with the clip it may not even come off the actual tray. The clearing procedure mentioned in the manual would lead more belief to that happening.
      An empty 12 may sort of work but the charge has to be just right. Too light and it doesn't recock. Too heavy and damage to projectile or launcher can happen.

      @@Stray03 thanks for your reply, A yard max ,thats crazy..lol .. I forgot the propellant charge also is suppose to recock that huge spring,Dang .Recocking not that big a deal or hurry during peace time. Are they ok to dry fire? The piat is such a big ,heavy and awkward thing to handle. I checked on ebay and was hoping someone made a 3d printed round for display or to convert into a dummy firing projectile...no luck.
      Will checkout your other videos!
      Thanks

      The armourers bench has 3d print files you can buy if you want to print a display one. Yeah you are not supposed to dry fire one due to the possibility of hammering off the brazed on end piece which would be a pain to fix. I have a few videos on the piat you can watch if you want.
