A lot of people have mentioned the fact that I missed out a lot of aspects of the Dutch economy such as the discovery of gas, slavery, etc. I aimed to make this video a short video giving a small insight on the Dutch economy, so I did end up leaving a lot out to make it short, but I realise that it would have been better if I went a bit more in depth. I am just a one man team, so researching and scripting is just one part of the process of making a video, but I'm going to focus more on giving better in depth explanations. Thank you for the support and I am committed to improving my research and coverage of future stories! ❤
I think you did a good job with the video. At the end of the video you could also briefly mention the topics you didn't include because of ... That way it is clear for the viewers that you left them out on purpose and not because of negligence.
the slave trade had only a small inpact on our economy, the voc made more money with spice trade (yes they did some nasty stuff but we cant change that) and we traded grain and fish in the baltic area which boosted the dutch economy a lot.

Very smart to make a video about The Netherlands! It practically guarantees a vivid comment section with Dutch people debating about the stuff you did or did not talk about, lol. We are very predictable folks 😅
Since I was born I live in the Noordoostpolder, Flevoland. Almost every day I got to see a sign with the following message: 'Welkom op de zeebodem'. In English it means 'welcome to the seabed'. It's amazing that Dutchies were able to do this!
You forgot the most important industry/company. ASML is THE biggest and best company who makes nano-machines that can processor chips. Perhaps the most influential company to date!
They all think in the US it's a US company and supply line for semiconductors, which it's not. They just make some parts, but most parts made in the US are from foreign companies.
I am from The Netherlands and I must say that, besides how great the video, accuracy and visuals are, you definitely pronounce the Dutch words very, very well. It's very rare for non-Dutchies to be able to say our pronunciation of the letter "G" even remotely close to how it's said, props to you for that man. Well VOC was also traded in human misery called SLAVERY and COLONIALISM. And the reason why it’s so highly valued was cause the Dutch central bank prints money to up the value of its stock! ….these were not mentioned
Every Dutchman receives a tax bill for pumping water. The message is clear: to survive we all have to contribute. This shaped the country's culture. Avery Dutch kid is taught about the disaster of 1953 when poorly maintained dams couldn't hold back the stormy sea. The Dutch are puritans living in a small country and forced to cooperate and be rational.
That rationality went away decades ago. I can assure you, there's nothing rational about Dutch people these days. It isn't a coincidence that the Dutch are the most pro-EU and least informed people in Europe these days about the actual state of things. Unlike most other countries, Dutch folks tend to take the bald faced lies of politicians at face value and believe them without even thinking about whether or not it makes sense. Unlike other European people, the Dutch have been trained by the government to separate politics from reality. So when the government pulls crazy crap, the Dutch people just pretend that there's nothing they can do about it. Of course not everyone is like that. But the reason things like the farmer's protests have not lead to any improvement is exactly because the people don't care since they believe politics is something too far away from them to truly care about. You'd think they learned in the useless forced lockdowns, but nope... they didn't.
For 'pumping' water? I assume you mean our regular water/hydro bills. This is not exclusive to the Netherlands and I assume that pretty much every country has this. Water purification and transport requires money, always.
Yes, and we do our workouts by masturbating, sniffing coke, or taking ecstasy, while growing cannabis and tulips, in the mean time building windmills, all on wooden shoes!
Infrastructure is intricately interwoven, roads, raiways, waterways with many stations, harbours etc. Besides that due to its small size export is mandatory.
You forgot energy independence. An abundance of coal and natural gas has allowed the Netherlands to be energy independent for most of the 20th century. Until they shut it all down, of course. There is an abundance of coal in the southern Netherlands. And in the north is the 'Groningen gas field'. The largest natural gas field in Europe and one of the largest in the world. They were an exporter of energy.

1:45 actually, the fertility of the seabed is pretty bad, but it works fine for grass, flowers, and some crops, which is why the Netherlands is a big exported of f.e. meat, flowers, and stuff like onions and turnips. 2:53 most windmills were used as pumping stations to manage the water levels of the land below sea level.
After growing specific crops for a few years to desalinate the soil, it is very productive. Hence the agricultural output of the older polders is very high.

Our country was in ruin after WW2, alot of the infrastructure destroyed and prior to WW2 we weren't doing all that great either economically. The wealth today is defenitely not from the era of VOC. It is because of our geograpical situation, our trade today and our infrastructure. We rebuilt and kept building, making our little country the most viable option to get goods overseas to the rest of mainland Europa, at least close to us. Think: Germany with a huge economy and alot of the countries even further away. Other ports and routes are just not that efficient. There are container ships that can only dock at 2 places in the world: Shanghai and Rotterdam. This i write to illustrate how important a good infrastructure is for a thriving economy.
Nah you forgot that you had good stone building pre ww2. In every village mills, flat terrain with good climate for farming and easy to build infrastructure. In comparison East Europe was dirt poor century ago with most building made of wood which fallen apart, harsh climate, bad laws, wars, aristocracy etc. Dutch had centuries of colonialism, slavery, cheap labour, sailors and nice conditions to live.
Nah we got off light during ww2. Our cities didnt get mass bombed or hit by firestorms during 1000 bomber air raids. Also no scortched earth was really applied like in other countries when the German's retreated. Only food was a problem because there already was a food shortage early on in the war. The Americans and the Marshall plan is what got us back on our feet quick. Compared to England which was hugely in debt and had bankrupted their empire fighting the Germans. They were still on food rations in the late 50s!

I must correct you on something. The Netherlands did not get rich from the VOC. The VOC had a massive overhead because of the maintenance of the fleet and the cost of war. The company barely broke even. The main reasons the Netherlands became a large economy, are: 1. Being a delta country: both the Rhine and Möse flow through the Netherlands, and give access to Germany and France. 2. Being a small country with a high population density: centres with high population density are more efficient and productive 3. Being rich in natural resources: the country was and is rich in fertile land, wood, coal and natural gas 4. Being part of and establishing larger trade treaties, blocks, leagues, and unions; allowing for easier trade with other nations
@@testjeaapiel9707 The book "Bewind en beleid bij de VOC" reveals that from its founding until approx. 1690 it turned profits but after this, profits declined and turned into losses, year after year again until it was eventually dissolved. It never recovered from the colonial costs, operational costs, strong competition from the British East India Company, and the wars it had to fund to retain its sphere of influence. You do your research, geez XD
I'll add some more reasons we became rich in that time: 1. Captain Piet Hein captured a Spanish silver fleet worth in today's money in the billions 2. Because of the end of the 80 year war (which was the kick start for the following war), the 30 year war allowed us to trade arms and other needs by just hopping across our border or trade them with Sweden

Sounds legit. Thought you would have mentioned ASML, as the format the video was heading. I mean, that is one of the most important companies The Netherlands has, we're talking a tech company that literally prevents wars in Asia. A company where the US is begging that they don't take on new "cliental" as it could cause wars. We're talking a company that has a huge threat pertaining to spies infiltrating it. I would consider it one of the most valuable, globally speaking, companies The Netherlands has started.
Thanks for taking the time for making this video. I never fully realized that the capacity of mills to saw wood with greater capacity was the reason for why wood was such a big part of the dutch milling industries. But it's good to know that even though Wageningen University is influential throughout the world the agriculture industry in terms of actual food production and trade. It's actually just 7% as it says on a Wageningen University webpage.
Not a very wide-spread saying if to be fair. Yeah okay we can all agree taxes are (arguably too) high because ofc we'd all like to pay 0% if we could, but most people that genuinely complain about taxes don't fully realize how much we get in return for our taxes compared to other countries, they just hear its cheaper elsewhere and skip over the details. Do you really wanna pay half the taxes in return for having to pay the full 100% of hospital or school or whatever bills? i'll honestly happily pass on that deal, i say just let gov take 21% if it means i don't have to worry, for that 21% i know that whatever life throws at me, my gov has my back. 🤷♂
So that is why everyone is driving a donkey on mud roads, crossing rivers on an old ferry, never going to an hospital, not knowing how to spell English because they never attended school, children starving, nobody attending a 100 € concert or football match or festival, never going to spain for holiday. I understand.
The halls of Parliaments world over today, are filled with career politicians. Popular governments get away with more because they are artful at becoming a habit of the heart and less of a burden. Countries with Monarchies however, may be worse off, royalty often hide their extravagance behind government, who look the other by continually endorsing their role in tradition and religion. The world is corrupted by money, so democracies allowed systems to develop that manage equality just a little bit better. You may feel freer in a wealthy economy but you are still bound to the taxes imposed by your favourite government, and for whatever reason they deem fit. But not all true democracies appear by the image you'd expect. By comparison, banks in the Muslim states and others charge very little interest by western banking standards. So, what rules our lives is interest on borrowed money, said of which essentially drives inflation. It repulses us when someone is decapitated, even if it is for murder. We'd far rather pay for their lifetime incarceration than have their blood on our conscience. In the end, we're to blame. Monarchies, democracies and religion rendered us fickle, they rendered us helpless. Everything is our own fault.

Nice video ! Looks really good and sound perfect, one tip the Netherlands also found the biggest gas deposit in Europe, a pretty big reason why are infrastructure is killing it !
The VOC was of course very big, it was Northern Europe making us so rich back in the days. It's estimated that the VOC has made around 20% of the money back then and that trading in Northern Europe made us about 80%. The thing with the VOC is that is was 1 company and why it's just way more impressive
The VOC was actually a lot of different companies combined into one. Hence the word 'United' East India Company (or in Dutch: Verenigde Oostindische Compagnie). Tax income from trade was incredibly important to fund the war of independence, and the fierce competition between the different rivalling shipping companies drove up buying prices and drove down selling prices, thus lowering war chest contributions. The Dutch government solved this by combining all the rivalling shipping companies into one big trading company.

I once had a remarkable experience in the Netherlands, staying with family in Wassenaar, my cousin and I decided to ride bicycles to the beach, a relatively short distance in a flat country... we cycled for a little while, then we began to go uphill, up and up on a road that went left and right but a significant incline that caught us by surprize. After a number of (long) minutes huffing and puffing, up this long-ish hill, with our heart rates also going up, we arrived at the top, and there was the ocean, level with us! It was an amazing epiphany, to feel in our hearts, legs and lungs, as we stopped in awe, and then looked back to see the Netherlands well below the sea level. If we were passengers in a car, I doubt it would have had have the same impact.
In the more rural areas, you can drive on a road on top of a dike, with on one side a canal with water pretty near the top of the dike, and on the other side nice houses with farm land, ten to twenty feet below, where only the second floor might look over the dike's summit. It's still an amazing observation, even for me, who doesn't know anything else.

The Netherlands is so rich because it is a tax haven for multinationals. Due to the tax treaties that the Netherlands has concluded with most countries in the world, those companies only have to pay tax once and they do that in the Netherlands. They must supposedly have an office and there must be a plant in it. These companies must also have their own mailbox. For the rest, it must be kept clean. It wasn’t the invention of the windmill but the invention of the crankshaft that allowed for faster production of lumber. The VOC has indeed been an important part of the history of our country, but I believe freedom, both religious and personal, have played a major part in the development of our culture. Perhaps it is of note to add this to your video together with the fact that this country fought a war for independence that lasted 80! Years. The economic success of the Netherlands has a cultural background.

They have debts (also, in this country you can go into the " schuldhulpsanering". They simply do not care. With making your own contribution 400 euro per month, people shy away from going to the doctor for small inconveniences or what they think are small. As a Dutchman, I admit we are a relatively rich country but insanely rich? If you compare us with other economies in the region by nominal GDP per capita, we rank a bit above Germany but slightly below Denmark. Above Belgium but below Ireland. Above Sweden but below Norway, above Austria but below Switzerland. Etc.
I was born and raised in a German region bordering the Netherlands, not just geographically but also in terms of mentality, landscape, architecture, history, and culture. I lived in the Netherlands for two years and speak fluent Dutch at an intermediate level. I believe that what made and keeps making the Netherlands rich is a "with the head through the wall" attitude in regard to which historical research would certainly be exciting. I count myself as a Dutchman when I say that due to my cultural proximity eventhough my passport is still German and my native language is German too, eventhough I picked up on a bit of Low German from family stories and wisdoms, the language that my grandparents still spoke and that is more or less the same as Dutch. The Dutchman will always find solutions to problems, challenges and desires without much overthinking. The Dutchman enjoys the rain and the storm. Lacking capital? The Dutchman will invent the stock exchange. Not enough land? The Dutchman will dry it. Too much car traffic? The Dutchman will establish world-class alternatives.

People always forget about this.
I must correct you on something. The Netherlands did not get rich from the VOC. The VOC had a massive overhead because of the maintenance of the fleet and the cost of war. The company barely broke even.
The main reasons the Netherlands became a large economy, are:
1. Being a delta country: both the Rhine and Möse flow through the Netherlands, and give access to Germany and France.
2. Being a small country with a high population density: centres with high population density are more efficient and productive
3. Being rich in natural resources: the country was and is rich in fertile land, wood, coal and natural gas
4. Being part of and establishing larger trade treaties, blocks, leagues, and unions; allowing for easier trade with other nations
do some research geez xD
@@testjeaapiel9707 The book "Bewind en beleid bij de VOC" reveals that from its founding until approx. 1690 it turned profits but after this, profits declined and turned into losses, year after year again until it was eventually dissolved. It never recovered from the colonial costs, operational costs, strong competition from the British East India Company, and the wars it had to fund to retain its sphere of influence. You do your research, geez XD
I'll add some more reasons we became rich in that time:
1. Captain Piet Hein captured a Spanish silver fleet worth in today's money in the billions
2. Because of the end of the 80 year war (which was the kick start for the following war), the 30 year war allowed us to trade arms and other needs by just hopping across our border or trade them with Sweden

*Anyone is rich out here except the Dutch citizens. The government is throwing away money on anything but it's hard working citizens.

I live in the Netherlands but the gouverment is rich due to taxes. This country is known by that and believe me the citizens are paying themselves dry and barely got anything left for themselves.
Taxes aren't the problem I believe. Taxes pay for what we have in NL. Not much corruption, good roads, health care, social safety nets etc.
Life is expensive because food and energy prices aren't governed properly and housing is not affordable. Income tax isn't crazy high however double taxing is f*cked If you ask me (housing tax, wealth tax, gift tax, etc)

@@Pogost1ck Not much corruption? You must be joking. I think corruption is through the roof but nobody seems to care. In the last years I have seen how the incompetence seems to be syphoning through. Meanwhile, there is a green tax obsession in a country that cannot basically cause a dent in any emissions on a global scale. They want to make paid parking basically everywhere. Buses and trains are so freaking expensive and they want to make having a car even more expensive. We can't all use our bikes to get to work. It makes no sense that they make it so expensive to simply live. People are leaving. They should really fix this now and not wait until it gets really bad. But there is nobody competent at the top. Either far left ideologues who care more about global climate change (which makes no sense for such a small country) or trans agendas and on the other side you have right wingers who obsess over migration. New Amsterdam was the name of the seventeenth-century fortified settlement in the province of New Netherland that would later grow into what is now the city of New York. Broadway is one of the major streets in Manhattan, New York. At the time of the first settlement of Manhattan, this street was a path that the Manhattan Indians used to go. After Peter Minuit bought the land from the Indians on behalf of the Netherlands, the name “Breede Weg” was given to it. This name literally translated into Broadway after the city passed into British hands.

In the Netherlands they pay between 2 and 8 percent tax. And there is a tower that houses as many as 1500 companies. So there are also 1500 mailboxes and a cleaning lady who also waters the plants.

As an dutch person, i am suprised at this news
It wasn’t the invention of the windmill but the invention of the crankshaft that allowed for faster production of lumber. The VOC has indeed been an important part of the history of our country, but I believe freedom, both religious and personal, have played a major part in the development of our culture. Perhaps it is of note to add this to your video together with the fact that this country fought a war for independence that lasted 80! Years. The economic success of the Netherlands has a cultural background.
We pay much taxes, but the people are not rich. We have many 2ndhandstores and foodstamps for the poor. But even if you earn 3000€ you cant survive in the Netherlands. We have so many refugees and the goverment take good care of them and forget her own people. But England, France, Belgium, Germany have the same problems. Europe look like one big thirldworldcountry.
Thats bullshit. You've either never travelled or you don't understand numbers and or money. You're accounting taxes as something we have to endure, and the fact we have second-hand stores should indicate what? Look at our healthcare, it's absurd. We've probably forgotten what it normal. Or the huge organisations that exist for people that have gotten ill and are unable to ever work.
I see two things pertaining to our "poor" as you describe them. A lot have debts and when I converse with them a lot are not because we simply have no money. Apparently it's self-evident for people to own an iPhone of 1000,- or have a phone bill of 60,- per month. I see "poor" people that often have addictions.
Our "poor" people are not financially poor, we are just very poor with money spending.
When I walk to some neighbourhoods or bars explain this to me. How can so many of the poorest people, that according to you have to shop at second-hand stores and need foot staps, be addicted to cigarettes? I've met people that genuinely need financial help! They have debts (also, in this country you can go into the " schuldhulpsanering". For people with major debts, they kind of declare themselves bankrupt, and the government controls your money, so you have not too much or too less).
Anyway how can I meet these people you describe and they tell me they smoke one pack of cigarettes a day (seen worse). Thats almost 300,- a month. How can anyone declare how people have so little money here when I see the poorest people smoke away 300,-.
@@SOSULLI i pay more then 400 euro each month for health care, my boss is also paying, it is more then 20% for a average income, the energy housing etc
@@Schurkie505 Well when it comes to the wealth of a country it's only measured by the poorest. So I can listen to friends and family talk about how much taxes they pay, regarding income, piggy bank or a donation from someone. Or when filling out your taxes you're required to note down if you've got more than 542,- in paper at home.
But when I look at myself and a lot of people I have encountered. After studying psychology, got a good job in healthcare. Then got very ill myself, random seizures, so can't work. My current situation and this is all pure from the state. I have a large student loan and I pay 7,- a month. I've got pretty big appartement and receive a discount with rent and my healthcare. Receive enough money to do anything I want.
Not gonna buy an Audi or travel first class or buy the latest 1400,- iPhone. Even though these things are NOT reserved for rich people here, but for simply the people above the poorest.
@@Schurkie505 Health care in Netherlands is only good if you have real serious problems. But in Netherlands. there is basically no prevention. They don't care about the general well-being of the population. To catch things early so you don't have to spend tens of thousands of euro to treat these things when they get really bad. They simply do not care. With making your own contribution 400 euro per month, people shy away from going to the doctor for small inconveniences or what they think are small. People pay between 150 and 200 euro per month for medical insurance. Some young people do not use this for 10 years which means they have basically paid into the system 18000 to 24000 euro. But they paid for other people basically. It is a social system. It is simply not going to be good the more of an aging population appears which is the case as it stands. There needs to be a better way.
2500 netto zou genoeg moeten zijn om voor 3 a 4 mensen rond te kunnen komen. Als je rond de 1000 euro per maand uitgeeft aan hypotheek of huur dan 4.
Beautiful! One more reason is that, thanks to its geographic location, the Netherlands survived both world wars with relatively little damage as compared to the rest of Europe. It also remained unaffected by the cold war. This also adds to political stability and economic prosperity.
