1982 Mustang GT: Why this year was so important to Ford

  • The Ford Mustang GT has long been an icon in American automotive history, symbolizing power, performance, and the spirit of the open road. In 1982, Ford introduced a revamped version of this legendary vehicle, the 1982 Ford Mustang GT. Before the release of the 1982 Ford Mustang GT, the GT model had been absent from the Mustang lineup for 13 years. In this video, we delve into the details of the 1982 Ford Mustang GT, exploring its design, performance, and enduring legacy.
The GT designation was last used on the Mustang in 1969. That’s right, from 1970 through 1981, Ford did not offer a specific GT model variant of the Mustang. Instead, during those years, performance-oriented Mustangs were generally identified by other trim levels or packages, such as the Mach 1 or Cobra.
Before we move on to the 1982 Mustang GT, Lets first take a look at the last Mustang GT for 1969.
Visually, the 1969 Mustang GT boasted a muscular and aggressive stance that perfectly complemented its high-performance capabilities. Distinctive features such as the iconic GT door stripe decals, quad exhaust tips, and hood scoop added to its commanding presence on the road.

Silver was always my favorite. I would've liked to have seen them available in a dark blue, (in a similar shade to the Dark Medium Red) dark green, bright yellow, and even orange.
I would've liked the traditional Grabber colors on them too.

My wife and I still have a blue 1983 Mustang GT with a 4 speed. A little more power at 175 and the front was cleaned up a little from the 82 but mostly the same as this. Around 60k miles and it still drives pretty good. Unrestored but always kept under a cover. Sometimes I can't believe it still goes but it does. Glad we never got rid of her.

Stopped only for toilet and gas, speedometer was preety much pinned at 85 (age of 85 speedos) the entire trip. The Mustang was on the Foxbody platform for 15 years, 1979-1993. That was the longest it was on any platform. That is because it was supposed to be replaced by the Ford Probe but Ford heard the fans and changed their mind.

    So I was 12 in 82.
In 83 My soccer coach had an 83 w/manual trans. She took me home one day and I LOVED IT. My football coach had an 84 V8 camaro and I thought it was ok... cool and all but not really that special. Then one of my football friends got a brand new 85 Mustang GT w/5 speed. I was in absolute LUST. Not quite sure if I'd rather have had a girl or the mustang at that time.... I mean a girl would like.... but the GT would like and like and like.... everytime I wanted to. 😉
So far I've had two fox body 5.0L stangs and put many miles on them. They have been very very fun and nostalgic. But I tell you a truth.... my 04 Z06 Corvette does everything far better than they ever did. Well... except for filling long since past teenage fantasies.
I kid you not... there have been curve on the tail of the dragon than my 89GT had me butt puckered wondering if I was going to live... but the Z06 stuck like glue and I had only wished I pushed it harder.

Best looking Fox Mustang of them all! I had a ten year old red one with 140000 miles on it, and more than doubled it! The worst part about these cars was the jump from second to third gear, but that second gear pull was almost worth it.
The '80 and '81 Cobras used the Pace Car scoop. The scoop on the '82 GT I believe was optional on any Mustang or Capri from '79-'81 or '82. If you got the automatic in 1982, then you also got a 255 and not the 5.0.

I test drove a new 82 GT from a dealer. I was 18 and dumb enough to light up the rear tires with a salesman sitting in the passenger seat. That didn’t go all that well. Anyway, I didn’t end up buying a 5.0, an LX until 92. For what it’s worth, I don’t remember the automatic was offered in the GT (or LX behind a V-8) until 85 or 86, and then it was a lesser 302 with throttle body instead of the four barrel or FI motor that came with a five speed depending on the year. The SROD might have been the only manual transmission they could access from their inventory in time to meet the launch deadline other than a granny gear truck four speed. The 82s and some 83s came with the SROD manual transmission that did not help the quarter mile times or the road courses, but was still quicker than the competition, mainly because the Foxes were significantly lighter than the brand Xes even though the others could be had with four barrels, FI, and real four speeds. But the 82 GT was a significant in the history of Mustangs because not only did Ford do basically the same thing with parts bin parts for the 302 the way Dodge had done the 360s for the Lil Red Expresses, but Ford actually highlighted actual performance again when they marketed the car.

It was dressed in black paint red cloth interior sunroof not the T-tops and cruise control. I choose a 1982 Mercury Capri GS 5L and it never rattled through till I sold it in 1992 for top dollar with 150,000 miles on it and it still looked like brand new except for repaint as it was black, If you DONT like mustangs then DONT watch the video & DONT comment!
