    My mom used to grow a garden every year when I was younger, after moving away years ago I started missing having fresh peppers and tomatoes. I decided to grow peppers this year and stumbled across your channel seeking information. I have binge watched you for weeks now and decided to try my hand at a proper garden. Very appreciative for all the information on your channel. Love the channel. Earned a sub and future buyer.

    Hi Gary, second try at starting seeds, I tried to do them outdoors last year in a little cheap greenhouse and failed miserably. After watching many of your great videos, I know why and I am excited for my prospects of success this year. Bought a rack and lights and the seed trays I bought from you have arrived, so I will be starting my seeds tomorrow. I will be growing them in my garage, so I will wrap the rack with 4 mil plastic sheeting until the temps warm a little more, right now 40's at night and 60's daytime but will be rapidly starting to warm from here on out (Mountain Foothills of SoCal, zone 9B).
    I think we just had our last freeze this week. Going to use heat mats to start and the rack is at the front of and east facing garage so I will open the doors and let the sun warm it it the morning. One question I have is I have seen others saying you need to have fans blowing on the seedlings but I have not seen that in any of your videos. Do you recommend this?

      Thanks for the shop support BTW. Slow and steady. Good luck. I never used a fan. It can help, but I just move my hand across them to give them motion and help support stem firmness. Its an option.

    This year I plan to start my seeds earlier than last year. Lots of good tips here. Combined with your other recent video on the portable clear greenhouse covers, I can plant them earlier, too. Heating up the soil and protecting the transplants from harsh elements, plus a stockier stem to begin with... feeling good about that.
    Last year we had that beautiful week or so of spring weather followed by a freezing week of snow and strong blistering winds. I waited to plant, but many people didn't and lost everything. These tips all together extend my growing season.

    Oh... So THAT'S what I did wrong... I was always told to put coffee grounds and egg shell in the bottom of the container I use to start, I used toilet paper rolls but have redone with the mold issue.. And I didn't know to water from bottom. I don't have grow lights, but my old eastern facing window seems to be doing the job. I'll also be mixing up some of the peroxide mix. Fertilizer is on my list. Thank you for getting to the point and saying what to do right. Too many videos on what NOT to do-which is easy to figure out.

    Great recap as I definitely needed a reminder on feeding seedlings and # of hours for lights! I also liked the magnify view in this video. Doing my own experiment by starting some tomatoes now, with plans to transplant mid-April and "wrap" a 4x4 raised bed in plastic (think vertical row cover). I'm 5b and really shouldn't plant tomatoes until end of May but we'll see what happens. Thanks for all you do and I'm excited to learn more from you this season!

    I've found in the very humid Pacific Northwest that bottom watering can cause the soil to be too moist, especially early on when the seeds are only at the top of the soil and can't absorb that water fast enough. So when they are just starting out, I top water.

      @@THERUSTEDGARDEN Hey I have a question. I started some beefsteak seeds indoors. I have them under 2 T5 lights about 6 inches or so from the plants. They looked fantastic till about 10-12 days ago, when they started to curl down and turn purple on the underside of leaves. Some of the first leaves are upside down and very thin. Two of them dried up and died completely. My kale and jalapeño seedlings have no issues. Just the tomatoes. I have all my plants in miracle grow potting mix. I was a little excessive with my watering... I tried transplanting them and replacing the soil with dryer soil. I wasn't sure if it was a fungal problem from being overwatered. Perhaps its an issue of temperature affecting nutrient uptake? Any idea whats going on with them and how I can save them?

  • @dennisthornton4384
    @dennisthornton4384 ปีที่แล้ว

    A question: can you, should you or is it worth it to use a diluted fertilizer (Stay Green tomato/peppers 18-18-21)
    as a foliant feeding spray ? I have not been doing it but watching you use the peroxide spray made me
    think of the possibility. The reason being that the tray i am using under the seedling cubes has drain holes in it
    and unless I place the cubes in a dish pan it is not possible to bottom feed them.
    One only needs to look at the health and vigor of the plants in your care to see that you
    know what you are talking about
    Thank you. Den Bob Canal Fulton Ohio

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The vermisterra brand is aged and sifted so, It is really just casting. No need to sterilize. Other brands might be fine but depends on how much non casting compost comes with their products.

    Always enjoy your videos, Gary!
    I'm hoping you can clear up something I've been puzzled over - you'd mentioned liking VermisTerra castings because they're aged for a number of years, but then I see another company advertising how fresh their castings are and claiming that "castings provide the most value when they are fresh, but they will continue to be beneficial for several years" [Brut Worm Farms]. Does it matter how old castings are, or are these just different marketing strategies?
    Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge & experience - am a subscriber and look forward to your tutorials!

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      So VS is aged and sifted. Means less additional composted materials. Very few if any bug issues. As aging decays remaining matter. Bugs dont live in it. Castings is what I want with all the execrations from the worm, not compost. When you by fresh castings. It can have more biological life, more NPK from other organic matter. Too me it is compost with casting. For me... I dont want fresh compost in seed starts. In the garden... I add it myself. I just want casting. Hope that helps. Check out my point of view too but that is my reasoning. Sometimes best to buy both products and test it out. See what works for you. Good luck,

    I have 19 day old tomato seedlings that I just replanted deeper in a new pot with new moistened soil to encourage stronger stem growth. There are some that are just barely starting to grow their first true leaves, but the "baby" leaves are starting to get really crinkled and dry. I have them by a north-facing window as well as under a 300 lumen growing light that is at 80% dimness and about 5 inches from the top of the leaves. I am making sure to keep bottom watering as soon as I realize the top 2-3" of the soil is barely damp, so I don't think I'm over or underwatering. Do you think I am exposing the seedlings to too much light/heat from the grow light as well as the sun from the window? Also, I prepared a 24-8-16 water soluble fertilizer I think at half strength (it calls for 1/2 tsp per gallon and I used 1/4 tsp). When should I start to fertilize? Thanks!!

      It has to be a lot of sun for the first week after germination to make sure the seedling dont get leggy. It would be fine after that. You need like 8 hours of direct sun for seedlings. Sometimes it is good to start them under lights and them move them into the space.

    more reliable than trying to take the temp of falling rains.. lol.... with a garden shovel slam it in to the hilt..6in.. now push the handle away from you.. now you should have a nice clear trench in the garden. now that thermometer you put in a ziplock bag.. drop it in the hole..the shovel out and bon appetit! well acually you need to plant first.. sorry i used my weed baggy..) the ideal temp is high 60-80 higher the better.. (umhmm_) and if you really want to gangster.. invert the garden row idea .. mound the lanes.. there will be more time in direct sun near the part wanting the heat.. the roots... have fun

    Is it really necessary to sterilize the potting mix? I have some 3 week old sprouts that were planted in non sterilized soil, they seem to be doing well but I'm new at this so not sure. Will this really affect them in the long run? Thanks!

    • @shirleyk623
      @shirleyk623 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Sterilizing the soil is mainly for fungus gnats that might be in the starter mix not so much for growing the seeds

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Seeds do fine without boiling water but you use water to kill fungus gnat eggs.

    I have a container of fish emulsion (5-1-1) that I purchased about 3 - 4 years ago. I only used it that first year and It’s been in a sealed container since. Can I still use it or should I dispose of it and purchase a new container? Thank you, enjoy your blog.

    Hi Gary, I am still quite new to understanding lights, my neighbors just lent us a LED light that seems very powerful. it is 1000 W LED hanging for indoor outdoor. my question for you is at what distance do you suggest i hang it from my seedlings? and it has a dimmer, would i need to use that?

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So that might be a different light than I use so my 2-4 inches is moot. You have to find the manufacture if you can and see what is recommend. Some of them are pretty powerful.

Hate those little buggers, Lol wrote before watching the whole video, my bad. Questions answered. Lesson learned watch all before leaving a message.

    Are worm castings a fertilizer? And when moving the bigger seedlings to a bigger pot do you still use seed start or can you use potting mix with worm casting?

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I do pot up with worm castings. It is a low NPK fertilizer. WELL below 1-1-1. I use it in addition to higher fertilizers when in the garden but use it indoors as a lot of NPK isnt really needed.

    i started using your instructions and everything was awesome at first, but now neither the tomatoes or peppers have grown in a week. I think they're dead. :( (They're also kind of purple. The tomatoes much more than the peppers.) This happened about 12 days after sowing the peppers and 5 after the tomatoes. Two things happened at that time: one is i removed the heat pad because they had all germinated. This what i blamed at first. But the other thing is that i put in a lot of water in to bottom water, with the plan to pour it out after twenty minutes. Then I forgot about them and left them in water for a few hours. Now I'm thinking that I cut off their oxygen and killed them. Is this possible? I haven't watered in at least three days and the soil is still moist on top. I'm pretty down about this and thinking about trying a second round, though i'll be a few weeks behind...

    I’m slow. Are you saying to put the lights on as soon as I plant the seeds or at the time u see the 1st plant break out of the ground?

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you can guarantee you catch the first seed breaking out...turn the lights on then. But most people miss that so I just turn the light on like 3 days after planting. Nothing germinates in 3 days and now I have light on for the seeds
