    Im more of a flower gardener, but I may do 2-3 each of tomatoes and peppers a year. This is my first year doing everything from seed (annual flowers and veg), and I was inspired from Laura at Garden Answers to do a giving garden this year. Your videos have been very helpful in teaching me how to start seeds. I appreciated all the work you have put in to the your videos. Thanks for teaching us. =)

    oh my word. I'm in zone 5b & figured it would take 3-4 weeks for my hot peppers to germinate. So I seeded them a little over a week ago, 17 varieties, two seeds per cell in the larger 4-packs that I bought off your shop. Placed them in the Sunblaster Grow Light Garden that I purchased off of Amazon last year and I was floored when after a week all but one variety germinated! Wow. Temperature in there was about mid eighties & I guess they liked it; had to turn off the heat mat because it was almost 90 in there. Hope I can keep them going until it's time to plant about mid-May. Anyway, that Grow Garden was spendy but it's sure been effective on my hot peppers. Enjoyed the video, this is only my second year as a half-way serious gardener & your vids are very helpful!

    This is a great video, and one that I refer to all the time. I'm a novice so everything that can go wrong went wrong. I discovered that I was overfeeding my seedlings (coneflower and columbine)...the coneflower leaves were deformed but the plants were still growing albeit slowly...I stopped and they all have new normal leaves. They have all been transplanted in a soil that already has slow release fert...so I don't think I need to feed them. I won't be using this soil next time. Do you continue feeding them even after having transplanted them in a more rich soil?

    Hi Garry and thank you for your videos and time. Question? Last video you used worm castings in your seed mix. This video your not using worm castings but instead soluble fertilizer after the fact. Which way is better in your opinion?

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      So for the seed starts to keep it simple the soluble works just fine. I like adding in some casting at the start or at pot up for beneficial bacteria and growth benefits. I do see a benefit with the casting added in. Oddly I find when I use castings there is a delay in germination too. So dont over use it.

    I have a question about the feeding, as my plants are older due to my last frost date being in mid-March. I used fresh worm castings from my personal worm bin in my transplant potting mix when I put my seedlings into 16 oz plastic cups, and now I'm finding baby worms occasionally peeking out of the bottoms of the cups. Because of the baby worms, should I use an Organic water soluble fertilizer instead of synthetic for my young plants?

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So the synthetics at low doses wont hurt the worms. You would really need to jack up the concentration and at that point youd hurt the plants too. If you have organic though I would use that first.

    What would be the effects of using old nutrients? Say I bought a box of organic liquid nutrients back in 2015, forgot about them till recent and now want to try them. I have read that they are no longer good, but does that mean they'd be bad to use? Or just like prescription meds, it looses it's potency after so long and wouldn't hurt the plants, just not give them potent nutrients?

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN

      Nada. They dont go bad. So NPK are elements. Elements never go bad. You just want to make sure you can just mix it as it is directed.

    I have all my peppers in one 36 pellet Jiffy peat pod tray under a light. Some peppers have germinated and some not yet. Do I need to remove the sprouted ones since the clear cover stays on for the moisture of the non-germinated seeds or can the sprouts handle staying under the clear cover?

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN

      SO i am working on a video now for using hydrogen peroxide as a soil drench. Looks like 4 cups of water to 1 cup 3% hydrogen peroxide is what I will be recommending Just bottom water. The soil soaks up the mix and it is suppose to kill larvae. I did dose testing on tomatoes. A 2 cup water to 1 cup 3% h202 did NOT hurt the plants. 4:1 seems safe but I have not tested it on anything but tomatoes.

      They have to be thinned down to one cell or cup. My videos pretty much show the back size for things. When they are like 2 centimeter high, thin them. But it is best to stat 2 seeds per cell or cup so you dont have to thin them,

    Hello Gary, your videos are so Awesome thank you for sharing your knowledge and mentoring! This is my first-year seedling; trying to grow Jalapenos, Chiltapins and Hot Sweet Peppers. Starting my seedling indoors, my friend talked me into using little peat moss pots covering them with plastic wrap for the green house affect. When it comes time for the feeding process, can I set the peat moss pots in trays with the fertilizer feeding water solution as well or would that ruin the pots? Lastly, does Amazon sell the water soluble fertilizer 1-1-1 NPK solution or do you have to buy water soluble fertilizer and then break it down to that ratio? Again, thank you for your mentoring, I so appreciate it!!!

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can feed the peat pellet pots in a tray from the bottom, just like cells. Fish emulsion is a 5-1-1. You can use that at 1/2 strength to start but it stinks. I would try any chemical water soluble and 1/4 or less strength. Just use it like a watering. Less is more.
