The Dream Team Whelping Box

We have tried a few different whelping box and we find that this is the most convenient whelping box that works for us. We decided to use a 4x3 cage and all rails around it. The reason why we like this setup is because you can be at a distance and still see what the mom is doing with her pups. With solid board walls, you dont know what she is doing unless you look over the top. Let us know what you guys think.

I had a couple questions! I’ve seen a lot of breeders use carpets and rugs, but I’m wondering how they’re cleaned. About how often do you change out the rug?And when you replace it with a new one, do you just hose the other down to clean it? We’re using reusable whelping pads but it gets pretty dirty in there (also smells pretty strong) even with mom cleaning. So we change it out and clean the area 1-2x a day. Our puppies just turned 3 weeks.
I want to make sure we’re doing things right and efficiently. Thank you!! Sorry I wrote a book.

I buy the carpet protector tape like stuff. One side is sticky and comes in a roll. I put un on my carpet then there is a water proof barrier. I also pick a few blankets to put a layer on then layer 3 on top. So it never soakes through to the next set. Worked amazing for many litters over the last 10 years. And works great after whelping. I am able to strip it down and wipe and disinfect the carpet protector then add fresh blankets. I change at least ones a day because mom is still bleeding then by 3 weeks theg are in food and mom won't clean the pee and poop any more so I change as needed. But buy that age ours are going to the scent attractive puppy pads

Very well done. How long do you leave mom in the whelping box with the pups? How many times a day do you bring her in? New to this and really love your style/dogs.

If your female had a litter before and known to do good with her pups, I would leave her in there 24/7. But if it's her first time, I would monitor her and see how she reacts to the pups. Most females will accept them and care for them. For 1st time females, I put her in only when feeding and leave her in there for a hour and monitor her. See if she cleans pups or care for them. She if shes rough or not.
