To add to my preparations, I added colored whelping ribbon collars, a clipboard with weight and birth data tracking sheets - one per puppy to go home with buyer, also Vaseline for thermometer, and coconut oil or ky jelly for mom lubricant. In addition, I have a 2L bottle ready to add hot tap water and bundled in towel as a heat source, plus a warm box with heating pad (I made thick heating pad covers closed with Velcro to keep pups out, and a thick cord cover to protect from chewing,) to move pups away for a few minutes from a birthing mom. I have space heaters and a heat lamp set on timers for when temp drops at night, as well as a thermometer inside the whelping box. Also ready with flashlight, camera and extra camera batteries. A basket of clean cotton hand towels, a laundry basket and a trash can for soiled pads or newspapers. I also have a probiotic to stop puppy diarrhea. And a bottle of whiskey, That's for me.

I believe having a tube feeding starter kit with different sized tubes and syringes. At times we have aspiration or even have had a pup with a cleft pallet and these things can both cause death if not handled and you never want to wait for a pharmacy to open when tube feeding is needed

my current whelping kit includes, thermometer for temp checks, alcohol swabs, iodine wipes, gloves, waxless dental floss ( alternative to heavy plastic cord clips), blunt tip medical scissors, bottles, milk replacer, puppy ID collars, heating pad, scales, syringe bulb, lots of towels, mats and blankets. I am yet to get the disinfectant. I have hesitated on calcium as aussie vets for some reason don't recommend it? she has a nice safe whelping box with "pig rails", aka edes around the inside that puppies can roll under, preventing mama dog from accidentally crushing them against the wall. other then that, I have my vets number on hand in case she needs an emergency trip to the vet in labour.
I was happy to see that you are in Australia. Where do you get your bulb syringes from please?
I would still have calcium on hand, even though vets don't reccomend. It's your dog, and you don't want to lose her.☺☺

My must have is a canister of Esbilac Goats Milk Replacer Powder. There are many brands to chose from but when I have had to bottle feed in the past this was much easier on their tummies and more acceptable to their pallets then standard puppy milk replacer.
I think I have everything on the list (need to order more Oral Cal plus). I always start with a new digital thermometer each litter (or new one every 6 months) . Looking forward to seeing what the new whelping pads are about. Thanks! Great reminders. I also have a box with a heating pad in the bottom and towel placed over it to have on hand so if pups need to be temporarily moved (for mama to give birth to other pups) the first few pups can be kept warm. my vet said not to use calcium, he said at most I can use the puppy milk replacer I have on hand, what are your views on the differences in vet opinions in regards to this?
I am a new breeder of Schnauzers and need to know, How much will all this cost me? Also how do you give the puppies the colostrum substitute? Are the most absorbent pads still available at the cost mentioned in this video?

My vet told me not to give her calcium supplements while preggy because she may need it during welping. I didnt understand what Calsorb was exactly and what it was used for. My bitch is due 11/11. PEOPLE ORDER THIS FROM THE START!! YOU WILL SAVE A LOT OF MONEY!! I just had to order it, on a Saturday, from Amazon Prime, and it was $29.83! There are generics but would not be delivered until 11/15...way too late...but they were as low as $12.99. Thank you and good luck everyone!!
How do I disinfect the umbilical cord? Do I add the iodine before I cut and after? Or on the cord where I cut? And how often do I need to apply iodine?

Good morning Maya, I'm sorry we aren't able to comment on products we don't have such as the dog calcium tabs in your country. I would recommend if you don't have anything else available to go ahead and use that. It would be better than nothing at all. I would also recommend grinding a tablet in 10 cc of warm water to orally dose it. 😊She may not chew the tablet this would a way to get it down her quicker. Sheryl at Revival
