    Hi - great car! Your car has a Wilson preselector gearbox coupled to the engine with a 'fluid flywheel. The system is a bit like an automatic gearbox and torque convertor, except that the gears don't change automatically. You have to select whatever gear you are going to need next and then when you want to actually change into that gear you press the left pedal firmly and release it. Before you try to start the engine make sure the gearbox is in neutral by selecting neutral on the quadrant and then dipping and releasing the left hand pedal. Once the engine is running select Reverse on the quadrant, dip and release the selector pedal, let off the handbrake, give it some accelerator and the car should move backwards. All sounds a bit odd, but fine once you get the hang. Good luck!

      I think this has what is called a PRESELECTOR gearbox.

    • @TheByard
      @TheByard 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      This type of gearbox were fitted to London red double deckers. I never drove one but did drive an ERF 7 ton flat bed, it had a Gardner 5 cylinder engine the extra cylinder was for towing a drag trailer, there was also an extra hand brake lever on the passenger side. So the trailer boy could operate the trailers brakes on down hills etc. No synchromesh on the gears so you had to get the revs right when changing gears, no power steer so a journey was a work out, strong legs were needed to brake as again no power assistance. I fitted cruise control by way of a length of wood jammed between the gas pedal and under the dash, a quick kick and it released, great for the journey from London to Chepstow in S. Wales.
      The truck was part exchanged for a new Leyland from Watt's Gloucester and I have found a photo of it fully restored in the grey livery of Chas Brand & Sons. Civil Engineers the company I worked for. Have tried to find the new owner to share some stories but no luck so far.

      @@TheByard I didn't mention it - but I certainly remember the buses heaving a pre-selector gesrbox!
      I don't know if Daimler cars were reliable or not, after the Queen's father gave up on them. But I do remember delays (in the 1980's) in getting to work - when Daimler rear-engined buses sometimes had to stop at the side of the road to be fixed. Overheating, I think!

    • @TheByard
      @TheByard 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@nygelmiller5293 As a kid I learnt to drive my uncles Ferguson grey tractor and so was fascinated and confused watching my dad change gears in the Armstrong and his column change Bedford van then the bus drivers confused me even more with preselect. The LCC Daimler ambulances were the same.
      Even more confusing was driving a Neal's yard crane. With the front of the swing cab pointing over the rear wheels of the undercarriage you had to turn the steer wheel the opposite way you wanted to turn. You were in fact reversing the crane but facing backwards.

It intrigues me that it still has a UK registration (lisense plate) after all these years. Furthermore, it appears to be a collectible/personalisable number and it surprises me it was not removed and sold when the car left the UK.

    Be careful with the gas/carb cleaner. I know you know that. As a child my dad raced at the local fairgrounds track. We always had a race car in our back yard. He did that trick and flame jumped back at him and he came home from the hospital as a mummy. He was quick healing and we all were thankful. So even though I would have likely done the same thing, it is dangerous. I love your knowledge of nearly everything. Love all you vehicles too! 🤟🏼🤍

    My 1958 Volkswagon had turn signals like yours!!! It was imported and the MPH were measured in kilometers! My first car after graduation,,,,,,oh the memories!!! Thanks for sharing. Great to see Hans again. PS Nice to see the dark circles under your eyes gone, change is good!

    Normally a car restoration doesn't real interest me, but I was fascinated watching you by "trial and error" to get that car started. It's a beautiful car and it would be great to get it up and running.
