THANK YOU this tip saved me so much time while in front of O’Reilly Auto. The new Alt. didn’t fit used this and slipped right in after. I got wife and kids back home and felt like a badass!
I literally just changed my wife's alternator out this morning at a truck stop 3 hrs from home and wondered how to move those bushings. And yes I used my hammer, NOW I know what to do for the future... Thank You!!!
Great tip. Was having a bad day working on the Sierra 1500. Had hammer in hand but thought I'd check you tube to see if I was missing anything. So glad I found this!
Good tip. But, all you have to do is remove both bolts, and lift one side of the alternator up. Give the alternator a wiggle and it will push the bushing in a little. Drop the alternator back into place and do the same on the other. Takes about 30 seconds.
Thanks this worked extremely well. Wiggled each side and it slid right in after bolt trick didnt work very well. Im glad i saw the first trick too tho or i woulda been woopin on it with my hammer😂
I cant remember if they do or not....Most have it in the case and backing off the bolt a few turns and a gentle tap with the hammer is all thats needed to free it up. Gentle that is lol.
David, thank you for the suggestion for the lower bushings. I took your suggestions and went to my local ACE hardware , purchased one bolt, one hollow sleeve, one nut and 2 washers. Took about 15 minutes total including the trip to ACE. Bushings were pushed back to allow the new alternator to be purchased in place. Great suggestion resulting in no additional damage to the bracket holding the alternator. Other site suggested using a hammer.😢
My first attempt at moving the bushings into place involved using a C clamp and the socket, but the bushings were extremely hard to move. My second attempt I found just the right bolt, washer, socket, washer, and nut combination, and although it was difficult to make them move, they did eventually move. Thanks Dave! Thank you! Used this exact tip this morning and avoided damaging the “ears”. Alternator replacement went well except for one little “gotcha”. For clumsy DIY-ers like me…keep one of those telescoping magnets handy….yeah, I dropped a socket and it landed in the plastic motor shield below ….retrieved it and all ok!
What I hope people take away from this. The procedure you demonstrated can apply to more then just this application. Another great video David. Thanks!
Great tip. Another good tip to recommend. If the intake tube is removed to get to the tensioner for loosing the belt. Be sure to connect it back BEFORE starting the engine. Otherwise, the replace mass air sensor diagnostic trouble code will report.
Thanks for the tip on the bushings, I had to put 2 alternators in my Silverado today (first one was doa) I have fought them before not knowing this trick and it saved my a lot of frustration. So thank you.
Simple and to the Point. Great Video. Wow No Music ! Like all other videos. Don't get me wrong I love music . But not on an informative Video , it's just annoying. Thanks Great job.
A car is a car....right? lol. Actually not. I am just getting back to learning on different brands....its a bit refreshing actually. Plus this one is owned by someone whose company has alot of Dodge trucks that I work on so.....lol
That's the ki d of tip only experience mechanics from honest shops actually do. I'm not a mechanic but a parts replacer. I do know how to fabricate and dictate what to do in most given situations. My particular career has led me down that road haha
@@MotorCityMechanic it was for doing it with the c clamp style ball joint / u joint press. It really worked. Kept everything nice and lined up. I'll send a link if I can find it.
Hey man great helpful video. One critique - 38 seconds of intro for a 3 min video was way overkill. Just hit us up with the content, we don't need fancy intros. Have a good day and thanks for the tip.
@MotorCity Mechanicc. That 13 mm ratcheting wrench, just wondering is that a facom wrench or Mac I was looking at getting a set of the facom ratcheting wrenches are they any good and or worth buying PS I like the channel you do great work
that's clever. minutes ago just replaced another denso alternator on my car for the 3rd time (297K) barely made it home last night. it's been a hot humid summer guess i use ac too much
That’s very crafty but I have a question ? Why are the bushings there from the factory ?? If you don’t need them when you replace the altenator ? What if you buy a GM replacement, is this trick needed ? Or only for aftermarket? Am I the only one that feels dumb right now , what am I missing ? Please educate me
Can a squealing and grinding noise just be the alternator pulley? My noise is coming from the alternator. But truck starts fine and no battery light on. Truck been sitting for 3 months in this cold weather. But like i said still fires up.
My name is Gene, I have a 2014 Ram with a 3.6L V6. I'm wondering what the canister thing in the front of the engine. I think it's for the EGR system, or the E vac. system. Could you clarify that for me. Thanks for your Videos. Very good

What ever
I broke the power steering bracket it sits on lol
Did thus worked and saved time no struggle. I did use a Lil penetration oil.
Love tips like this.
Much of the time that I lose doing auto repairs is to little details like this.
Appreciate the time and money saving tip
I always roll my eyes when the knuckle draggers say: "git a bigger 'mer".
Great tip David, thanks for posting!
Reminds me.....I need a new hammer lol. Just kidding. Thanks Brandon for watching.
I could swear my Gen 2 Ram has a similar bushing on the alternator mount. I like the format. Thanks, David!

Not even my year model truck, but watched anyway...this is genius.
All I could say is THANK U 🙏🏼!… I am literally stuck w/ the alternator out thinking how in the world I was going to move those bushings.

There are 2 age old sayings when doing manual labor, " Work smarter not harder and Let leverage be your friend". Thanks for sharing the tip.
Great tip, the hardest part was getting the right size carriage bolt for my sockets, 2” bolt worked, thanks
What I hope people take away from this. The procedure you demonstrated can apply to more then just this application. Another great video David. Thanks!
Fantastic tip David. Ran into this problem on my daughter's 4.7 ltr jeep
Thanks John! Much appreciated

Excellent tip. Clear, concise and to the point presentation. Very well done!
I have broken a few brackets using a hammer. Thanks for setting me on the right approach.

Outstanding Tip!!. Made replacing the alternator on my 2004 GMC Sierra a piece of cake. Glad I came across your video. Thank you..
Great tip. Here's a another tip make sure the alternator your installing is the current amperage. Don't put a 160a when you need a 100a
Very true…..some times there are multiple options. Brake rotors are the worst when it comes to that on some cars
Simple and to the Point. Great Video.
Wow No Music ! Like all other videos. Don't get me wrong I love music . But not on an informative Video , it's just annoying.

Great job.
This was helpful for even just taking it off and cleaning the ground part of the alternator. Thanks
Very cool tip I’ll be sure to look for more of your videos
Outstanding tip. Do not want to deal with replacing that mounting bracket.
Appreciate it man I just watched a guy do that with a hammer and I have a 03’ Tahoe with a 5.3L thanks for that tip
Thank you! This bushing is the exact reason I searched for this video!
Just realized that you are in Grovetown. I am across the river in North Augusta
If you ever need any help or work Dave do your vehicles....search google maps for “the Motorcity Mechanic Garage”.....I have my own shop now
Glad the video helped
Just when I thought I had seen it all in 2020... Here's Dave working on a Chevy. 😀

Now that’s a great video right there! Thanks so much for the info I’m having issues with my battery hopefully it’s not the alternator.
Hopefully it isn’t but if it is then you know what to do
Great tip regarding pushing the bushing and with the socket thank you
Thank you for sharing, I was using channel lock pliers, but you have a better solution.
Thanks Adam for taking the time to comment

David Pike - thanks for your awesome tips. Love your content. Very helpful.
Your welcome and thanks for the kind words.
That is exactly what I did the other day. Great tip
I used a similar method to press bearing caps onto a u joint. It works 1000x better than a hammer, with less risk of breaking stuff!!
Thanks for that tip....might have to try it one day. Appreciate you watching and for being a subscriber

I'm lucky to have watched your video in advance because I would start hammering away.
You can use a rubber mallet like i did and it works just as well.

Thanks! Who knows why the dislikes....there is always a few in every video I post
why does your 2006 Z-71 Silverado still over charge after replacing the alternator?
It ran normal for two days and then the charge hand dropped back over pass the red and on down.
This is very good advice and it worked well for me.
Video idea. 08 ram 2500. Steering play. Common causes specific to this model?
Really appreciate your work.
Hey excellent video! Are you able to tell me what the standard alternator was that came with the 5.3 LS 4 x 2 motor
Wow, work smarter not harder........ Thanks sooooooo much!!!!!
Thank you so much for this video! Your tips saved me from myself.

That's a _great tip!_ Saves me from whacking off that bolt boss. Instead, I'll save my sledge hammer for beating in knock sensors.
