    Da Vinci wrote a lot of his journals in "mirror script" not because he wants to hide his ideas but because he was left handed and writing backwards (from right to left) allowed him to drag his hand along the page without smudging the writing.

    One of the details that made Da Vinci's apprentice work on the angel painting impressive was that he deliberately ignored the original sketch and created a design of his own. In particular, it was entirely his idea to depict the far left angel's halo as a three-dimensional disc positioned partially in front of the back of her head.

      I favour this theory:
      The Mona Lisa is a study in how the human eye "sees"!
      Peripheral vs forward looking vision.
      When you look at the smile directly..it is smaller and contracted compared with viewing her smile with peripheral vision...as when you look upon the landscape in background but see smile from a sideway glance...it broadens widely as the multilayered darker shadowing in her right side was designed to do.

    • @alexawriting1629
      @alexawriting1629 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I think he's one of the few historical figures who can be posthumously diagnosed accurately. He had textbook ADHD. I have ADHD-Primarily Inattentive (previously known as ADD), so I've gone on several research binges on this. His mentor actually said Da Vinci would be great if he would just focus on one thing (and this was when he was a kid), so he had symptoms from childhood, which is the key in distinguishing it from other disorders. He also had emotional dysregulation, which is considered a symptom, although it was ultimately not added to the DSM. I forgot why it wasn't. He was probably ADHD-PI, though he could be ADHD-Combined too. I wish his ADHD was mentioned more often because it seems to be an integral part of who he was. And ADHD kids do need to have ADHD successes to look up to.
      ADHD is MUCH more pervasive than people give it credit for. Like everything down to his imposter syndrome can be connected to ADHD. It was also what made him as great as he was, but there's no doubt he struggled with it too. ADHD is a total double-edged sword, and he is a fantastic example of that. Having a constant frustration about things never being done or perfect or brilliant or world-changing is extremely common in ADHD, including me. That similarity in Da Vinci is what convinces me to 100% he had it.

    Great video. Could you possibly, please, please, do a video on Archimedes, the greatest mathematician of antiquity? As was Leonardo, Archimedes was millennia ahead of his time, a guy who nearly invented calculus in the sense that he used its methods without formally defining a theory way before Newton and Leibnitz came along. He also happens to be the first person ever to express numbers in base 10 which is a huge improvement over the clumsy methods of the ancients for expressing numbers.

    I once heard a theory that the mona lisa was either Leonardo in drag or his "beloved" apprentice in drag and that he was always changing its little details because he saw the subject every day.

    • @acetate909
      @acetate909 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've read that as well. It's been a theory batted around for a long time and some make a compelling argument. I've linked an article that breaks it down and gives some picture evidence and further explanation of the theory.

      It's been proposed by art scholars and historians for decades. I guess they're all weird as well. If you've studied any of this and know a little about psychology it makes a lot of sense. It will probably never be known for sure who the subject was but you should open your mind a little because the world and history are big and weird.

    • @acetate909

      Think about it for a minute. Even in his own time people thought Leonardo was homosexual and that is still widely believed today. The penalty for this was death so it makes sense that he would keep it a secret. Secondly, think about what kind of pictures people hang on their walls and cherish the most, that of their family and lovers. Leonardo obviously had a very deep attachment to this painting as he kept traveling and tinkering with it throughout his life. He was never married and was never even known to have a female lover yet he did have a 20 year long intimate relationship with his apprentice who just happens to look exactly like Mona Lisa. The only reason I can fathom for you calling this theory weird is that you may have some misguided and bigoted views towards gay people and if that's true it's a shame.

    Any Da Vinci enthusiasts out there know why he did that?

    • @swetpmnkygrl
      @swetpmnkygrl 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Most likely because a bat wing is much easier to imitate with wood and cloth, the wood replacing the bones of a bat's wing and cloth the skin stretched over the bones.
      A bird's wing is dependent on the bird's feathers which would be much harder to imitate on a larger scale.
