I’m so happy you guys are here!! Thank you for being patient with me as I was moving. I’m ready to hop back into reactions and this was definently an interesting one to start with!🤣🤣 I hope you guys enjoy!!❤️❤️
With "listen before I go" she actually had some real life thought's of suicide, and also said that in a hotel room, she could imagine herself jumping out the window. Just some context :)
You need to watch the videos from this era. Revolutionary and disturbing. So good. Notes on "Wish You Were Gay": While She did write it wishing that his sexuality was the reason he rejected her, it later came out that He... actually is. Of course, so is She, so it all works out in the end. lol
I think the note on xanny is the opposite actually.. " cant afford to love someone who isn't dying by mistake" I take it to mean that she cant afford to love someone who is purposely hurting themselves by consuming substances
I think what makes it interesting is that Billie uses a double negative: I CANT afford to love someone who ISNT dying by mistake. I think it means that every person she loves and cares about is succumbing to drug abuse. Idk, just a different perspective:)
Goodbye is her waking up. When you wake up you remember your most recent dreams so that’s why she see sings the last from the last track back to track 1. Each song represents a different dream or thought you have: being the bad guy, ruling the world, sad thoughts etc
When you know that ilomilo is actually an arcade game, in which the characters Ilo and Milo are separated and the whole plot is to bring them back together, a lot of the meanings of the song make more sense. Your interpretation is still correct, but the fact that it intertwines with a game that well is so mesmerizing to me.
Song #5 ATGGGTH is mostly about climate change. Wealthy people might save themselves in their gated heavens, but the there is only so much space and resources that their poorer friends don't have. we should check out the mv for this song &some of the others. I think she's had the ideas & plans for most of them. & I think she was still a minor when all this happened.
Even as a minor, she had the mentality and awareness to warn people about the climate change and now the 2025 really started with the californian hills on fire (28:59)
When she says “I can’t afford to love someone who isn’t dying by mistake” she’s essentially saying she can’t afford to be with someone who abuses substances because they’re “k*lling themselves” with the stuff they’re using, she needs someone who would “d*e by mistake” and not by a product of their own damaging actions.
I thought Billie was saying all the people she befriends end up abusing substances and it just so happens all her potential romantic partners end up experimenting with substances that she cannot afford to be complacent/complicit to someone’s demise
i first heard listen before i go on billie’s first ever tour in 2017 when it was unreleased and called ‘listen’ and it’s been my all time favorite billie song ever since. it’s so beautiful and so raw and so painful,, i love it so much
the gift to listen to an album for the first time. also you need to listen to her first EP (don’t smile at me) where she was first discovered with the song ocean eyes.
I think you should watch The World's a Little Blurry. It's a documentary that follows Billie and Finneas while they were making this album. It offers deeper insight into their songwriting and creative process, as well as providing context for the songs and Billie’s life during that time. It's an amazing documentary. Whether you make a reaction video or not, it's definitely worth watching. Ps if you do end up watching it, I recommend you listen to her EP don’t smile at me, first because you can hear many of the songs in the documentary as well
1:07:54 I love you is about her best friend XXXTENTACION dying, I’m pretty sure he left earth when Billie was 15 or 16 and she wrote this song at 16 and released the album at 17
I love you is about her ex bf Q and it’s kinda mentioned in her doc. 6.18.18 was specifically about xxx tho. Both were written around the same time though
When I think About xanny, I feel like it's so much deeper than we think! I feel like she was literally like 16, hanging out with people in their 20's, dating older men. Ofc she was still drinking coke when the others were using substances! It's unfortunate that she was even caround adult situations so young! I'm glad to see her healing.
ilomilo, i love you and listen before i go are still one of my absolute favorite songs of hers. while i think her wrtiting grew over the years, some of those songs have just the vibe that is so good and will never get old. you have to check out her two EPs as well! don't smile at me is so fun for something she did with her brother at like just 15. guitar songs has just 2 songs, but they are both really good and probably some of my fav writing of hers! would also love for you to check out finneas as well! especially recommend "blood harmony" and "optimist", which are my personal fav projects of his. he is less experimental than billie with his music, but his vocals are amazing and he is a great songwriter. he also made a new album recently, but i personally prefer this two older projects a little more.
ilomilo is about separation anxiety, it's named after a game with the same title, it's a puzzle game where you have to bring the two characters Ilo and Milo together
yssmiac is such a soundtrack song. What I mean by that is that I don't listen to it by itself, but when it appears in a movie/TV show I love it and it really fits. Whenever a character comes in badassly or does something edgy or makes a big deal out of a bad thing they do and this song comes in, it's really exciting. CW's Dynasty reboot, Marvel's Agatha All Along and Netflix's School of Good and Evil are the examples I can think of rn.
In ATGGGTH at the end when Billie says “ I cannot do the snowflake!” She was actually in the process of crocheting a snowflake to put on her Christmas tree. It was just a funny little clip that was added I think.
helpful to note that the motif of burying a friend is real in this album. a friend of hers was murdered when she was relatively new to the industry. for the final three songs: "listen before i go" is sort of a s*icide note, "i love you" is about the fear of hurting your loved ones with your s*icide, or being fearful of becoming attached to others because of your mental illness, and "goodbye" ties together the rest of the album, encapsulating her struggles as a teenager with mental illness and grief who was in the industry at a young age. while it seemed un-serious, in control, or fun at the beginning of the album ("im the bad guy! duh!") by the end she sounds exhausted and beaten down saying the exact same phrases. the listeners are now in on her thoughts, behind the mask of nonchalance.
Tell me if im wrong, but, burry a friend is about xxxtentacion, right? God, i was so young when i was listening to her music- And i felt also so bad in my life, but she really helped me. I've found her music when i was 13/14 (she 2 yo and half older then me), i've know her with "Ocean eyes" first and "idontwannabeyouanymore". And maybe one year later, i've listend to her first album. I was so young so i didn't really understand what she was saying (because english is not my mother tongue, i'm French), but i did understand a lot. Now i can understand anything (or almost). So, all times i listen to her old music, i understand new things.. So i cry harderrrr every time 🥲 I love Billie so much.
I would give so much to hear When we all fall ssleep, where do we go?like the first time i heard it, back when bad guy was booming, literally this fucking album saved my life
1:11:05 the song goodbye goes from “I love you” all the way up to “Bad Guy” and takes a line from every songs and we work backwards to end the song with the first tracks
You should try to react to her "The World's a little blurry" documentary. It's from when she was recording this album and it'll help you understand a little more how she felt back in those days
"call me friend but keep me closer" I believe is like a play on "keep your friends close but your enemies closer" so she is saying she's treated like the enemy or something lol it's crazy how many ways we interpret music Also i think its called 8 because its also the 8th track My Strange Addition has clips from the office, i hear that's her favorite show
Far as I've heard, this song was a response to a lot of people (industry and otherwise) wanting her to dress sexier or less like she wanted. She doubled down in her comfy wear what I want but also made this song and MV about how if she were to dress "sexier" it'd be dangerous. A literal warning sign. Keep in mind that she made it in the industry when she was underage. So them wanting her to dress up more is creepy as hell.
At 39:33 i think by “call me friend but keep me closer” refers to like the saying keep your friends close but your enemies closer which reflects like how this person is saying all these positive things to her but isn’t following through or treating her like they say they are
I always interpreted it as someone who kind of leads you on. The type who says you are just friends but wants to cuddle and do couple things and reap all the benefits of being with someone without saying we’re together.
In the song “Goodbye” she repeats all the songs in order from last to first because when you die your life flashes in front of you (from most recent to when you were born) , so I believe she wanted to make it feel like the whole album “flashes” in front of you at the end
hi neecee love your reactions!! you should react to the album preacher's daughter by ethel cain, it's a beautiful concept album and i'd love to see your take on it
the line "who isn't dying by mistake" refers to her feeling unable to love someone who is doing drugs. she is taking the perspective like "doing drugs is slowly killing yourself," so she is saying this person is not dying by mistake, rather by hurting their body until they die from drug use. she can't afford to love someone who is knowingly killing themselves (and who isn't going to die by mistake e.g. car accident, health issue, natural death, etc)
I love you is about the guy in my pfp ( xxxtentacion) he was an artist who eventually got close with billie eilish until he tragically passed away by getting shot below the neck 9 times in a robbery in his car, after buying a motorcycle. Billie eilish was singing this song and randomly burst out into tears because of xxxtentacions death.
when the partys over may seem familiar as nicki minaj sampled it on her new pink friday 2 album in her intro song about her father and how her son never got to meet him!!
Watch the video for Bad Guy. She rips a hole in the wall and climbs in, and the Invisalign bit is playing, she takes it out of her mouth, and hands it to the security guard standing there, and he just lets her put a saliva-coated thing in his hand. It’s the perfect intro for that song.
the context on listen before i go,this was supposed to be her last song before she commited so thats what she meant by sorry cant save me now and take me to the rooftop.(she was going to commit on a balcony)
i take ilomilo as her having paranoia especially about her loved ones dying or something and she needs the reassurance from them that they are safe. i may be reaching but that’s how i relate to the song anyway lmao also ilomilo is a video game and that’s why the sounds in this song are very video game-like
that kinda is what ilomilo is about, billie said ilomilo was her fav game and that it was about like losing someone and then finding each other again so it’s basically the fear of losing someone you lobe
On xanny I thought Billie was saying all the people she befriends end up abusing substances and it just so happens all her potential romantic partners end up experimenting with substances and she cannot afford to be complacent/complicit to someone’s demise. *Neecee, I love the way your brain works. The snowflake at the end of “all the good girls..” It was actually just a sound bite of billie as she was I believe crocheting a snowflake..but couldn’t finish it 🤣

I need you to react to her debut EP "don´t smile at me", she was like 13-14 when she record it and I think you are going to love it
Her EP before this album is also insanely good!
