- 'But Not For Me' - Solo Jazz piano lesson. For how to really play this try the version by Joe Chindamo (from Melbourne Australia)

By comparison this is rather pale! Nevertheless, with the added text comments, some students of jazz piano might get some ideas. Wouldn't it be great though, if some of the real greats did this - explain why they played this or that while improvising on a song that we knew well.
It may br difficult to read the notation - a much clearer version (in stereo) is at
web.newsguy.com...
If you want to see this or other videos in high quality video to see the notes clearly(and in stereo), add the letters &fmt=18 straight after the existing internet address line above.
Certainly not "pale"! Really lovely to listen to, informative and inspirational. Thankyou.
I really like the way you break up the stride with block chords in swing figures and quarter note triplets (and the like), but never lose the easy swing feel of the piece. Wonderful playing!
You have the softest touch I've ever seen!
Very fine playing of a very fine song; both good music and a good instructional video.
I know I'm a new subscriber, AND i absolutely LOVE almost all of you Jazz song recordings, but as a singer I want to PLEAD WITH YOU ON MY BENDED KNEES...DO THE INTROS!!! Songs Like ALL WE KNOW, NIGHTINGALE SANG IN BARKLEY SQUARE, BLAME IT ON MY YOUTH, BUT NOT FOR ME, LITTLE GIRL BLUE, ETC. SONGS like Hang My Tears Out To Dry, like others where you absolutely DO INCLUDE the INTRO are ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC. i USE THEM NOT ONLY TO PRACTICE MY PITSH AND INTONATION, BUT YOUR SUBTLE PHRASING MAKES IT EASIER TO SING WITH OTHER MUSICIANS instead of me making them match my phrasing, THANK YOU FOR MAKING ME A BETTER SINGER
Thanks again, Doug - wonderful. The tuft of hair appearing at 2:25 was a nice touch!
Doug, I've run out of adjectives and superlatives to compliment your playing. ;-)
The way you mix your single note lines with block chording does it for me every time.
I keep coming back to this one - great arrangement. And i love this song. Agreed with your writeup btw - Joe Chindamo's version is incredible.
magnificient, I love your commentary! Skill, I love jazz and Gerschwin, you make it look simple, when I know it ain't!
It was very beautiful, technical and with some exciting chords. My compliment!
Actually, there are a few note-for-note transcription music books of Bill's best-known tunes, both solo, and in trio format, but not a great visual of his hands with the music like this. This is so great, don't you agree?
Best versión i ever heard.
Yes, Really Master Class of Chords Block lines, I love it.
Great!
Thanks for teaching and encouraging.
Wonderful solo!
I found myself clapping at the end!
Very inspiring.
You make it look so simple, and so it drives me mad ! How do you do it? What the best thing to practice. Its taken me fifteen years to learn a trill! Where do you play?
Wow, do you know where any of these books are available? I agree with you that this instruction is like gold-dust for those of us struggling to improve : )
Thanks very much. I will buy some!!
I bought five Bill Evans books from SheetMusicPlus on the internet. They ship quickly and prices are fair. They usually show one sample page of the actual music and the complete contents along with reviews by people who have bought the music.
Can I buy this from your sheet music Doug??
Nice preformance. Thanks Doug. I agree, it would be great if Bill Evans had left us some instruction!!
Lots of great techniques here! ... I always thought this tune was in Eb? not that it matters!
superb :)
6 stars!
Makes me want to go shopping at Nordstroms.
hahaa
