Somewhere over the rainbow chords are fairly straight-forward to learn.
Most famously associated with the film The Wizard of Oz, ‘Over The Rainbow’ has also been played by many great jazz musicians over the years.
The tune follows an AABA form and the chord changes are quite repetitive making it an easy tune for beginners to learn and memorise.
We will start off with some very simple voicings and then add some bigger two handed chords.
Because the A section of the tune repeats itself 3 times, we will look at some interesting chord substitutions that can be used to liven up the tune and add variety to the performance.
This Somewhere over the rainbow piano lesson is designed for beginner jazz piano students.

This is an exemplary rendition. Most other accomplished pianists wildly run arpeggios and chords, forgetting the intent of the melody and distorting the harmony and tempo to the point the song becomes unrecognizable!

Thank you for this. I play by ear, and my family thinks I can play anything because of it, but they really don't understand how limited I feel by not being able to read music or play comfortably in any key other than C (thankful for my keyboard that lets me transpose). This song has always been a challenge for me, so thanks so much for breaking it down. Cheers! -Ken

Thank you so much. Your videos help my ear get familiar with the sound of the extensions /upper structures. Yet, I would dare to suggest an alternative in bar 6 of the bridge. I like the idea of the tritones but, what you"re really doing, by using them, is replacing the A half-diminished with an A diminished 7, which is sort of giving away the D7 that comes next. What if we played Eb-A / G-C (tritone and P4th) on the A half-diminished and keep the Eb-A / F#-C (the all-tritone figure) for the D7?

Lovely tutorial, beautiful chords and voicing, Just a minor observation: I found it a bit confusing that right at the beginning you say it starts with an Eb maj7 chord while you play a plain Eb major chord, and then you say it is followed by a Cm 7 while you play a Cm ninth chord. Thankfully you go slowly enough to make it easy to follow any way, so it is just a minor note. Thanks for the tutorial!

Somewhere over the rainbow, way up high
There's a land that I heard of once in a lullaby
Somewhere over the rainbow, skies are blue
And the dreams that you dare to dream
    Really do come true
Someday I'll wish upon a star
And wake up where the clouds are far behind me
Where troubles melt like lemon drops
    Away above the chimney tops
    That's where you'll find me
    Somewhere over the rainbow
    Bluebirds fly
    Birds fly over the rainbow
Why then, oh why can't I?
    If happy little bluebirds fly
    Beyond the rainbow
    Why, oh why can't I?

I enjoy your tutorials sir but I would like to ask a question. If, due to hand size and shape, one cannot reach a chord from thumb to pinky like you have in some of the chords presented here, what should they do? Any suggestion would be appreciated. I am relatively new to playing and I find that this problem arises from time to time. Thanks in advance.

Nice work, you have an appealing manner and approach - but you missed the obvious Bill Evans-y strategy of harmonizing the opening measures of iii - iii - biiidim7 - ii, etc. Or, along the same lines - oh, I'll just write the chord symbols, it's easier - am7b5 - abm6 -gm7 - f#dim7 - fm7, etc., or am7b5 - abm7 - Db7 - gm7 - Ab9 - gm7 - f#dim7 - fm7, etc. And on and on. You know where the bar lines are, you're obviously a good musician.

hello. very good work! thank you so much. A question about the song, I'm writing an arrangement to sing but I don't know what the "original" version is since Ella Fitzgerald's I think the lyrics she sings are longer and have more parts. That baffles me. Can you help me know which is the "correct" version? I'm sorry for my English. I write to you from Argentina. I loved your video and it helped me a lot to know what the correct chords were. a hug.

Really great stuff. I'm confused by the statement at 3:02, though. ii-V in F minor would be Gmi7b5-C7b9. You're playing a ii-bVII7, aka the backdoor dominant.

Can't find words to describe how beautiful and divine you make all this sound. I have always loved jazz but the way you play is so amazing that I have now come to love piano jazz. You have inspired me so much that I bought a digital piano and decided to learn playing piano! It's coming next week :) in fact I set a target to myself to play like you in a year from now (of course just the simple ones - I probably need 20 years to come close to your skills). Thank you for everything.
