Why would I, a British National, up and go to an island off the coast of a foreign continent, just to inform other British people that they are a long way from home?
Firstly, I am English. Also, the Faroe Island are a few 100km closer to the most northerly Scottish Island than Denmark, the Falkland Islands are closer to the South Pole than to us. Britain has 'discovered' a lot of places over the years which they relinquished after WWII because being a ruthless and domineering Empire doesn't quite have the same ring to it as it used to. The Falklands have 'belonged' to various different nations since the 16th c. atleast and it should have been given up a long time ago and then we wouldn't be in this mess. 10:00 The Roanoke story was only mentioned briefly but it's super creepy. The governor of the colony John White sailed back to England for supplies leaving behind his family and over 100 settlers. When he returned 3 years later they'd all vanished without a trace apart from the word Croatoan carved into a wooden post. To this day no one really knows what happened to them (although it's thought they were all massacred by a local Native American tribe named Croatoan). Still very creepy.
@@mouldy_bowl_of_primordial_4204 that’s far from true natives objectively killed more settlers . @@bendavis9564 Many died from European disease, that's sure. But there's been so many genocides that I hardly believe these genocides caused less casualties than Native American counterattacks. I'll look that up.
History social media pages make it out like it's a complete mystery when historians are 90% sure as to what happened to them. Roanoke was always intended as a temporary settlement so John White stated to the settlers before his voyage back to England to carve a message into the tree as to where they were relocating and to leave a maltese cross if it was by force, John White found no cross on the tree. The Croatoan was the name of the Native tribe that lived nearby and as historians have pointed out there were no signs of violence or forced relocation and no graves have ever been discovered there either. English settlers that came after the Roanoke colony also noted that certain Natives living in that area had European features. It's highly likely that the settlers simply moved in and married in with the Croatoan who were known for having good relations with the English settlers that came after.
I heard they were actually somewhat friendly with the Croatans. They even traded with them and most theorized they left the message to inform the English when they returned that they went to live with them so they wouldn't starve.

Are the Falklands even remotely near Britain; No. No one ever said 'Oh I'm just going to the Falkland Islands for the Bank Holiday Weekend'. It no more belongs to the British than Ibiza does. @Lucas Lo
Yeah but everyone there wants to be British and we discovered it before Argentina was even a country we also won the war. We have democracy, history and victory on our side, and you have what? It’s closer? Well the Faroe Islands are closer to us but you don’t see us whining to Denmark to give it to us, and rightly so, they belong to Denmark and we respect that.
To not look objectively at the matter is just pure Thatcherism.
It is creepy. But I really can't imagine the Natives planning a massacre on the settlers. The rest of the time it was the other way round.
@@mouldy_bowl_of_primordial_4204 that’s far from true natives objectively killed more settlers . The settlers were really good at lying to them and taking their land so it’s not like it was for no reason. Although when it comes to out right murdering the natives take it by a long shot. Most of them died from disease.

@@PatrickB32 Because it was an island, precisely. If it had been a continental empire, it would have been invaded by Spain, France or Germany, in the 16th, 19th and 20th centuries. I'm from Glasgow in Scotland and we went through a period where a lot of the old sandstone buildings were knocked down (not all of them were, the people trying to redevelop our city got their act together), and I went to Edinburgh for a job interview a couple of weeks ago and realised that we are the only city that done this but they also managed to sort of blend the old and the new together and it looks fantastic, where as in Glasgow you get beautiful sandstone buildings that used to be tenements that are now just rows of flats with normal bricks covering up the holes they made in the large restoration of the city that wound up failing and with the creation of several new towns including Drumchapel in Clydebank and Cumbernauld in the middle of fricken nowhere.

Pretty good, as a portuguese,I saw you forgot to mention events like Anglo-Portuguese alliance, being the very oldest alliance in the world still in place.
India was not completely under British rule, there were regions controlled by the portuguese such as Daman, Goa and Diu.
In the moments before WWI you forgot the British ultimatum to the anglo-portuguese alliance due to the need of the Brits to connect their colonies in Africa, thus not being posible with the portuguese unification of borders of Angola and Mozambique.
In WWI, Brits wanted the help of portuguese, evoking the alliance, resulting in the entrance of Portugal in WWI, that was very fruitful to Brits but not so to portuguese, which had a great loss of men and increased tension inside Portugal, resulting in the fall of monarchy and the institution of the republic.
Overall, your video is very very good, but I was expecting to see more facts regarding the anglo-portuguese alliance, which was and still is an alliance which bonds the two nations very deeply, and had a major role in the course of history of both nations.

@@markscouler2534 same in the West Country, though we're often forgotten. Our economy has largely been centres around industry, ports, fishing, and mines. All of that has practically gone now, and we've been left with practically F-all. Thing is the West Country is really nice so everyone assumes we're all rich but there's a lot of poverty here.

Only the puritans in Plymouth had come to America for religious reasons, the point of the colony in Jamestown was for monetary gain
Mr. Murica a colony is a colony... whatever the outcome the reason for it is the same.... to colonise.
Mr. Murica no shit it was to make money, like the guy said above they were colonising not making buddy’s
To be fair, the potatoes famine had a lot to do with oppression on religious grounds.
Anyone else get this recommended after the new assassin’s creed game?

It's Marvelous to learn about Britain Wich has been an empire for long time. I love their culture, language and spite of living so far, I hope to travel some day from Peru to London or other are in Britain. Thanks for share.
Today’s world was shaped by the British.
And in 2018 the British people said "naaaa, we don't wanna play anymore", and into the pages of irrelevance they shall disappear, and remain for the rest of humanity.
@@dbznappa what are you on about?
@Fadbamse Yeah I guess I am. I think the world needs to work together, and we vote to exit the EU. And it's made it so we now have no say on how the world should be run. Still noticing that Brexiters aren't saying "see how much better everything is?", and to be honest, I don't think they ever will.
dbznappa bruh, brexit hasn’t even happened because of the wankers in parliament, and also Britain won’t become irrelevant, because it’s in the British blood to not want to be irrelevant

The Irony of announcing Napoleon Bonaparte to one of the most famous Prussian marching songs at 14:31 had me in stitches!!
Interesting that the Welsh kingdoms back in the early middle ages are pretty much one for one with the counties now. Dyfed, Powys, Gwynedd all looked identical. England has some too, but they seem to be much smaller and interspersed with lots of other counties.
And let's not forget gwyllosgouchtdmiulchtdoqeulchtwulfouchkt
The counties are based on the principalities

Britain's ruler is tea, the queen as amazing as she is, is no where near as great as that delicious beverage. I'm also British so watching this is actually quite nice to see where our ancestors came from and what they have done. So thanks for this
How's it nice to see your ancestors were brutal rapists pillaging burning and enslaving hundreds of millions of people
@@davidmockler2160 I'd rather look at the brighter side of my ancestors actions
And I don't want to pick a fight but the chances of your ancestors being brutal rapists and murders are also high.
The queen's dead
Your ancestors were no more than pirates, looters, scheming racists. Don't be so proud over them. BTW, Queen is dead and a caricature of a king is on the throne, his wife unable to wear Kohinoor.
I love that Middlesbrough gets a mention, the town's impact is often overlooked 👍

4:27 fun fact, during the battle of hastings william of normandy's men started retreating because they thought he had died, william had to take off his helmet to show his men he was still alive
Well we don't know exactly why they retreated it was either planned or what you said we won't know for certain
@@ciaranmck4469 he also did a planned fake retreat to make the english think they gave up and chase williams men, then they turned around and surrounded harold godwinsons men
Pussies
lol some YT vids claim the retreat was a deliberate tactical maneuver
I want to briefly remind everyone that the great potato famine was not unavoidable. Ireland produced more than double the necessary food to feed its population but the English chose to export all the surviving crops instead of letting Irish families feed themselves. This was a Genocide. Táim le hÉirinn. 🇮🇪
Well done on giving Welsh, scottish and irish history a fair shout, too many just include English history or the history of the other nations when it affected england.
Everyone hates the english
Welp, I’m glad I live in Wales then. Cause now I can just blame everything on England.
VVGirl might aswell because everybody else does.
VVGirl But not your freezing cold winter rain, that I had to put up with when I went to Art School in South Wales in the Eighties.
Julia Naylor yeah our rain sucks, but our sunny days are boiling.
VVGirl When I was in Newport in the early 80s there were frequent thunder storms in the summer.
Julia Naylor like I said, our weather sucks. At least you didn’t have to walk up a hill and cross a bridge during a thunderstorm due to a nearby hurricane while coming home from school. This happened.
This is a great summary of a super complex history. Awesome job 🙏🏻😁
New South Wales colony started in 1788 not 1778, otherwise a very good video. Concise and all the important points covered well.
You missed out the Jacobite risings which are a very important key part of UK history

“Countries started to want their independence,” so Britain gave Hong Kong to China
Hahahaha OMG
They’ll end up a minority in their own country if they side with the West
Because Hong Kong belonged to China.
@@lu881 it’s a shame that the ccp has control over Hong Kong now
No Britain gave Hong Kong back to China because they signed a 99 year lease with China to control it, and that lease ended in 1997.
A fantastic overview video. Just the right pace and depth. Way better than others I've seen!
Warning, at about 14:30 anyone trying to fall asleep to some calm history content is going to be sorely disappointed
William Wallace was a legend, and there was also Fletcher who ran from battlefield after a devastating loss to tell the locals about the result before passing away from injuries acquired from the battle of flodden.
I mean we also ended the slave trade across most of the world - even blockading Brazil. The only modern slavers are Arabic and African and in ‘certain’ parts of Asia.
What?? That's like saying I stabbed someone to death but then I stopped stabbing so I should be applauded. Let go of your pride, Britain has a disgusting shameful past.
@Kerrie Cain Britain significantly more shamful than most countries especially when we barely acknowledge our crimes and most of the public see the empire as something to be proud about.
