Katie, I'm so sorry for your loss. I lost my son 11 years ago at 17 years old. I"ve had some of his favorite shirts stored away for so long but I finally got up the courage, I guess, to go through them and I'm going to make a wall hanging of them. I loved your t-shirt design so followed it and made my granddaughter a quilt for her graduation party yesterday. She loved it and a lot of the guests. I used her school colors of navy and gray and white. used plain navy on the back. it worked up fast and easy. I bought 2 yards of gray and 3 yards of navy, and used the navy for the binding and still had about 1/2 yard left or so. no gray left..some people had asked about the yardage so thought I'd share. I used pellon 101 for the interfacing and it worked really good. quarter inch seam for everything was used. I wanted to post a picture, but I don't see a way to add one..oh, and I used gray thread all the way through and nothing showed through.
I've got 3 of these to make and I've been really stressing because I was worried about ruining the shirts. Your video has given me the confidence to get started. You make it look easy! Thank you!

I am a beginner, so I need some extra guidance....you are sewing on the top of the black and pink borders...is this correct? You are not putting the right sides together to sew until you begin sewing the line of squares together after the four borders have been attached with top stitching. Please confirm I have this correct. thanks very much!
That was fascinating watching you work this piece out. It is not really my thing, but it is a very interesting piece. I love the way you have introduced some depth to the painting and the vibrancy. Your work is sometimes quite muted. This is different and fresh. ❤
Thank you for this video. What kind of material did you use for the borders? Did you press stabilizer on to them before sewing them on to the t-shirt squares?
I’m confused about the boarders at 7:30 mark. Do you fold the 2” boarder in half lengthwise and insert the edge of T-shirt in between that sandwich so it creates a 1” rim boarder in front and back? How do you do the corners are. They overlapped or mitered? Then how do you see the boarder on, or do you not sew those on but rather they are secured by sewing the blocks together? Lastly how do you see the blocks together into the rows of five? Do you butt the edges of the boarders together and zig zag to connect or do you do a 1/2” seam from the back of the T-shirt and then press seam open and the seams of the connections are on the back of the quilt which is then covered with a solid fabric backing hiding those seams? You did a great job but some of those details I just was not sure about
My daughter wants a quilt with her Rush t shirts. I don't think anyone makes a bed that big. But I will be using your great ideas on her two quilts. What a great video. Many thanks.
Great information for me as I am beginning my first t-shirt quilt. I love the 'framing' of each square. Do you happen to know how much material (yds) is required of the pink and black? And does the 12" squares, 5 x 6 like you did, fit a queen bed comfortably?

Great video, I’m a complete beginner and am trying to do with all my old hockey shirts. You mention using a top stitch to fill in the neck of shirts that need it. But I’m wondering what stitch you did to connect the borders to the shirt blocks, and what you then did to connect all the blocks together to finish it? Was it also a top stitch? Thanks!

Love the video. I've got all my blocks ready for sashing. The video says 2 inch strips. Is this actually that measurement or do you start with 2 1/2 inch to allow for seam allowance.
Thanks! Instead of purchasing fabric for backing, I'm cutting the back of the T-shirts the same size as the front, add the sashing and all I need to do now is make my sandwich and quilt.
I have a t-shirt quilt in progress, using this tutorial, of course! I have all shirts cut and stabilized and pressing fabric for the black shadow portion, then will prep and cut the other border fabric, which is planned to be black and gold stripes. Thank you for your video. I finally got started. The only problem is that some of my shirts were a tad smaller, so I ended up cutting them 12 x 12 instead of 12.5, hope that will still be OK??? I have more to make anyway so this will be my practice one! Thanks.
I enjoy your sewing and quilting videos. A few questins regarding the tee shirt quilt. I isuallysew my quilt pieces together at stitch length 1.8 or 2.0 would this be ok?. I use 50 weight thread,is that OK ? The stabalizer you used,is there a particular item number. I called the and I was told there are so many types-and to try to find out more information of which stabilizer. Then i can locate a store. Did you buy the 12” wide? by how long? Can i use top stich needle, thats my normal needle. Thank you
Some good tips here, but Laura says to determine the size of your largest design and make that your block size (with seam allowances) then opts to use her 12-1/2" square ruler to size her pieces, cutting off some of the designs in the process. Wish I had seen this about the neck opening when the design is too close to the neck BEFORE I cut all my shirts. Now I'm going to have one or two designs cut off because I don't have enough for the seam allowance.
I put a medium gray on 2 of the sides, then ran into you video showing you put black which I wish I did but now I don’t know what to put on the otherside either a light color or a dark color. Please help. FYI most of the T-shirts. I’ve done are black.
So just to make sure I'm grokking this. At 7:22, you've placed the "faces" of the t-shirt square and the 2-inch wide border together at the edges and sewn at 1/4 inch. You then folded the border over and "finger-pressed" it. So you've used up 1/2 inch of fabric doing that and have 1.5 inches left over, and it looks like that's right because the part of the black border not covering the edge of the t-shirt square is spanning 1.5 of the blocks on your mat. So I'm guessing you use the same method for the other three sides, and you have a bordered square. So then when you sew two bordered squares together at 1/4 inch again (connecting a pink border to a black border), you "lose" that 1/4 inch to the back and wind up with 1.25 inches between the two seams but have 1.5 inches showing when you add on the folded over section that is showing 1/4 inch. Am I seeing that right? I'm a little wordy. This demo has really helped me, but I'm at the point of attaching borders and putting it all together, and I don't want to screw up at this step. Thanks.
I loved the technique used in this tutorial, where the block borders are completed along the way & just necessitated two long borders on each side, to complete. I see no reason why not to incorporate this technique in square block quilts, other than t-shirt quilts. Am I correct in this assumption?

I'm sorry I do not have a pattern. My videos are just as I am sewing, for you to follow along. The amount you will need will depend on the size of the shirts. What you will need to do is figure out what your finished size is going to be and then do the math. You will be able to change the borders to get the size that you want or change the size of the blocks. I find the best way is to make a sketch of what you have and work from there. I hope this helps

This will be my next adventure, sewing a Michael Dunahee memory quilt for my sisters 81 birthday ( his grandmother) I haven,t measuresed anything to exact yet, but I think to get everything in the block will probably be somewhere around 16". These shirts have been made every year now for over 25 years, this will be a challenge for me, but I know my sister will love it, and give her comfort. So should the border fabric be washed as well? What kind of fabric should I use for the boarder strips? Also, how much of that fabric should I buy for an 8 by 5 shirt quilt? (the shirts would be 12.5" x 12.5") Could you also tell me what type of fabric I should use on the back and how to attach it to the rest of the quilt? Nicely done! Perfect pacing; not too fast and no babbling off on tangents.. once straight thru w/o pausing to repeat, repeat, repeat like so many do. Question: For the framing strips - do you sew/baste seams or fold in half lengthwise.. and do you sew strips 1st then sew onto squares or pin the frame strips and sew directly to squares, hemming as you go?

sorry I missed your question! I would add just a cotton backing with no batting. It is already thick enough

Did you put a backing on the quilt after you were done with the borders
Can you tell me why after pinning I still get bubbles when attaching the border to the t-shirt? It leaves small wrinkle in the seam.

Hi. Could I use yellow strips instead of black?
This will be my next adventure, sewing a Michael Dunahee memory quilt for my sisters 81 birthday ( his grandmother) I haven,t measuresed anything to exact yet, but I think to get everything in the block will probably be somewhere around 16". These shirts have been made every year now for over 25 years, this will be a challenge for me, but I know my sister will love it, and give her comfort. So should the border fabric be washed as well? Thanks for your videos, it will make this a gift of love!

I dont think you have to. But it will take much longer by hand.

Great Video. My sister asked me to make a t shirt quilt of her son's HS athletic t shirts and jerseys which i have never done before. So thank you much for your expertise. Can you be more specific with the particular of the stabilizer? I clicked on the link you offered, and could find a stabilizer that is noted specifically for t shirt quilts.

What kind of fabric should I use for the boarder strips? Also, how much of that fabric should I buy for an 8 by 5 shirt quilt? (the shirts would be 12.5" x 12.5") Could you also tell me what type of fabric I should use on the back and how to attach it to the rest of the quilt? Your video has been inspired me to start my own quilt!

@@SewVeryEasy This is in regards to when you're adding the black and pink borders? Do you make several 1/4" marks along the edge and pin the borders using those as a guide then sew? Is that the easiest way to do it, or is there a trick I haven't considered?

I'm new to this, so once you sew them together, do you use the same folding over method as when you put the border on? I'm not sure how to connect them..

Nicely done! Perfect pacing; not too fast and no babbling off on tangents.. once straight thru w/o pausing to repeat, repeat, repeat like so many do. Question: For the framing strips - do you sew/baste seams or fold in half lengthwise.. and do you sew strips 1st then sew onto squares or pin the frame strips and sew directly to squares, hemming as you go?

I would like to make a t-shirt quilt without the shadow box effect (I’m a beginner). Can you tell me what size I need to cut the material that surrounds the t-shirts? Thx!
When you pieced the shirt squares, did you sew with 1/4 inch seam allowance?
When you talk about the shadow box strips around the T-shirt block, 2”x12.5”, the 2” should it not be 2.5”?
