    That's where I grew up, just over the hill from Bondi. You have to swim even if it feels cold, once you are in the water your body acclimatises and changes your day for the better. I used to swim from Icebergs to the rocks on the other side every morning, best way to make to yourself feel alive... I miss those days.

    Please run back to Coles, grab the double coat Tim Tam's, those are the ones in the blue packet. Bite each end off one biscuit and use it like a straw to sip some coffee. Or even milk if your a dairy boy like myself!

    One thing that will blow your mind is a Tim Tam Slam. You willl be need a packet of Tim Tam's that have been in the fridge and an ice cold glass of milk. Take a Tim Tam and bite off a small part of two, diagonally opposite corners. Then place one corner in the glass of milk and suck the milk through the Tim Tam like using a straw. Then eat the Tim Tam. Enjoy!!! 🙂🤙

    As a very general rule there's an ocean temperature lag, around Sydney that tends to be about two to three months, so some of the warmer (water) months are after summer, towards Easter.

    Australia is in a confluence of three weather events that by themselves are somewhat unusual, rare to fall together. That has caused very much colder and wetter weather than normal, spring being more like extended winter, so the sea hasn’t had a chance to warm up. In September it’s coldest at around 19C and gets to about 23C in February. It should have been around 22C when you were there, but it was barely 19. That small range actually makes a big difference in how cold or warm it feels.

    • @Bellas1717
      @Bellas1717 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@coopy5 I have a double degree in Science, so if the three events were 'climate change', I would have named it. These are three weather events, each of which has have been noted as occurring cyclically from the time record-keeping began. That they are occurring together in such extremes, that is due to anthropogenic climate change. We need to be careful because cynics and deniers take every opportunity to say we don't know what we're talking about. Cheers.

      If you’re still in Sydney the Northern Beaches are fabulous and the coastal walk links Bondi to Palm Beach (northernmost Sydney beach). That walk would take 3 days but there’s many beautiful spots you can pick and choose to walk along the way. I’d definitely recommend the Mosman / Balmoral harbour walks, Manly/Freshwater/Curl Curl and Palm Beach parts just for starters. So much beautiful nature around Sydney 🏖 you can get ferries from Circular Quay straight past the Opera House to Mosman and Manly.

Great surf at some beaches depending on the wind. Believe me the Surf does get significant bigger. Bondi is an enigma. It is a nice beach and a pleasant trip by bus or train but gets very crowded on a hot day. & buses are packed on those days. The thing about beaches everyone has different reasons for liking or disliking them.

    Love your reaction to the water temperature and the surfers. I was the same when I visited England in '98 - had a 5-day stay in Cornwall ... Chapel Port Beach to be exact. My Mum (British-born and raised) and I spent 5 weeks in England and had this little "pause" in Cornwall with one of her brothers. They walked in the water and seemed okay about it, but I found a small jetty, walked to the end, put my hand half-way into the water, 10 seconds later took it out and it was already stating to turn blue (no joke). So our "cold" water here in Australia is nuffin like the British ice-cold water. To boot, there were a few surfers out there in the water too - in short wet-suits. Talk about mad dogs and Englishmen ... 🤣

      It does. Lots of factors, tidal, time of day etc. Bondi and the surrounding beaches catch the cooler current. If you’re in the right spot you can swim a few metres and find yourself in a much warmer spot comparatively. If you head to Queensland in summer the water is like a lukewarm bath !! Personally I prefer the cooler (not too cold !!) spots because it’s really refreshing and cools down your core temperature on those hotter days.

  • @bensimpson7840
    @bensimpson7840 ปีที่แล้ว

    The water temp is also affected by the wind direction and how it interacts with the shore (Coriolis effect). North East (NE or Nor-easter) winds push the warm surface water offshore and the cold sub surface water replace it. I'm couple of hours up the coast from Sydney and after a few days of NE have had days where the air temp is 40 degrees and the water is 14 degrees. The warm current is pushed slightly offshore around Coffs Harbour about 1/2 way between Sydney and Brisbane this allows the cooler water to sit near the coast.

      It's actually not that cold (current water temp is 20ºC) and getting warmer each day. But cold currents can come up the coast from down south, and alternatively, warm currents can come down the coast from up north making a trip tot he beach a bit of a hit and miss affair. The best thing to do is the swim each day and acclimatise to the water, then the experience is a much better one everyday! This is why you see people in the water every day on news and reviews of the city. Difficult when you are travelling, I know!

    You people crack me up with your first impressions of here, (cute). I love your enthusiasm and excitement. The water temperature obviously varies a lot in this country. In Qld, the water is not so cold for example. And yes you CAN swim in the ocean above the tropic of Capricorn (Rockhampton), in summer. Just swim between the flags and read the surf life saving signs on the beach. Some beaches further north, like the Daintree have crocs, so try to consult a few local people first. Its mainly about local knowledge.

      I lived in north Qld for 4 years. You can swim in summer, but only inside stinger nets (unless you like jelly fish and have a death wish 😅) Also, the water is tepid in summer, with no waves, and you might as well be swimming in pea soup.

    Not that I've been swimming everywhere, but it seems the Australian waters are freezing all year 'round. Probably to do with cold currents from the antarctic waters. But you go too far south, you're dealing with white pointer sharks... too far north in the warmer top-end and you have crocodiles. But the best swim I ever had was Little Salmon Bay on Rottnest Island. It was so peaceful & refreshing. Water as clear as glass.

    Bondi is overrated, I would suggest visitors to take a ferry from circular quay to Manly and take a nice walk from Manly Warf through The Corso to Manly Beach and walk along the beach. Plenty of places to eat, drink, shop, enjoy the view and the fresh open air. I find it much more enjoyable than Bondi, maybe you will too. Then back again the same way to circular quay by ferry and enjoy the city views from the water as the sun sets, so beautiful!. Sydney has many beautiful beaches, there are walkways through nature that you can take from one beach to another, you may also want to do that as well.

    In the 1990s there was a proposal to extend the railway to Bondi Beach with a private company charging an extra fare but NIMBYs (not in my back yard) mainly made up of elites like actors and various artists campaigned to stop it, so the ludicrous situation of having to get on a crowded slow bus for the last couple of km, fighting through appalling congestion still exists. Sydney is held back a lot by special interests. Bondi used to have a tramway to the beach that was much better before they closed the system in 1960. That's another story.
    Cronulla beach in the very south of Sydney remains the only beach in Sydney metropolitan area accessible by train.

    7:17 Westfield....
    ... like Speedo, has Sydney origins.
    The founder, Frank Lowy opened his very first shopping centre in the suburb of Blacktown in Western Sydney. in 1959.
    The name literally comes from the location: Westfield - comes from the fact it was built on a "field" in the "west" of Sydney.
    It was an Australian only institution but did expand quickly.
    At one point in its history, Westfield owned more retail space in the USA than any other company. The most interesting property it owned in my opinion was purchasing the rights to retail to the World Trade Center in New York prior to 911. The space was obviously destroyed in the twin tower attacks, but eventually went on to be an architectural masterpiece well known in New York today. Westfield World Trade Center (also known as the Oculus), is the largest shopping complex in Manhattan.
    The large Westfield development in London's White City was actually just immediately after Bondi Junction and took a lot of design elements from the success of Bondi. Westfield in London of course needed to be massive and impressive becoming the largest shopping centre in the UK at time of opening.
    In 2018 massive French investment led to the creation of the Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield group, which is currently the largest real estate company in Europe.
    To think that such a large company came from such humble beginnings from a more socio-economically challenged area of Sydney's west.

    When you come out of Bondi Junction "Tube" station (our rail isn't a tube as the trains are big double-deckers) you then have to catch a bus to Bondi Beach because the locals didn't want the rail extended to the beach to bring all the riff-raff from less watery parts of the City! But to be fair, even as a biased Sydneysider, the bus trip is worth it as the beach is spectacular, and you can do a coastal walk to even prettier beaches. like Bronte, Coogee, Tamarama (danderous surf) and Clovelly. This is the hell Britain sent my ancestor to, and you two show our wonderful city to perfection. The water is 21 degrees at Bondi in summer. If you want warm go up to Queensland. Westfield is an Australian company. NSW Tourism should be paying you!

    The Penguin / TimTam comparison is spot on. I feel the Penguin is more lean and long, and leans more on being more biscuit and less chocolate. A lot harder.
    TimTam is less biscuit, a tad fatter and relies more on the cream filling and more chocolate on the outside.
    It's best trying them side by side as I have done on many occasions. Penguin is significantly harder but British chocolate is more creamy imho.
    Both Arnotts in Australia (creator of TimTam) and McVities (creator of Penguin) are very well known companies in their respective homes and do great biscuits other than these hallmarks.
    TimTam interesting was created after its maker had a UK trip eating Penguin, and wanted to use it as inspiration to make a better version. Of course this comes down to the consumer as both are also different enough to appeal to different people. Very similar to Marmite and Vegemite, where Vegemite was borne out of a desire to create something similar to the British Marmite.
    It was at one point renamed to Parwill to try to beat its competitor with the slogan, "If Ma might, Pa will" - but this failed badly and the product was changed back to Vegemite.
    In another UK link, back when the UK and Australia were strengthening trade ties, Boris Johnson said: "I want a world in which we send you Marmite, you send us Vegemite,. We send you Penguins and you send us, with reduced tariffs, these wonderful Arnott’s Tim Tams," (he held up the biggest family pack of TimTams while saying this).
