    I discuss gloves a little in this video. I don't typically use gloves but as you can see in the video there is occasionally a need for them regardless how much I like bare handed beekeeping. I do recommend that new beekeepers use bee gloves until they get totally comfortable and used to handling the bees. The gloves I prefer would be a short vented cuff style goat skin leather glove. The goat skin gloves are better for feel but the cow leather gloves are of course a little more durable. Gloves aren't going to be a single investment like a suit or smoker since they do wear out but they can last many years with proper care. Nitrile gloves can also be a good option for some beekeepers since they really help you to feel what you are doing which is pretty important. They are not as sting proof as the leather gloves though and they have no cuff so you still have to cover your wrists somehow. I don't care for them myself but a lot of people swear by them. Whatever your choice if you go with nitrile I'd stay away from black. Below are some Amazon affiliate links to the glove styles I would prefer.
    Humble Bee has glove sizes from XX-Small to XX-Large in goat leather and up to XXX-Large in cow leather.
    Goat skin leather beekeeping gloves with size selection amzn.to/1sEqee2
    Cow hide leather beekeeping gloves with size selection amzn.to/24OrOGi

    Splitting hives is something that can be done several different ways. This day in the apiary we split five hives. It was early in the season, February 28th 2016, so there were no queens available for sale at this point. All these hives made their own queens and turned out nice healthy colonies. The hot hive we split even turned out a more docile colony due in part to breeding. The drones from other more docile colonies bring in their more calm genetics when they mate with the new queen. Multiple drones will mate with a queen during her mating flights.
    This apiary is at "Toadstead Project", a TH-cam channel dedicated to homesteading and small scale farming. The second guest was Les from "GrayV 111" on TH-cam. Both of these channels have some beekeeping on them along with other tips for prepping and country living.
    This was a pretty fun visit that was made extra goofy because Toad had been up all night and I had only gotten two hours sleep prior to driving up there and diving into this project so we were both a little nutty.
    Big thanks to the Toadstead Project for an enjoyable time. Check out his channel. / @toadstead1
    Also thanks to Les from the GrayV 111 channel for coming out and participating. Always a fun guy to hang around with. / grayv111

    I liked the motorcycle glove part because I could relate something only a dirt bike person could relate to now days, unless it's a little ahead of your time frame, wouldn't be by much though I wouldn't think. When I was in JR Highschool, I saved up my lawn mowing money and managed to buy a Hodaka 100 for $80 bucks, had a carburetor issue no one could fix. Including me or my dad, that was about 1978 or 9. Wish it would have been the 125 Super Rat but, that thing still screamed! You just couldn't control the fuel feed, bad casting I think, that was back when people were considered top of the line on things like that. Those days were great!

      It's funny the raggedy things we used to ride and love back then. I had about a 79 Suzuki RM125 that I could only crank by push starting. I would have to push it up a hill to roll back down and crank it. If I killed it I'd have to find a little hill to get it going again. I traded some car parts for that bike. I think I was fourteen at the time.

    hi 628DirtRooster. your videos really help me as a new beekeeper. Can I ask how much of those mason jars the hives use? I'm still feeding my new hives (see my channel) about 1/2 of one of those a day but they suck it all up by midday. Is one jar like that a day OK?
    Thanks for all your help and tuition from sunny south of France.

    • @628DirtRooster
      @628DirtRooster  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      A strong colony can take almost a quart a day for a while. They'll ignore the feeder if there is good stuff in bloom. Make sure they are drinking it and you're not losing it to drips or leaks. Enjoy paradise. :)

      @Agathescom 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

It don't get as hot up here in Northwestern Pa,as it does down your way,but we had 80 degree weather and my ultra breeze suit worked great,any little breeze felt like air conditioning,we're as my one size fits most bee suit I would of sweating my butt off.

    Even better: wearing the red headlamp inside the veil to collect a swarm trap at night. Then sweating a lot and having the lamp slide off my forehead and collect in the veil at my chin ("Where the #*(@# am I??? Where did the truck go?"). Trying to squeeze the off button through the veil screen (didn't work). And THEN having one sting me on the finger through the goatskin gloves. Why do I do this again?

    • @628DirtRooster

  • @FloridaMustangMike
    @FloridaMustangMike 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm jealous. Your bees have queens. My very first hive removal from a water meter resulted in a queenless hive. 2000 bees that won't go into the hive box.....shake em in they buzz right back out. I think they are depressed.

  • @einname9986
    @einname9986 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm not a beekeeper (sadly it is really difficult in cities :( ) but watching videos about that topic for a while.
    Recently Cody from Cody's Lab said that when the bees are getting smoke they will hide the queen which will make it harder to find it.

    • @628DirtRooster
      @628DirtRooster  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sometimes yes. You might be in a better spot than you think. Look into urban beekeeping.

    • @einname9986
      @einname9986 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +628DirtRooster I know that it is said that bees in cities live better lives than those at the countryside because there are less pesticides, but our roof is so hot, the wax will melt immediately in summer.
      Especially Vienna, we have a lot of parks and so on here.
      And the same problem as it is with every pet: who cares about them when being on holiday for a few weeks?

    • @628DirtRooster

      They really need attendants for more than a half day or so out of the hive. I think you're going to have three dead bees when you get home.
      You can add strange bees to a queen but for the best result open brood should be added at the same time.

    I've noticed where I park at work there's a small hedge with dark green leaves. I see maybe about 5 or 6 bees flying around the leaves and crawling around on them as if they were flowers. This is usually in the morning. Any reason why they'd be so interested in a flowerless bush? I don't see any moisture on it.

    At 14:39, when he said the bees came begging for more, well they really do that. I don't have a hive, but I have a feeding station where I put sugar/honey water out, and when they run dry, the bees come looking for me, and if they find me, they get up to my face and do a little back and forth dance. Then they head back to the feeder and back to me. Just like tiny little dogs begging for treats.

    • @628DirtRooster
      @628DirtRooster  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Isn't it funny how they do that? I picked up an open feeder the other day and a whole cloud followed me across the yard for a refill.

    • @SASunDog
      @SASunDog 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh you gotta video that! How adorable! I started this bee feeder a couple weeks ago, and the experience is blowing my mind. Today, I went out on the porch, and I knew the feeder ran dry because the bees were waiting at the door. And a couple bees, they came up to my face, like before, but this time they FANNED A SMELL AT ME. It was a strong smell of wax, and, I dunno, bees? Kind of a spicy powdery dusty smell. Is that the hive smell? I never smelled them before. But they wafted that smell at me, and flew slowly back to the feeder, like they thought I had lost the way, and they were gonna guide me back to it. The bees that were feeding and paying me no mind, I couldn't smell that smell on them. So I guess they can shout smells?

      now id like you to do a experiment
      tack different bee kinds and let them go in the same area and see what honey is the best. id like to know what bees make what honeys and how they taste how sweet they are and how thick each one is.

    WHEN YOU SAY A MEAN HIVE ARE YOU Talking ABOUT A Africanized hive. also what would happen if you swapped the african queen with a euro queen. ie kill the african queen and dropped a more dosile euro queen. would they except her or kill her

    • @628DirtRooster
      @628DirtRooster  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Some hives are just mean without being Africanized. If you put in a Euro queen eventually all her offspring would replace all the Africanized offspring. I hear it's really hard to requeen and Africanized colony that way though.

      +628DirtRooster i miss your up loads. i have learned a lot from you and the fat bee man. i'm considering adding a few colony's to my vineyards in here in napa california. the guy that was bee keeping lost 95% of his colony's from a massive die out no clue what killed them all . i run a 100% all organic farm . and the bees are my best friend with out them i loose crops. this year i had to pay 10,000 dollars to have a team come out and pollinate my crop with q-tips basically . thats the first & last time i ever do that . 5 years ago bee's were plentiful. they were every ware even rescued a few out of my pool but since then they are even more rare than the condor.

    • @628DirtRooster
      @628DirtRooster  8 ปีที่แล้ว
