    I have a cowboy style hat with veil I like ! The wide brim really holds the veil out away from my face and you know why that is important! LOL

    I totally agree about the bread knife, it is great for working in the comb. I have TBH's so it's even more handy than my hive tool. I like Warren's get-up. My "hood" is a homemade job I did myself, I just took window screen (plastic kind) and hot glued it around the bottom of the brim of my hat with a draw string bottom with loops to run laces through to keep it in place and tight down the front and back. lol Works great! I may do a jacket like that too with the screen I bet it is a lot cooler. Those surgical gloves (puncture resistant) are great for this kind of work, thin so you can work easier and harder for the bees to sting through.

    I really really wanna do this.. but I cant. I have a pretty bad phobia. I mean jump out of moving cars phobia. I will say A) its not like the movies B) Even if you think the car is going slow.. its not. C) That road hurts a lot more than that bee ever could. So I am going to let my husband (who has wanted to for years) get some hives going. I may not be able to be hands on... but there is a lot I can help with. I have to say tho, honey bees are a lot easier to deal with for me because they do their own thing.. not like wasps and yellow jackets (who are just plain mean) Maybe some day I can handle it. You have absolutely no idea how much you have helped me. Usually when I watch vids like this I turn into a basket case as every buzzing thing is a bee and I freak out. I have done a lot of damage to myself just in a blind panic. We are pretty sure I may be allergic to yellow jackets.. but I have been stung by a honey bee (I stepped on it) and had no reaction.. just hurt till the stinger was out (In my pinky toe/on the inside/between the toes/in that little bit of webbing ...I swear it went to the bone) Because of your sugar water/truck mishap... I actually went out there and made a feeder for the wild bees (very northern Maine so its getting close to the end for them) , and watch them... and don't freak out as bad. Thank you... really you have no idea how much your vids have helped me. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Sorry for the novel.

    Glad to see Southern Hives exploding, man those hives had quite a bit of honey. But the Northern hives are catching up finally because our Dandelions are out and the Apple trees and Berry bushes aren't far behind them. I got a new package and it is booming, they got capped brood, a good laying queen and two frames just chock full of nectar, now I'm just waiting on some nucs and the time to do a cutout.
    Have a good weekend Rooster, the weatherman says its gonna be nice all across the board, and I'm guessing the bees are gonna be flying today.

    I have told everyone about how much i enjoy your channel. I have learned so much from watching. If I was not disabled because of my back or even after about 15 years ago I would love to try bee keeping. At its heaviest time how often do you have to take the honey out? Also I saw on the news where a guy that worked for a bee company had stolen over $800k in bees over a period of time. They said the bee co. said a single hive could make a million dollars in a year. Even charging for pollination etc. that seemed impossible. What do you think? Thanks... Linda from Va. Oh and please tell your lovely wife her catching her pet chickens so reminded me of me and my family. We only had a few but I was once given a beautiful young rooster that took up with my Grandson when he was 5. David even made Richard his name of the rooster a party hat and had me take pictures of him holding Richard standing behind the table at his fifth birthday party. Sadly we had let the chickens out to roam one evening while we went to the store and a stray dog killed and ripped them all up. I would never have brought the child home if I had known or saw it. I live in the woods back off the road and they were killed near and around the house. I also thought your ducks were adorable but does the bossy one ever let the other in the pool lol.

    • @628DirtRooster
      @628DirtRooster  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sure wish you could get into the hobby.
      The news guy had his numbers way off. For a commercial beekeeper a single hive might make $1,000 to $1,500 per year at the most in contracts and honey production but there is a lot of equipment and man power involved in doing that. Overhead that comes out of that profit is big money. You can take honey once or twice a year depending on how you're running. Also $800K in bees is about ten tractor trailer loads of live bee boxes depending on what you figure per box. I think someone exaggerated for their news channel.
      We gave the ducks away to a neighbor with a pond. They were as nasty as pigs. :)

    • @trytohelpthem1512
      @trytohelpthem1512 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you so much for clarifying that so i googled it. I never found any article stating an employee stole the bees but a man in Fresno I think it was in California was charged with over $800k in theft of bees and equipment that he had stolen with most of the bees belonging to a contractor in Montana I think. Ive never been to sleep because my back is really bad tonight and I wanted to post this if I am lucky enough to finally fall asleep. Thats all I will ever mention about my back again I promise and only did so to explain my lack of clarity. I also want to say I am very blessed because I am not wheel chair bound yet. It said there were a huge number of almond tree orchards that desparatly needed strong healthy bees. Another owner that said she had lost $200k in this theft was not putting the returned bees in with her others right away because she was afraid they might now have mites. The theft was done by taking the hives from the orchard and then grinding away the ID on the boxes and painting them. Another bee keeper heard how a new company wanted to do his business at Starbucks and knew the companies did not do that and acted as a farmer and got the thieves address to talk about hiring him. When he got there he saw the boxes being ground down and painted stepped aside and called police. There were two articles that stated the $800k plus amount in theft and one said only $86k. They were. constant in valuing the bees and hives much higher than yours perhaps because of the amount of almonds needing bees and it being contracts. You have a beautiful family and its so nice to see you with your Dad and brother and friends. I hope your Dad is doing better. You are such a comedian yet so gentle in handling and speaking about your bees. I had to buy my daughter a grown duck when she was about 4. He was in a cage behind the feed store and she heard him loudly quacking and had to see him. I think he was intended for the holidays dinner. Anyway she named him Donald and yes his pool was cleaned and changed twice daily but was always dirty. We had to spend the night at my Moms one day and night because of my husband being called in to work and something got in the chicken yard and hen house and killed my 50 laying hens and the duck. They were not torn in pieces like the few i ahad here I told you about. We even had them in 6ft. wire. I had made pets and almost pets out of those also. There were many that would fly up onto our lap after they had pecked for the evening. I sold their eggs to the local country store. I never made any extra money but it did pay for the feed. As they had grown older they did not lay as often but the store was really happy with the larger double yolk eggs they gave. I didn't have any more chickens till my grandson was big enough to want some years later. Now I only have my 2 cats and a dumped beagle bless his poor little heart. Although I keep dry food out free choice for him I still cannot get near him. Ive arranged to get a large trap next week so I can get him and get his rabies shot him neutered like all my pets have been and his Advantage II for fleas. This was way more than i should have post and i promise to never do it again.lol. After the poor dog has all that done he will probably leave here if he gets free lol. I want to make a house pet or at least an indoor outdoor dog of him. He always looks so sad.

    I'm new to your channel and love your videos. Would you tell, show us the difference between worker, drone and other brod types. Thanks.

    • @helenscott8202
      @helenscott8202 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jay, you can google them, but here goes. Drones are males, are used only for reproduction. Queens are used for reproduction, only mate on their mating flight, spend the rest of their lives laying eggs. Workers are females, nonmated, forage, care for the young (eggs, larva, pupa), make honey, defend the nest. In short, the workers do everything but lay other workers. They can, on occasion, lay, but their offspring are drones only. I hope all of this is correct. Google is better.

    Your dad is a good BK....I hate rubber bands, I got a way from them, by using a guide wedge, in the groove of the top frame,. glue and nail them in there....You can make a bunch of them from a 2x4 on the table saw about 1/8" thick, and 1" or 1 1/2" tall, 17" long. Now i just pinch the comb on the wedge guide if i need to Rubber bands are enough thing but a ticking time bomb.. It made me loose a few queens Thanks for sharing

    I hear down south the Privet is sweeter. I've got privet up north here and at times it seems it adds a bitter taste to the honey. You hear anything like that? Unless its from that milkweed, which they seem to love too. Last summer I pulled honey that had a bitter aftertaste (rubber band like). I put it in jars and let it sit for 6 months and the bitterness was gone. Boy was that some good tasting honey. Very unique!

    How do you tell drone brood from worker brood.. is it just there is multiple eggs in drone brood? I know I seen you cull a queen becasue she was laying multiple eggs, how do you tell the difference?

    • @julieenslow5915
      @julieenslow5915 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Jennifer Mills - I know this one! the cells are larger for a drone, and a little bit longer. The cell size therefore determines what the bees will feed up in that cell. And you only need one egg per cell for Queen, Workers and Drone alike. I don't know what happens when there are two eggs, but the cell only has room for one. So one or both would die.

      DoriGardener Both. They will have to clean up a little because that kind of makes a mess but they don't seem to mind too much. They will eat what honey they want and deposit the rest in undamaged comb. Then they'll start building the cells back out to where they like them.

    Looks like you're using plasti-cell foundation. I'm trying it in my supers this year but the bees seem reluctant to use it. I've never used it before.

    • @628DirtRooster
      @628DirtRooster  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wade Johnson We are using plastic and do have problems getting them to work it some times. I think Mann Lake sells the best ones. The cells on theirs are deeper and the bees have less work to do.

      628DirtRooster I have to agree that Mann Lake sells the best ones. Good wax coating and you can also buy them without wax and do your own wax coating.

      Pop's Shack I had some bee's. Last time I messed with them I got stung 22 times by the time I got inside :)

    • @PopsShack
      @PopsShack 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yep, been there done that. My first experience of working with bees was moving a couple of hives. At night. Over rocky ground. About 300 yards. With no gloves.
      I copped about a dozen stings that night. On each hand.

    Why put the water in and what is the blue stuff?

    • @628DirtRooster
      @628DirtRooster  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The blue is A/C filter material that gives the bees something to climb on so they don't drown.

    • @628DirtRooster
      @628DirtRooster  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The water is feed. Sugar water

    • @628DirtRooster
      @628DirtRooster  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      CopperKnutz It was supposed to keep the bees from drowning in the feeders which it does pretty well. The problem is that the beetles love it too. We are abandoning the use of those. It is A/C filter material.

      Thanks, what got me interested in bee keeping is, A hive died off at a friends house, so I helped him take it down and spin the honey out,"it was the best I ever tasted", I was hooked immediately! I like comb honey, eat it like candy, chew it like bubble gum. I know I was eating everything in the frames and didn't get sick, so I'm glad to know I can eat pretty much all of what I am claiming from the bees.
