Hello from CANADA, Poutine is our national meal here in Quebec. It's potatoes with cheese curds and gravy. It can be supplemented with meat as you saw.
Those poutine rations are rare so you got lucky!! Glad you enjoyed the candy too ;)

As someone who worked closely with military nutritionists, the reason rations in many first world countries have candy or sweets is because sugar is vital for proper functioning of muscle cells and brain cells. When you’re exercising a lot or constantly moving you exhaust those sugars fast. Therefore those sweets are both to add morale and replenish sugar your body needs. That’s why it’s common to find sugary and sweet items in US and Canadian rations. Intentionally, they aren’t to be eaten in one sitting, but snacked on throughout the day.

The Sheperd’s pie backstory is very dark
First of all its name in french is Pâté Chinois which roughly translate to Chinese dough
Its because during the building of the canadian pacifique railroad the worker’s were mainly chinese and they invented the Chinese dough and it was the only thing they could eat
Many of them died from explosives because they were the only ones to volunteer for these dangerous task

Those orange, yellow and brown "m&ms" are actually peanut butter candy called Reese's Pieces and they are glorious.. Unless you're allergic to peanut butter. Also try a real poutine, beef gravy, cheese curds, and french fries. One thing I love to do actually is make pierogi poutine. Fry some bacon, take that out of the pan and add pieorgis to the bacon fat, fry them till golden brown. Put them in a baking dish, drizzle what's left of the oil from the pan into the gravy. Add the gravy, the bacon bits, the cheese. Bake it until the top is brown and bubbling. Doesn't take very long if you broil them. Take out, dish it up, add a fat dollop of sour cream and chopped green onion, hot peppers(not the jarred banana ones but ghost/jalapeno/habanero. douse with ghost pepper sauce and enjoy. Sometimes I will add caramelized onions to the gravy. Not your traditional poutine but a game changer to say the least.

You usually don't find meat in a proper Poutine. It's basically French Fries with Gravy and Cheese Curds. It's not a meal you can usually take with you because the gravy need to be really hot to melt the cheese and you need to eat it before the content turn too soggy.

They are not FAKE M&M's...they are Smarties. Only available in Canada, and some say they are better than M&M's.
What amazed me was that you seem to have failed to read the instructions and ingredients.
That jerky (dried meat) was meant to be chewed...not placed in a bun.
The reason for the almost excessive calories in the food packs is the need for energy in cold climates.
All in all, a very poor description of a daily meal pack that even most non military Canadians would know the purpose and description. Next time try reading the instructions.

I can’t tell is he is being serious or not? Looking at a package that’s says what it is on it and then calling it a different thing, NOT putting the peanut butter and jam on the item that most resembles bread, the spork thing, I just don’t know

It's not Pita bread, it's tortillas. Also not fake M&Ms, it's Reese's pieces.

Those are bolete mushrooms you can tell from the Spongey bottom it might be a inky cap of some sort. Pretty much all boletes are edible, do they all taste good that’s a different story.

Sugar keeps you going for a bloody long time and in the military you are using alot of energy so it makes sense to have sweets in the rations chocolate also takes a long time to go off
