One of the things I like about Peter's drumming is that, despite being advanced and subtly complex, he never dominates the music and lets the talents of others in the band shine through. That is one element of his brilliance.
I've often thought that this (lack of domination of the music) may, in part, be due to his compositional skills. He has written some wonderful pieces of music without needing the drums to be up front and centre. Take for example "Not a word" or "For all the tea in China". I love these pieces of music, but I wouldn't be able to tell you whether there were any drums on those recordings.
Yes, he doesn't overdo it like some other drummers with massive egos. Peter never seems to forget that beyond the basic premise of adding fills and rolls to make his music more interesting, he isn't there to show off - that subtlety allows everyone else in the band to shine with him. Who wouldn't want to work with a drummer like Peter?
Peter's playing seems to getting better with age like fine wine. Great playing! Also, check out Peter's iBook "No Beethoven" .... I really enjoyed the read and all of the inside stories about his playing through out his entire career! Awesome!,
Boy he played this really welI, I doubt any other drummer could have played this any better! and all on a 4 piece bop kit & a few cymbals who needs more excellent Peter.
It looks like he plays in slow motions…we know it ain’t it skill and love of his freaking instrument look at his face it says it all funky smooth he’s smelling it.. not to many drummer can that accents na I see facts
Effortless. Ever watch a cover band try to play a Weather Report tune? It takes an orchestra. When you watch this video you begin to understand how four or give guys could do what WR did. Absolute command.

Like when you say "telatively"..... 🤣😅😅😅

It's very rare to see a matured creativity like Peter Erskine showcased here.
Peter Erskine The Yoda of drumming.
"Do or do not there is no try".
...I love how his "fills" are really just extensions of his timekeeping, just moved around the kit at various times.... Just superb!!
